B1 is where Catalan becomes a tool for sustained narration and explanation rather than a chain of short transactions. Follow this route after the A2 path. The aim is not error-free complexity: it is enough control of tense, mood, reference, and discourse to keep a listener oriented through several minutes or a reader through several paragraphs.
Prerequisites and entry diagnostic
You should already be able to narrate a short past event with the periphrastic past, provide background with the imperfect, use common direct and indirect object pronouns, give instructions, and write a connected personal message. Test production rather than recognition:
- Tell a ninety-second story with a scene, an interruption, and a present consequence. If every past verb has the same function, begin at Unit 1.
- Complete Vull que…, No crec que…, and Quan arribis… without consulting a table. If you cannot, Unit 2 is your main new system.
- Combine two statements about the same person without repeating the noun. If you avoid relative clauses, prioritize Unit 3.
- Retell three things another person said while keeping speaker and time reference clear. If not, prioritize Unit 5.
Keep the output. You will repeat the same diagnostic after the capstone and compare organization, not merely verb accuracy.
Unit 1 — Make past tenses divide narrative labor
Study the past-tense decision guide, periphrastic past versus imperfect, present perfect versus periphrastic past, and past tenses with time expressions. Add translating the English simple past, because one English form may correspond to several Catalan discourse choices.
Ja havíem tancat la botiga quan ens van trucar per dir que faltava un paquet.
We had already closed the shop when they called to say that a parcel was missing.
Bring in the pluperfect only after event/background contrasts are stable. In the example, havíem tancat is anterior to the call, van trucar advances the event line, and faltava describes the state reported at that moment.
Can do: narrate an event in chronological order, then retell it beginning with the outcome; mark background, foreground, and prior past deliberately; explain why each tense was chosen.
Checkpoint: give a listener six shuffled event cards. Your narration must let them restore the sequence without seeing your notes.
Unit 2 — Build a predictive model of the subjunctive
Begin with what the subjunctive contributes, not a trigger list. Then learn formation for regular -ar verbs and other conjugations, followed by velar and irregular stems and ser, estar, and haver.
Organize use by stance: wishes and influence, emotion and evaluation, doubt and denial, impersonal expressions, purpose with perquè, and future time clauses.
Vull que m'avisis quan arribis perquè puguem començar tots junts.
I want you to let me know when you arrive so that we can all begin together.
Three subjunctives do different work: desired action, future-dependent time, and purpose. English often leaves all three verbs morphologically ordinary, so translation alone will not predict Catalan mood.
No crec que la proposta sigui perfecta, però és possible que resolgui el problema principal.
I don't think the proposal is perfect, but it may solve the main problem.
Can do: contrast an asserted fact with a desired, doubted, evaluated, or future-dependent event; produce present subjunctive in six frequent frames; hear the stance difference in paired examples.
Unit 3 — Expand noun phrases with relative clauses
Start with relative que, then add prepositional relatives with què, qui, and el qual, relative on, and possessive relatives with del qual. Use que, què, qui, or el qual? as your decision page.
La cooperativa amb què col·laborem ha obert un espai on els joves poden estudiar.
The cooperative we work with has opened a space where young people can study.
Catalan normally keeps a required preposition before the relative form; English often strands it at the end. Build each relative from the simple clause: col·laborem amb la cooperativa → la cooperativa amb què col·laborem.
Vaig parlar amb la directora, l'equip de la qual havia preparat l'informe.
I spoke with the director, whose team had prepared the report.
The second pattern is (formal) and more common in careful writing than casual conversation. Register-label it rather than forcing it into every spoken answer.
Can do: identify the antecedent of each relative; preserve a selected preposition; combine short clauses without a string of repeated nouns.
Unit 4 — Combine weak pronouns without losing the listener
Review individual clitics, then study ordering two weak pronouns, li plus el/la/els/les, combinations with en and hi, and en and hi together. Finish with pronoun placement across verb forms.
Si la Marta necessita les fotografies, demà les hi enviaré.
If Marta needs the photographs, I'll send them to her tomorrow.
Forms and orders vary across standards and speech communities. The linked pages distinguish the Central baseline from (regional: Valencian) and (regional: Balearic) alternatives where needed. Choose one productive system and learn to recognize the others; do not combine the beginning of one sequence with the end of another.
No en queda gaire, però te'n puc guardar una mica.
There isn't much left, but I can save you some.
Can do: replace two recoverable complements in familiar patterns; place the cluster before a finite verb or after a permitted nonfinite/imperative form; unpack a cluster back into full noun phrases.
Checkpoint: narrate a handover involving two people and three objects. Your listener draws arrows for giver, recipient, object, source, and destination. If the arrows become ambiguous, simplify and rebuild.
Unit 5 — Report speech and preserve viewpoint
Prepare with complement clauses, then study reported speech. That page contains B2 depth; at B1, focus on reporting verbs, person reference, time adverbs, and the basic shift between direct and indirect speech. Add emails and messages to compare spoken and written reporting.
La Núria va dir que arribaria més tard perquè havia perdut l'autobús.
Núria said that she would arrive later because she had missed the bus.
English and Catalan both allow tense adjustment, but neither applies a blind mechanical backshift in every context. Preserve a present tense when the reported claim is still presented as current; shift when the viewpoint genuinely moves to a past reporting center.
El professor ha explicat que l'examen comença a les nou.
The teacher explained that the exam starts at nine.
Can do: report a short exchange without confusing the original and current speakers; adjust pronouns and time expressions; distinguish a still-valid timetable from a past prediction.
Unit 6 — Sustain discourse and manage interaction
Revisit A2 connectors, then study the conversational work of doncs, bé, clar and esclar, en fi and al capdavall, and de tota manera. Pair them with turn-taking, managing disagreement, and hedges and softeners.
Bé, entenc el que proposes; de tota manera, hauríem de consultar-ho amb la resta de l'equip.
Well, I understand what you're proposing; all the same, we should consult the rest of the team about it.
Read the annotated interview as the required dialogue and the travel blog as the required sustained text. Shadow the interview for turn management; retell the travel blog with a different destination for narrative transfer.
Review spiral and variety-aware listening
Use a 1–3–7–21-day cycle. On each return, combine the new unit with an older system: a past story containing relative clauses, an opinion containing a subjunctive frame, or reported speech with clitic combinations. At the final interval, change topic and medium—speech to writing or writing to speech.
After Unit 2, work through regional listening and one regional overview: Central, Valencian, Balearic, or the variety relevant to your community. Build receptive flexibility while retaining a coherent production model. Formal writing can follow IEC or AVL norms; label the standard and do not present legitimate alternatives as learner errors.
Exit outcomes and capstone
| System | Receptive outcome | Productive outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative time | Follow shifts among background, event line, prior past, and present relevance. | Tell a structured four-minute story with deliberate tense choices. |
| Mood and subordination | Recognize why frequent stance frames select the subjunctive. | Use the present subjunctive for wishes, evaluation, doubt, purpose, and future time. |
| Reference | Recover antecedents of relatives and common two-clitic clusters. | Link noun phrases and avoid repetition without creating ambiguity. |
| Discourse | Follow reported viewpoints and common conversational markers. | Report an exchange, manage a disagreement, and sustain several paragraphs. |
For the capstone, interview a speaker—or script two credible voices—about a local change. Produce a four-minute edited audio report and a 250-word written version. Include a layered past narrative, two reported statements, two relative clauses, three justified subjunctives, and two clitic combinations. End with your position, softened appropriately. Repeat the report one week later with only five keyword notes. Advance when the listener can track time, reference, and viewpoint without asking who or when you mean.
Common Mistakes
⚠️ Quan va arribar, ja vam sopar.
Grammatical if dinner followed the arrival, but it does not express the intended prior event.
✅ Quan va arribar, ja havíem sopat.
When they arrived, we had already eaten dinner.
❌ Vull que em trucaràs demà.
Incorrect — a desired action after vull que requires the subjunctive, not the future indicative.
✅ Vull que em truquis demà.
I want you to call me tomorrow.
The correct example follows the Central baseline. Vull que em truques demà is also correct (regional: Valencian): truques is the Valencian present subjunctive here, not an indicative error.
❌ L'associació que hi col·laboro organitza el taller.
Incorrect — col·laborar selects amb, which must be expressed before the relative.
✅ L'associació amb què col·laboro organitza el taller.
The association I collaborate with is organizing the workshop.
❌ La Núria va dir: que arribaria tard.
Incorrect — indirect speech does not keep the colon used to introduce a direct quotation.
✅ La Núria va dir que arribaria tard.
Núria said that she would arrive late.
Key Takeaways
- Past tenses organize narrative layers; they are not interchangeable translations of the English simple past.
- Learn the subjunctive as nonasserted or stance-bound content, then attach the major trigger families to that model.
- Relative clauses and weak-pronoun clusters must improve cohesion without sacrificing recoverable reference.
- Reported speech requires control of viewpoint, not automatic tense substitution.
- Recycle grammar in sustained speaking and writing with delayed, cross-topic tasks.
- Develop receptive breadth across varieties while maintaining one deliberate productive norm.
