پیدا کردن peydâ kardan: to Find

پیدا کردن is the ordinary Iranian Persian verb for “find, locate, discover, or obtain.” It is a compound predicate: پیدا contributes the result “found/available,” while کردن carries tense, agreement, negation, and mood. The finder is the subject and the thing found is normally a direct object: کلید را پیدا کردم “I found the key.”

Persian pairs transitive پیدا کردن with intransitive پیدا شدن “turn up, be found, emerge.” English sometimes uses passive “be found” and sometimes an intransitive expression such as “turn up”; Persian شدن covers the result without necessarily presenting an agent. The simple verb یافتن is a close synonym but is markedly more common in edited, academic, and formal prose than in everyday conversation.

بالاخره کلید انبار را زیر صندلی پیدا کردم.

bâlâkhare kelid-e anbâr râ zir-e sandali peydâ kardam.

I finally found the storeroom key under the chair. (neutral standard)

امیدوارم تا آخر هفته خانه‌ی مناسبی پیدا کنیم.

omidvâram tâ âkhar-e hafte khâne-ye monâsebi peydâ konim.

I hope we find a suitable home by the end of the week. (neutral standard; subjunctive)

هنوز راهی برای کاهش هزینه‌ها پیدا نکرده‌اند.

hanuz râhi barâ-ye kâhesh-e hazine-hâ peydâ na-karde-and.

They still have not found a way to reduce the costs. (neutral standard; present perfect)

A direct object and the role of را

A specific, identifiable thing found normally takes را: گوشی‌ام را پیدا کردم، همان نشانی را پیدا کردیم. A nonspecific result often lacks را, especially with کار، خانه، راه، راه‌حل، دوست: کار پیدا کردم means “I found/got a job,” not a particular job already known to both speakers.

بعد از چند ماه جست‌وجو، کار مناسبی پیدا کرد.

ba'd az chand mâh jost-o-ju, kâr-e monâsebi peydâ kard.

After several months of searching, she found a suitable job. (neutral standard; nonspecific object)

آن پرونده‌ی گمشده را در بایگانی قدیمی پیدا کردیم.

ân parvande-ye gomshode râ dar bâyegâni-ye qadimi peydâ kardim.

We found that missing file in the old archive. (neutral standard; definite object)

The result can be abstract. راه پیدا کردن may mean “find a way” or “gain access,” وقت پیدا کردن means “find time,” and فرصت پیدا کردن means “get an opportunity.” These are current lexical extensions, not claims that an abstract entity was literally lost.

اگر فرصت پیدا کردم، عصر به نمایشگاه سر می‌زنم.

agar forsat peydâ kardam, asr be namâyeshgâh sar mi-zanam.

If I get the chance, I’ll stop by the exhibition this evening. (neutral spoken standard)

💡
With پیدا کردن, را follows discourse specificity: کار پیدا کردم introduces a job, while آن کار را پیدا کردم identifies a previously established one.

Internal object clitics

An accessible direct object can attach to پیدا, before the inflected light verb: پیدایش کردم، پیدایت می‌کنم، پیدایش نکردیم. Because پیدا ends in a vowel, standard spelling inserts linking ی before a clitic: پیدا + ـش → پیدایش.

میان جمعیت پیدایت کردم و از دور دست تکان دادم.

miyân-e jam'iyyat peydâ-yat kardam va az dur dast takân dâdam.

I spotted you in the crowd and waved from a distance. (neutral spoken standard; internal clitic)

اگر تا غروب پیدایش نکردید، به نگهبانی خبر بدهید.

agar tâ ghorub peydâ-yash na-kardid, be negahbâni khabar be-dahid.

If you do not find it by sunset, notify security. (polite/plural standard)

In relaxed writing one often sees پیداش (informal), reflecting loss of the linking glide as a separately perceived segment. Standard edited spelling remains پیدایش. The clitic is the object of the whole predicate, not a possessive meaning “its found.”

Transitive پیدا کردن and intransitive پیدا شدن

With پیدا کردن, an agent finds an object. With پیدا شدن, the sought item is the subject and comes into availability: مدرک پیدا شد “the document turned up.” پیدا شدن can receive an English passive translation, but in many contexts it is a lexical intransitive rather than a productive passive; no finder is being profiled.

نگهبان کیف را کنار آسانسور پیدا کرد.

negahbân keyf râ kenâr-e âsânsur peydâ kard.

The security guard found the bag beside the lift. (neutral standard; transitive)

کیف گمشده صبح کنار آسانسور پیدا شد.

keyf-e gomshode sobh kenâr-e âsânsur peydâ shod.

The missing bag turned up beside the lift in the morning. (neutral standard; result without a profiled finder)

The pair follows the broader Persian tendency to use کردن for a causative/transitive member and شدن for an inchoative or result member. It must nevertheless be learned as a lexical pair; not every کردن compound has an equally natural شدن counterpart.

پیدا کردن versus یافتن

پیدا کردن is neutral across conversation and ordinary prose. یافتن (formal/academic/literary) is especially frequent in research findings, official reports, and elevated narration: شواهدی یافت شد، پژوهشگران رابطه‌ای یافتند. In spontaneous Tehran conversation, پیدا کردن is overwhelmingly safer.

پژوهشگران رابطه‌ی معناداری میان دو متغیر یافتند.

pazhuheshgarân râbete-ye ma'nâdâri miyân-e do motaghayyer yâftand.

The researchers found a significant relationship between the two variables. (academic/formal)

یافتن is not obsolete, but its register is different. Its present stem یابـ is also less transparent than the regular کنـ paradigm inside پیدا کردن. The full contrast appears on یافتن: to Find.

دنبال چیزی گشتن or جست‌وجو کردن names the attempt to locate something; پیدا کردن names the successful result. A search can therefore occur without a find.

یک ساعت دنبالش گشتم، ولی پیدایش نکردم.

yek sâ'at donbâl-ash gashtam, vali peydâ-yash na-kardam.

I looked for it for an hour, but I did not find it. (neutral spoken standard)

English “find out” usually means acquiring knowledge, not locating an entity. Persian normally uses فهمیدن، متوجه شدن، پی بردن according to nuance. Likewise, English “find something interesting” is an evaluation, not پیدا کردن; Persian uses به نظر آمدن or جالب یافتن (formal).

💡
Separate process from result: گشتن / جست‌وجو کردن is searching, while پیدا کردن entails success. English “look for” and “find” should not collapse into one Persian verb.

Tehran conversational forms

The light verb has می‌کنه، می‌کنین، می‌کنن (informal, regional: Tehran), while direct-object را becomes رو. Internal clitics commonly appear in the contracted spellings پیداش، پیدات، پیدام in informal messages.

— آدرس درست رو پیدا کردین؟ — آره، آخرش پیداش کردیم.

— âdres-e dorost ro peydâ kardin? — âre, âkhar-esh peydâ-sh kardim.

— Did you find the correct address? — Yes, we finally found it. (informal, regional: Tehran; contracted internal clitic in the reply)

The reply retrieves a referent already named in the question. This is exactly the discourse setting in which a clitic is natural; neutral edited prose would write the internal form as پیدایش کردیم.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting را from a specific object

❌ همان کلید گمشده پیدا کردم.

Incorrect for a specific known key — the direct object takes را.

✅ همان کلید گمشده را داخل کشو پیدا کردم.

hamân kelid-e gomshode râ dâkhel-e keshu peydâ kardam.

I found that missing key inside the drawer.

2. Giving پیدا شدن an agentive direct object

❌ پلیس مدرک تازه را پیدا شد.

Incorrect — an agent finding an object requires پیدا کردن.

✅ پلیس مدرک تازه را نزدیک محل حادثه پیدا کرد.

polis madrak-e tâze râ nazdik-e mahall-e hâdese peydâ kard.

The police found new evidence near the scene of the incident.

3. Translating “find out” literally

❌ پیدا کردم که پرواز لغو شده است.

Incorrect for ‘I found out’ — no entity was located; use فهمیدن or متوجه شدن.

✅ تازه فهمیدم که پرواز عصر لغو شده است.

tâze fahmidam ke parvâz-e asr laghv shode ast.

I just found out that the evening flight has been cancelled.

4. Joining the two members

❌ راه‌حل خوبی پیدا‌کردیم.

Incorrect standard spacing — پیدا and کردن remain separate words.

✅ برای این مشکل راه‌حل ساده‌تری پیدا کردیم.

barâ-ye in moshkel râh-hall-e sâde-tari peydâ kardim.

We found a simpler solution to this problem.

Key Takeaways

  • Inflect only کردن: پیدا می‌کنم، پیدا کردم، پیدا کرده‌ام، پیدا کنم.
  • پیدا کردن is transitive; پیدا شدن presents the item as turning up or becoming available.
  • Use را for a specific object, but not automatically for newly introduced کار، راه، فرصت, and similar results.
  • Internal clitics use linking ی in standard spelling: پیدایش کردم.
  • یافتن is fully current but more formal, academic, and literary than everyday پیدا کردن.
