Pagar means "to pay." It's a regular -ar verb, but because it ends in -gar, the g changes to gu before e to preserve the hard "g" sound. Without this change, pagé would turn the "g" into an "h" sound (like in página).
This spelling change affects the yo form of the preterite (pagué) and the entire present subjunctive.

Common Uses
In Spanish, you pay for something with pagar + direct object (no preposition), or use pagar por when emphasizing the transaction. You also use pagar for figurative costs like "to pay the price."
Ya pagamos la cuenta.
We already paid the bill.
Vas a pagar las consecuencias.
You're going to face the consequences.
💡
When paying a person, use an indirect-object pronoun: Le pagué al mesero una buena propina — "I paid the waiter a good tip." The money is the direct object, the person is the indirect object.
