Learn Dutch: Daag jij jezelf uit, of heb je een opdrachtgever nodig? - Do you challenge yourself, or do you need a client?

We use the emphatic reflexive pronoun jezelf (yourself) rather than the basic reflexive je when we want to add strong emphasis, usually to highlight a contrast. Here, the contrast is very clear: do you challenge yourself, or do you rely on someone else (a client) to do it?

Why does the sentence use jij in the first half, but je in the second half?

jij is the stressed subject pronoun, and je is the unstressed version. The first clause strongly emphasizes the subject ("Do YOU challenge yourself?"). In the second clause, the focus shifts to the object being needed (the opdrachtgever), so the unstressed je is used because the subject is no longer the main focus.

Where does the word uit come from before the comma?

It is the prefix of the separable verb uitdagen (to challenge). Because this is a yes/no question, the conjugated verb (daag) moves to the very front of the sentence, and its separable prefix (uit) gets pushed to the end of that specific clause.

How does the word opdrachtgever break down?

It translates to client or commissioner. It is a compound word made of opdracht (assignment or task) and gever (giver). Literally, it is the "assignment-giver"—the person who gives you a task and pays you to do it.
