En fi, total, and al capdavall all help a speaker move toward a conclusion, but they package that conclusion differently. En fi can summarize or close a topic, often with resignation; total gives the upshot of a spoken story; al capdavall introduces a considered final reason or evaluation. English anyway, in the end, after all, and so overlap with them, but none maps to one Catalan form in every context.
The key is to ask not only “What conclusion follows?” but also “What is the speaker doing to the conversation?” Closing a frustrating topic, compressing a funny anecdote, and stating the decisive reason are different discourse moves.
Three ways to bring discourse to a close
| Marker | Main function | Usual register | Typical position and punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| en fi | Summary, resignation, topic closure, return after a digression | Neutral in speech and prose; emotional coloring comes from prosody | Usually turn- or sentence-initial, followed by a comma |
| total | Compressed upshot or punch line of a story | (informal), especially conversational | Initial; often total, que... |
| al capdavall | Final consideration; also an eventual outcome after obstacles or contrary expectations | Neutral to (formal); comfortable in reflective prose | Initial or parenthetical, normally set off by a comma |
Anyway, we'll talk about it tomorrow with a clearer head. (neutral topic closure)
Total, que vam perdre l'últim tren i ens va tocar tornar a peu.
So, the upshot is that we missed the last train and had to walk home. (informal story summary)
Ultimately, a public policy has to be judged by its results. (considered conclusion)
En fi: summary, resignation, and conversational closure
At its most neutral, en fi gathers what came before into a brief conclusion. With a sigh, a pause, or a low falling tone, it can instead convey acceptance of an unwelcome reality: “there is nothing more useful to add.” That resigning force is pragmatic, not built into the two words.
No ens han concedit la subvenció. En fi, haurem de reduir el pressupost i tornar-ho a provar l'any vinent.
They haven't awarded us the grant. Oh well, we'll have to cut the budget and try again next year. (resigned but constructive)
In short, the three reports agree on the diagnosis: there is a staff shortage. (neutral written summary)
In conversation, en fi can also end a digression and restore the main line. Phrases such as tornant al tema or com et deia make that return explicit.
We started talking about the neighborhood, school, when we were children... Anyway, back to the point, can you come on Friday?
A bare, heavily stressed En fi! can communicate irritation or disbelief. It is therefore safer to complete the move with a constructive clause in sensitive exchanges. Compare the direct and softened versions:
En fi, aquesta discussió no porta enlloc.
Well, this discussion is going nowhere. (direct; may sound dismissive)
En fi, potser ens convé deixar-ho aquí i reprendre-ho quan tinguem totes les dades.
Well, perhaps we should leave it here and return to it when we have all the data. (softened proposal)
Total: the conversational upshot
Discourse-marker total is not the adjective meaning “total” and does not agree with a noun. It packages a sequence as a memorable result, often in total, que + clause. It is particularly natural when a story has accumulated several details and the speaker now gives the outcome.
Primer no trobàvem les claus, després l'ascensor no funcionava... Total, que vam arribar mitja hora tard.
First we couldn't find the keys, then the lift wasn't working... So we ended up arriving half an hour late. (informal narrative closure)
She said she was only coming for five minutes. In the end, she stayed for dinner and left at one. (informal, mildly amused)
It can also dismiss intermediate detail: “whatever the exact route, this was the result.” That compression is useful among friends but usually too conversational for a research article, an administrative decision, or a formal letter. There, en definitiva, en resum or a precise inferential connector is preferable.
—So how did the meeting end? —Basically, they've postponed the vote until Monday. (informal exchange)
Do not assume that every speaker or region uses total with the same frequency or comic rhythm. The construction is widely intelligible, but conversational habits vary across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese Catalan.
Al capdavall: the decisive consideration
In its evaluative use, al capdavall means roughly “when everything is considered” or “ultimately.” It asks the listener to set secondary facts aside and accept a final reason, principle, or evaluation. The expression also has a standard temporal value, “finally,” especially when an outcome arrives after obstacles or contrary expectations; that is more specific than merely naming the last event in a sequence.
We can discuss the schedule, but ultimately the deadline is set by the contract.
After all, if the project is not accessible, it will not meet its main objective. (formal reasoning)
We did not think they would reach an agreement, but in the end they signed the deal. (temporal culmination after a contrary expectation)
The closely related al cap i a la fi performs a similar conclusive function and is also standard. Al final commonly reports what eventually happened in a sequence without adding the evaluative force of “all things considered” or the marked culmination that temporal al capdavall can convey.
In the end, we ate at home because all the restaurants were full. (temporal outcome)
After all, eating at home was the calmest option. (final evaluation, not simply the last event)
Position, scope, and punctuation
When these markers introduce an independent sentence, a comma normally separates them from the proposition: En fi, marxem; Total, que no va venir; Al capdavall, tenia raó. A parenthetical marker takes two commas or dashes.
The decision, ultimately, will be up to the families. (parenthetical scope over the whole claim)
Sentence-final en fi is possible as an afterthought, but intonation becomes crucial and often suggests weary acceptance. Total is much less natural as a detached formal afterthought. Al capdavall normally precedes the consideration it frames.
Scope matters. In Al capdavall, només ajornarem una setmana la inauguració, the marker frames the entire minimization. In Només ajornarem, al capdavall, una setmana la inauguració, the interruption is heavier and can make the reader work to recover the sentence. Put the marker where its logical reach is easy to see.
Choosing by purpose and register
| If your purpose is... | Prefer... | Avoid... |
|---|---|---|
| Accept a setback and move on | en fi | total in a formal exchange |
| Give the punch line of an anecdote | total, que...(informal) | en conclusió, which sounds comically academic |
| State the decisive final reason | al capdavall | al final if no temporal sequence is meant |
| Conclude an academic section | en definitiva, en resum(academic) | stacking several conclusion markers |
Here is a formal exchange and an informal one:
—Considera viable la proposta, senyora Vidal? —Al capdavall, dependrà del finançament; li faré arribar una valoració detallada demà.
—Do you consider the proposal viable, Ms Vidal? —Ultimately, it will depend on funding; I will send you a detailed assessment tomorrow. (formal, consistent vostè forms)
—I què vau fer després?
—And what did you do afterward? —Well, we bought a pizza and went home. (informal)
An interaction can be repaired when a closing marker sounds dismissive:
—En fi, prou d'aquest tema. —No em vols escoltar? —Perdona, ho he dit massa bruscament.
—Anyway, enough of this subject. —You don't want to listen to me? —Sorry, I said that too abruptly. I meant that I'm tired; can we talk about it calmly tomorrow? (natural repair)
The repair names the problem, replaces dismissal with explanation, and offers a time to continue. A different marker alone would not undo the interpersonal effect.
For the distinct concessive meaning of English anyway, compare de tota manera and en qualsevol cas.
Correction Practice
Revise each line before reading the suggested answer.
If there is no temporal sequence, use the final-consideration marker: Al capdavall, tots mereixen ser escoltats.
Common Mistakes
Wrong formula for resigned 'oh well' — per fi expresses eventual arrival or relief, not acceptance of a setback.
Oh well, we'll have to cancel the outing.
Word-for-word invention — the established conclusive marker is al capdavall or al cap i a la fi.
After all, what matters is health.
Overstacked — three closing markers compete instead of clarifying the relation.
✅ En definitiva, no aprovarem el pla.
Ultimately, we will not approve the plan. (formal and concise)
❌ Total, vostè tens raó, senyora Soler.
Mixed address — vostè requires té, not the tu form tens; total is also too casual for this framing.
✅ Al capdavall, vostè té raó, senyora Soler.
Ultimately, you are right, Ms Soler. (considered conclusion with consistent formal address)
❌ Al final, la dignitat no té preu.
Awkward if no sequence or eventual outcome is meant; al final sounds temporal here.
✅ Al capdavall, la dignitat no té preu.
After all, dignity has no price. (decisive evaluation)
Key Takeaways
- Use en fi to summarize, close a topic, return from a digression, or accept an unwelcome result.
- Use conversational total, especially total, que..., to compress a story into its upshot.
- Use al capdavall for the final reason or evaluation that outweighs secondary details; it is not merely temporal al final.
- Punctuation shows parenthetical status, while pauses and intonation distinguish neutral organization from resignation or dismissal.
- A marker cannot repair brusqueness by itself: acknowledge the effect, clarify your intention, and reopen the exchange when needed.
