B2 is the transition from telling a coherent story to reshaping information for argument, attribution, and register. Follow this route after the B1 path. You will revisit tense, mood, clitics, and discourse, but with more demanding functions: locating an event before another hypothetical event, choosing who remains visible in a passive, and controlling what a sentence presents as topic or focus.
Prerequisites and diagnostic
Begin when you can sustain a four-minute narrative, explain common present-subjunctive choices, build basic relative clauses, use frequent two-pronoun combinations, and report a short conversation without losing speaker reference. Try these diagnostics from memory:
- Complete Em sorprèn que ja… with a completed subordinate event, and Si ho haguéssim sabut… with its result. If you avoid both, begin at Unit 1.
- Recast “The council approved the plan” so that the plan—not the council—is the discourse center. If you know only one passive template, Unit 2 is essential.
- Present the same fact first as neutral information, then as a correction of one detail. If word order never changes, prioritize Unit 4.
- Summarize a news report while distinguishing confirmed facts, attributed claims, and uncertainty. If all claims sound equally certain, prioritize Unit 6.
Keep the recording or text. At B2, improvement should appear in architecture and stance, not merely in longer sentences.
Unit 1 — Locate completed events inside stance and irreality
Study the present perfect subjunctive, the pluperfect subjunctive, and subjunctive sequence of tenses. Then consolidate with which subjunctive tense? and indicative or subjunctive: assertion and stance.
I'm surprised that they published the data before reviewing it.
The publication precedes the present reaction and is packaged as a presupposed fact inside an evaluative frame. The perfect subjunctive marks completion and dependency on that evaluation; it does not imply doubt about whether publication occurred.
If we had received the notice in time, we would have postponed the meeting.
Pair the pluperfect subjunctive with past counterfactual conditionals. Do not reduce this to a two-column formula: vary which consequence is past, present, or mixed and state what is contrary to fact.
Can do: choose among present, imperfect, perfect, and pluperfect subjunctive by time relation and stance; distinguish a still-open possibility from a past counterfactual; explain the choice without saying only “because of a trigger.”
Unit 2 — Choose a voice that serves the information flow
Compare the ser passive, passive se, impersonal se, and impersonal third-person plural. Add generic tu, existential haver-hi, and presentational constructions.
The report was approved by the council after its conclusions had been reviewed.
The ser passive permits an explicit agent and profiles the affected report. Se n'havien revisat suppresses the reviewers, marks the review as already completed, and keeps the conclusions inside the report's reference chain. Catalan often prefers an active, se, or presentational alternative where English readily uses a passive.
Three service points have been opened, and staff will be on duty throughout the weekend.
Can do: produce active and passive versions of one proposition; say what each version backgrounds; avoid using ser + participle as an automatic copy of every English passive.
Unit 3 — Control complex subordination
Work through restrictive versus nonrestrictive relatives, mood in relative clauses, noun complement clauses, factive and semifactive complements, infinitival clauses and control, and heavy clauses after impersonal predicates. Use infinitive or que-clause? as a synthesis page.
We are looking for a solution that reduces the cost without the more distant neighborhoods being excluded from it.
The desired solution is not yet identified, so redueixi appears in the subjunctive. Sense que introduces a separate subject and en resumes the relevant arrangement or benefit.
The fact that demand has increased does not prove that the service is sufficient.
The first clause packages a presupposed fact; the second proposition is denied asserted status by no demostra que. Advanced subordination is not complexity for its own sake: each dependency says how the writer commits to a proposition.
Can do: punctuate nonrestrictive relatives; select mood in identified versus nonidentified antecedents; choose an infinitive when subjects are controlled and a que-clause when an explicit subject relation is needed.
Unit 4 — Manage topic, focus, and recoverability
Study topic and focus, clefts and pseudoclefts, left and right dislocation, fronting without dislocation, right dislocation, and presentational and inversion constructions. Revisit null subjects so omission remains unambiguous in longer discourse.
The budget has already been approved; the timetable, by contrast, still has to be negotiated.
The left-dislocated objects establish topics and are resumed by l'. English typically relies on stress or a passive for the same organization. The comma and clitic are structural, not optional decoration.
It was the staff shortage that forced the opening hours to be reduced.
This cleft corrects or highlights the cause. Use it where a contrast is live; a whole essay made of clefts sounds theatrically emphatic.
Can do: present an entity as topic, correct one constituent as narrow focus, and introduce a new referent without making an old one seem new. Have a reader underline every pronoun's antecedent; any hesitation signals a reference problem.
Unit 5 — Write formally without manufacturing bureaucracy
Compare journalistic style, academic style, and administrative Catalan. Study nominalization, academic connectors, argumentative relations, and maintaining reference across paragraphs. Finish with overcorrecting toward artificial formal Catalan.
The available data suggest that the measure has reduced consumption, although its long-term impact cannot yet be assessed.
This sentence is (academic) because it attributes evidence, hedges the inference, and marks a limitation—not simply because it contains long words. Compare an active, a passive, and a nominalized version during revision. Keep the version that clarifies the argument's actors and relations.
According to the technical report, work will begin on Monday; meanwhile, temporary access will remain in place.
This is suitable (formal/administrative) prose because source, timing, and consequence are explicit. Do not import Spanish-looking calques to sound more official; consult common Spanish grammatical calques during proofreading.
Can do: write the same information as a news lead, an academic qualification, and an administrative notice; reduce needless nominalizations; maintain a clear reference chain across three paragraphs.
Unit 6 — Analyze news and build pluricentric competence
Read the annotated news report as the required B2 text. Identify headline tense, attribution, reportive conditional, passive choice, and the division between confirmed and unconfirmed information. Then compare the editorial, where evaluation is more visible.
For the dialogue requirement, return to the annotated interview and reanalyze it at B2 depth: track question design, turn-taking, tense backshift, stance, and every weak pronoun. The source text is B1-accessible, but the assigned analysis and your reconstructed interview must meet the B2 production targets in this path.
According to municipal sources, the fault reportedly occurred during maintenance work.
The reportive conditional is (journalistic) and must not substitute for explicit attribution. Ask who is responsible for each proposition and whether the source has verified it.
After the text work, revisit pluricentric standards, regional verb morphology, regional weak-pronoun systems, and regional vowel systems. Your goal is not to produce every variety. It is to read and listen without labeling a valid IEC or AVL form “wrong,” while keeping your own production internally consistent.
Review spiral
Review after 1, 4, 10, and 28 days. Each return must change the operation:
- Notice: annotate forms and their discourse functions in a new text.
- Transform: rewrite voice, mood, or information structure while keeping the proposition stable.
- Produce: write or speak on a new topic without a model.
- Edit: justify three revisions in terms of reader interpretation.
Interleave systems. Turn a news lead into reported speech; recast it with a different voice; then explain how topic and evidential responsibility changed. This is the B2 spiral: old morphology used for richer rhetorical choices.
Exit outcomes and capstone
| Domain | Receptive outcome | Productive outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Mood and time | Interpret perfect subjunctives and counterfactual relations. | Place completed events accurately inside stance and irreality. |
| Voice and structure | Recognize why an agent is expressed, suppressed, or generic. | Select active, passive, impersonal, or presentational framing deliberately. |
| Information flow | Track topic, focus, dislocation, and long reference chains. | Reshape sentences to guide attention without ambiguity. |
| Register and variation | Separate fact, attribution, inference, and evaluation across major standards. | Produce coherent formal prose in one norm and label salient alternatives accurately. |
For the capstone, create a 400-word news analysis and a four-minute interview about the same local issue. The analysis must distinguish verified facts, attributed claims, and your evaluation; use two voice strategies, two perfect-subjunctive constructions, a restrictive and a nonrestrictive relative, and a controlled topic shift. In the interview, reformulate one answer and manage a disagreement. Revisit both four weeks later, revise for a different audience, and explain five changes. Advance when the revision alters structure and stance rather than simply replacing words with more formal synonyms.
Common Mistakes
❌ Si ho hauríem sabut, no hi hauríem anat.
Incorrect — a past counterfactual si-clause requires the pluperfect subjunctive.
✅ Si ho haguéssim sabut, no hi hauríem anat.
If we had known, we would not have gone.
❌ Es van aprovar la proposta ahir.
Incorrect agreement for the intended passive se construction — the singular patient requires a singular verb.
✅ Es va aprovar la proposta ahir.
The proposal was approved yesterday.
Grammatical only if a particular explanatory report is already identified; it does not express the intended search for an as-yet unidentified report.
We are looking for a report that explains all the causes.
❌ El calendari, encara han de negociar.
Incorrect — a left-dislocated direct object must be resumed by a clitic.
✅ El calendari, encara l'han de negociar.
The timetable still has to be negotiated.
Key Takeaways
- Perfect subjunctives encode both temporal completion and the clause's stance relation.
- Voice determines which participants remain visible; do not translate English passives mechanically.
- Complex subordination should clarify commitment and dependency, not display sentence length.
- Topic, focus, dislocation, and clefts guide the reader's attention and require recoverable reference.
- Formal style comes from explicit relations, attribution, and calibrated claims—not inflated vocabulary.
- Analyze news across varieties, but produce one coherent standard and label legitimate alternatives fairly.
