Pozdraviti / pozdravljati ("to greet, to say hello") is the everyday verb of social contact: it covers waving across the street, shaking hands at a door, and the formula you tack onto the end of a phone call — Pozdravi sve! ("Say hi to everyone!"). It is also an aspect pair worth learning early, because the two members divide labour cleanly: the perfective pozdraviti is a single greeting, the imperfective pozdravljati is repeated or habitual greeting. The related noun pozdrav ("a greeting", and the standard sign-off "regards") will follow you into every email you write.
The aspect pair
| Imperfective | Perfective | |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | pozdravljati | pozdraviti |
| Core sense | greet (habitually, repeatedly, on the way) | greet (once, on this occasion) |
| Present stem | pozdravlj- | pozdrav- |
| Typical use | Uvijek me pozdravlja. "He always greets me." | Pozdravi ga od mene. "Say hi to him from me." |
The imperfective shows jotation v → vlj: the suffix -jati fuses with the stem-final v, giving pozdravljam (not *pozdravjam). This is the same softening you see in zdravlje "health" and the passive participle pozdravljen. Knowing this one alternation tells you how the whole imperfective inflects. The general aspect machinery is laid out on aspect overview.
pozdraviti — present (i-class, perfective)
Regular i-class: stem pozdrav- + -im, -iš, -i, -imo, -ite, -e. Because pozdraviti is perfective, this "present" does not mean "I am greeting now" — it carries future or subordinate meaning (čim ga vidim, pozdravim ga "as soon as I see him, I greet him").
| Person | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ja | pozdravim | I greet (once) |
| ti | pozdraviš | you greet |
| on/ona/ono | pozdravi | he/she/it greets |
| mi | pozdravimo | we greet |
| vi | pozdravite | you greet |
| oni/one/ona | pozdrave | they greet |
pozdravljati — present (a-class, imperfective)
The imperfective conjugates as an a-class verb on the softened stem pozdravlj-: pozdravljam, pozdravljaš … pozdravljaju.
| Person | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ja | pozdravljam | I greet (habitually) |
| ti | pozdravljaš | you greet |
| on/ona/ono | pozdravlja | he/she/it greets |
| mi | pozdravljamo | we greet |
| vi | pozdravljate | you greet |
| oni/one/ona | pozdravljaju | they greet |
Susjed me uvijek pozdravlja kad se sretnemo na stubištu.
The neighbour always greets me when we meet on the stairs. — imperfective: habitual.
Pozdravi tetu, idemo!
Say hello to your aunt, we're leaving! — perfective: one greeting, here and now.
The l-participle
| Gender / number | pozdraviti | pozdravljati |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | pozdravio | pozdravljao |
| feminine singular | pozdravila | pozdravljala |
| neuter singular | pozdravilo | pozdravljalo |
| masculine plural | pozdravili | pozdravljali |
| feminine plural | pozdravile | pozdravljale |
| neuter plural | pozdravila | pozdravljala |
Perfect tense (perfekt)
Clitic biti (sam, si, je, smo, ste, su) + the l-participle, which agrees with the subject. The aspect contrast is sharp here: pozdravio sam ga is one completed greeting; pozdravljao sam ga describes repeated greeting over time.
| Person | pozdraviti (masc. / fem.) |
|---|---|
| ja | pozdravio / pozdravila sam |
| ti | pozdravio / pozdravila si |
| on / ona | pozdravio / pozdravila je |
| mi | pozdravili / pozdravile smo |
| vi | pozdravili / pozdravile ste |
| oni / one | pozdravili / pozdravile su |
Pozdravila sam ga, ali me nije ni primijetio.
I said hello to him, but he didn't even notice me. — feminine speaker, one completed greeting.
Future I (futur prvi)
The infinitive ends in -ti and drops its -i before the clitic: pozdravit ću. The imperfective behaves the same: pozdravljat ću.
| Person | pozdraviti |
|---|---|
| ja | pozdravit ću |
| ti | pozdravit ćeš |
| on/ona/ono | pozdravit će |
| mi | pozdravit ćemo |
| vi | pozdravit ćete |
| oni/one/ona | pozdravit će |
Vidjet ću ih sutra pa ću ih pozdraviti od tebe.
I'll see them tomorrow, so I'll say hi to them from you.
Imperative
The perfective pozdravi! is by far the most common — you want a single act of greeting. This is the form behind the everyday request Pozdravi mi obitelj! ("Give my regards to your family!").
| Person | pozdraviti | pozdravljati |
|---|---|---|
| ti | pozdravi | pozdravljaj |
| mi | pozdravimo | pozdravljajmo |
| vi | pozdravite | pozdravljajte |
Pozdravi roditelje od mene!
Say hello to your parents from me! — the classic 'give my regards' formula.
Conditional I (kondicional prvi)
The bih-clitics (bih, bi, bi, bismo, biste, bi) + the l-participle.
| Person | pozdraviti (masc.) |
|---|---|
| ja | pozdravio bih |
| ti | pozdravio bi |
| on/ona/ono | pozdravio / pozdravila / pozdravilo bi |
| mi | pozdravili bismo |
| vi | pozdravili biste |
| oni/one/ona | pozdravili bi |
Pozdravio bih ga, ali ne znam kako se zove.
I'd greet him, but I don't know his name.
Other forms
- Passive participle: pozdravljen, pozdravljena, pozdravljeno ("greeted") — note the same v → vlj jotation as the imperfective. Used in formulas: toplo pozdravljen "warmly welcomed".
- Present verbal adverb (imperfective): pozdravljajući ("while greeting"), found in narrative writing — Ušao je pozdravljajući sve redom "He came in greeting everyone in turn."
Bili smo lijepo pozdravljeni na ulazu.
We were warmly greeted at the entrance. — passive participle 'pozdravljeni'.
Key uses and government
1. pozdraviti nekoga — accusative of the person
The person greeted goes in the accusative. With clitic pronouns this is ga (him), je / ju (her), ih (them), in the usual second-position slot.
Pozdravi ga kad ga vidiš.
Say hi to him when you see him. — accusative clitic 'ga'.
Pozdravila nas je s vrata i otišla.
She greeted us from the door and left. — accusative 'nas'.
2. pozdraviti od + genitive — "say hi from someone"
To convey a greeting on someone's behalf, use od + the genitive: Pozdravi je od mene ("Say hi to her from me").
Pozdravi mamu od cijele ekipe.
Say hi to your mum from the whole crew. — 'od' + genitive for the sender.
3. pozdraviti se s + instrumental — "say goodbye / take leave"
The reflexive pozdraviti se s nekim means to exchange goodbyes — the person you part from takes s(a) + the instrumental. This is the standard way to say "we said our goodbyes".
Pozdravili smo se s domaćinima i krenuli kući.
We said goodbye to our hosts and headed home. — 'pozdraviti se s' + instrumental.
Nisu se ni pozdravili, samo su otišli.
They didn't even say goodbye, they just left.
4. Pozdrav as a sign-off
The noun pozdrav ("a greeting / regards") is the standard friendly close of an email or message, and plural pozdravi / lijepi pozdravi ("kind regards") is the formal equivalent of "Best regards".
Lijep pozdrav, Ana.
Kind regards, Ana. — standard email sign-off.
Common Mistakes
❌ Pozdravi njemu od mene.
Wrong case — the person greeted is the accusative 'ga', not the dative 'njemu'.
✅ Pozdravi ga od mene.
Say hi to him from me.
❌ Pozdravio se s prijatelje.
Wrong case — 'pozdraviti se s' takes the instrumental: 's prijateljima', not the accusative.
✅ Pozdravio se s prijateljima.
He said goodbye to his friends.
❌ Uvijek me pozdravi na ulici.
Aspect clash — a habitual, repeated action needs the imperfective 'pozdravlja', not the one-off perfective.
✅ Uvijek me pozdravlja na ulici.
He always greets me on the street.
❌ Ja pozdravjam susjede svako jutro.
Spelling — the imperfective shows v → vlj jotation: 'pozdravljam', not '*pozdravjam'.
✅ Ja pozdravljam susjede svako jutro.
I greet the neighbours every morning.
❌ Se pozdravila s nama i otišla.
Clitic order — the reflexive 'se' can't open a clause; it goes in second position, after the first stressed word: 'Pozdravila se…'
✅ Pozdravila se s nama i otišla.
She said goodbye to us and left.
