In a Persian compound verb, the nonverbal element carries much of the lexical meaning, but only the light verb carries tense, aspect, negation, and person. تصمیم گرفتن “to decide” therefore becomes تصمیم گرفتم “I decided,” تصمیم میگرفتم “I used to decide / was deciding,” and تصمیم نگرفتم “I did not decide.” تصمیم itself stays stable.
This division lets one set of past-tense rules apply to hundreds of predicates. The challenge is lexical: learners must know that Persian says تصمیم گرفتن، تماس گرفتن، توضیح دادن، شروع شدن. Once the light verb is known, its ordinary past stem builds the tense.
The light verb is the finite center
| Compound infinitive | Past stem | Simple past | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| کار کردن | کرد | کار کردم | I worked |
| تصمیم گرفتن | گرفت | تصمیم گرفت | he/she decided |
| توضیح دادن | داد | توضیح دادیم | we explained |
| تلفن زدن | زد | تلفن زدید | you called |
| آماده شدن | شد | آماده شدند | they got ready |
The third-singular simple past has zero ending: تصمیم گرفت، توضیح داد، شروع شد. Other persons take ـم، ـی، ـیم، ـید، ـند on the light verb. An ending on the nonverbal noun would instead create an unrelated possessive form or an impossible string.
بعد از چند روز فکر کردن، پیشنهاد را قبول کردم.
ba'd az chand ruz fekr kardan, pishnehâd râ qabul kardam.
After thinking for a few days, I accepted the offer. (neutral standard; قبول کردن in the simple past)
مسئول فنی مشکل را برایمان توضیح داد.
mas'ul-e fanni moshkel râ barâ-yemân towzih dâd.
The technician explained the problem to us. (neutral standard; third-singular zero ending)
Simple past: viewing the compound event as complete
The simple past presents the event as a bounded whole. A change-of-state compound such as خاموش شدن “switch off/go out” naturally focuses the achieved change; an activity such as کار کردن becomes bounded when a time span or completed episode closes it.
چراغهای سالن ناگهان خاموش شدند.
cherâgh-hâ-ye sâlon nâgahân khâmush shodand.
The hall lights suddenly went out. (neutral narrative; completed change)
دیروز سه ساعت روی طرح تازه کار کردیم.
diruz se sâ'at ru-ye tarh-e tâze kâr kardim.
Yesterday we worked on the new design for three hours. (neutral standard; bounded activity)
The nonverbal element does not determine aspect by itself. کار کردیم presents a completed work episode; کار میکردیم presents the activity from inside or as a repeated routine.
Past imperfective: background and habit
For an ongoing or habitual past, put می before the past stem of the light verb: کار میکردم، تصمیم میگرفتیم، تماس میگرفتند. The nonverbal element remains outside the finite verbal word.
وقتی وارد شدم، ناهید با مشتری صحبت میکرد.
vaqti vâred shodam, nâhid bâ moshtari sohbat mi-kard.
When I came in, Nahid was talking to a customer. (neutral narrative; ongoing background)
در شرکت قبلی هر دوشنبه جلسه برگزار میکردیم.
dar sherkat-e qabli har doshanbe jalase bargozâr mi-kardim.
At the previous company, we used to hold a meeting every Monday. (formal-neutral; habitual compound event)
Persian does not insert a separate “used to” auxiliary. The می past plus a past-time or frequency expression creates the habitual reading. See Past Continuous with می.
Negation goes on the light verb
A bounded negative uses نـ + past stem: تماس نگرفتم، توضیح نداد، شروع نشد. A negative ongoing or habitual past uses نمی + past stem: تماس نمیگرفتم، توضیح نمیداد. Never prefix negation to the nonverbal element.
| Viewpoint | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| bounded simple past | جواب دادم | جواب ندادم |
| ongoing/habitual past | جواب میدادم | جواب نمیدادم |
| change of state | تمام شد | تمام نشد |
صبح به اداره تلفن زدم، اما کسی جواب نداد.
sobh be edâre telefon zadam, ammâ kasi javâb nadâd.
I called the office in the morning, but nobody answered. (neutral standard; two bounded compounds)
آن زمان به پیامهای ناشناس جواب نمیدادم.
ân zamân be payâm-hâ-ye nâshenâs javâb nemi-dâdam.
At that time I didn't use to answer unknown messages. (neutral standard; negative habit)
Objects and complements
A specific direct object normally appears with را before the compound predicate: فایل را پیدا کردم، پیشنهاد را قبول کردیم. A prepositional complement is selected by the whole compound: با مدیر صحبت کردم، به سؤال جواب دادم، از سفر لذت بردیم.
فرم تکمیلشده را دیروز تحویل دادم.
form-e takmil-shode râ diruz tahvil dâdam.
I submitted the completed form yesterday. (formal-neutral; specific object before تحویل دادن)
پزشک با خانوادهی بیمار صحبت کرد.
pezeshk bâ khânevâde-ye bimâr sohbat kard.
The doctor spoke with the patient's family. (neutral standard; با selected by صحبت کردن)
The fact that the two lexical pieces are written separately does not license arbitrary word order. Objects and complements may intervene at positions allowed by the whole predicate, but learners should preserve the ordinary nonverbal-element-plus-light-verb order unless a later focus or clitic construction licenses another pattern.
Past progressive with داشتن
To foreground one compound event underway, place past داشتن before the predicate and keep می on the light verb. Both finite verbs agree: داشتیم اتاق را مرتب میکردیم.
داشتیم وسایل سفر را آماده میکردیم که برق رفت.
dâshtim vasâyel-e safar râ âmâde mi-kardim ke barq raft.
We were getting the travel gear ready when the power went out. (neutral spoken standard; progressive compound)
آن لحظه کارمندها داشتند سفارشها را ثبت میکردند.
ân lahze kârmand-hâ dâshtand sefâresh-hâ râ sabt mi-kardand.
At that moment the employees were registering the orders. (careful standard; matched third plural)
Do not put می on داشتن or attach it to آماده. The entire compound predicate remains under the progressive scope described on Past Progressive with داشتن.
Register and connected speech
Past-tense compound verbs are normal in every register. Formal vocabulary may select compounds such as اعلام کردن، بررسی کردن، برگزار شدن; conversation favors everyday predicates and reduces plural endings. Standard تماس گرفتید / تماس گرفتند correspond to Tehran تماس گرفتین / تماس گرفتن (informal, regional: Tehran).
بالاخره با صاحبخونه تماس گرفتین؟
bâlâkhare bâ sâhebkhune tamâs gereftin?
Did you finally contact the landlord? (informal, regional: Tehran; plural/polite)
آره، تماس گرفتیم و مشکل رو حل کردیم.
âre, tamâs gereftim va moshkel ro hal kardim.
Yes, we called and solved the problem. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving the light verb as an infinitive
❌ ما دیروز تصمیم گرفتن.
Incorrect — گرفتن is an infinitive and carries no first-plural past ending.
✅ ما دیروز تصمیم گرفتیم یک روز صبر کنیم.
mâ diruz tasmim gereftim yek ruz sabr konim.
Yesterday we decided to wait one day.
2. Marking the nonverbal noun for tense
❌ من کاردم در خانه.
Incorrect — tense and person belong on کردن; کاردم is not ‘I worked.’
✅ من دیروز تمام روز در خانه کار کردم.
man diruz tamâm-e ruz dar khâne kâr kardam.
I worked at home all day yesterday.
3. Prefixing negation to the noun
❌ دیشب نتماس گرفتیم.
Incorrect — negation belongs on the past stem of گرفتن.
✅ دیروز با بخش فروش تماس نگرفتم.
diruz bâ bakhsh-e forush tamâs nagereftam.
I didn't contact the sales department yesterday.
4. Using present morphology for a completed past event
❌ هفتهی پیش فرم را تحویل میدهم.
Incorrect for a completed past event — میدهم is present; use past دادم.
✅ هفتهی پیش فرم درخواست را تحویل دادم.
hafte-ye pish form-e darkhâst râ tahvil dâdam.
I submitted the application form last week.
Key Takeaways
- Keep the nonverbal element stable and put tense, aspect, negation, and agreement on the light verb.
- Use the simple past for bounded compound events and the می past for ongoing or habitual ones.
- Put نـ / نمی on the light verb, never on the nonverbal noun or adjective.
- Place specific objects with را and learn each compound's complements as part of its lexical entry.
- A داشتن progressive adds a matched auxiliary but leaves می on the light verb.
