Questions & Answers about Slonovi žive dugo, ovom slonu je samo šezdeset godina.

Why do we say ovom slonu (dative) instead of ovaj slon (nominative)?

In Croatian, age is expressed using the dative case. You don't say that an elephant "is" sixty years old, but rather that sixty years "are to" the elephant. This is called a dative experiencer construction, which is why we use the dative form ovom slonu.

Why is the word for years godina? Doesn't that just mean one year?

It looks exactly like the nominative singular word for "year", but here godina is actually in the genitive plural. In Croatian, any number from five onwards (like šezdeset) requires the noun that follows it to be in the genitive plural form, which translates literally as "of years".

Since sixty years is plural, why do we use je (is) instead of su (are)?

When you use numbers five and above in Croatian, the grammatical subject becomes a quantity, and the verb defaults to the third-person singular form. So, rather than saying "sixty years are", the grammar behaves like "it is sixty of years".

How does the word order work with je in the second half of the sentence?

The verb je is a clitic (an unstressed little word) that naturally falls into the second position of its clause. The phrase ovom slonu (to this elephant) counts as a single logical unit, making it the first position. Therefore, je correctly tucks in right after the whole phrase.
