Sentarse: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

Sentarse means "to sit down." It's reflexive ("to seat oneself") and also an e → ie stem-changing verb: sent- becomes sient- when the stem carries the stress.

Don't confuse sentarse ("to sit down") with sentirse ("to feel"). Both have e → ie stem changes and look similar — but one is -ar and the other is -ir.

Common Uses

Sentarse is for the physical act of sitting down. To describe the state of being seated, Spanish uses estar sentado (with the past participle as an adjective) rather than the reflexive verb.

Está sentado en la primera fila.

He is sitting in the front row.

Nos sentamos a conversar un rato.

We sat down to chat for a while.

Se sentaron alrededor de la mesa.

They sat around the table.

Sentarse vs. sentirse: sentarse is about putting your body on a seat; sentirse is about how you feel emotionally or physically. Me siento bien = "I feel good"; me siento aquí = "I sit here." Only context and endings distinguish them.
