Acostarse: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

Acostarse means "to go to bed" or "to lie down." It's reflexive because you're doing the action to yourself — literally "to lay oneself down." It's also an o → ue stem-changing verb: acost- becomes acuest- when the stem carries the stress.

Present Indicative

Notice that nosotros keeps the unstressed acost- stem.

Common Uses

Acostarse covers both "going to bed for the night" and the simpler act of "lying down." You can also use it with the preposition con to describe sleeping with someone (romantic sense).

Se acostó en el sofá a ver televisión.

He lay down on the couch to watch TV.

Los niños ya están acostados.

The children are already in bed.

Me acuesto temprano porque mañana trabajo.

I'm going to bed early because I work tomorrow.

The non-reflexive acostar means "to put [someone else] to bed." Parents acuestan a los niños (put the kids to bed); the kids themselves se acuestan (go to bed).
