Quedarse: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

Quedarse means "to stay" or "to remain." It's the reflexive counterpart to the non-reflexive quedar (which has a wide range of meanings: "to be located," "to fit," "to agree on a meeting," "to have left"). The reflexive quedarse is specifically about choosing to remain somewhere.

It's a fully regular reflexive -ar verb.

Common Uses

Quedarse has several core meanings beyond simple "to stay":

To remain in a place — me quedo en casa
To keep something for oneself — quédate con el cambio ("keep the change")
To end up in a state — se quedó sorprendido ("he ended up surprised")
To fall into sleep — se quedó dormido ("he fell asleep")

Quédate con el cambio.

Keep the change.

Se quedó dormido en el sofá.

He fell asleep on the couch.

Me quedé sin palabras.

I was left speechless.

Nos quedamos sin gasolina en la carretera.

We ran out of gas on the highway.

Quedarse sin + noun means "to run out of..." or "to be left without..." It's the standard idiom for running out of things: quedarse sin dinero (to run out of money), quedarse sin tiempo (to run out of time).

The construction quedarse + past participle often translates as "to end up / to be left [in a state]." Se quedó callada = "she went quiet"; nos quedamos solos = "we were left alone."
