Questions & Answers about Twee jaar geleden vond ik onze stamboom in het archief.
Why does it say Twee jaar instead of Twee jaren?
In Dutch, certain units of time and measurement stay in the singular form when they follow a number greater than one. Common examples are jaar (year), uur (hour), and keer (time/occurrence). Therefore, we say twee jaar instead of twee jaren.
Does geleden always come after the time phrase?
Yes. The word geleden means "ago" and it always comes immediately after the duration of time you are talking about (twee jaar geleden). It works exactly like "ago" does in English.
Why is the verb vond placed before the subject ik?
This is because of the verb-second (V2) rule. Since the sentence starts with the time phrase Twee jaar geleden, that entire phrase takes up the first position. The verb vond must come second, which pushes the subject ik to the third position.
What are the parts that make up the word stamboom?
It is a compound noun made of stam (trunk or stem) and boom (tree). Together, they form the Dutch word for "family tree".
