Sequencing: Primer, Després, Llavors, and Finalment

Catalan sequencing words tell a listener how one step relates to another. Primer opens an order, després moves to what follows, llavors presents the next event or a consequence, and finalment closes the series. Their dictionary meanings overlap, but their communicative force depends on position, punctuation, intonation, and genre.

English “then” is especially deceptive: it may be chronological després, narrative llavors, or consequential aleshores. Choosing by function gives more natural Catalan than translating one English formula mechanically.

The basic map

MarkerMain jobTypical registerFrequent alternatives
primerfirst stepneutral; everydayprimer de tot, en primer lloc (formal)
despréslater or next in time/orderneutraltot seguit, a continuació (formal)
llavorsnext narrative event or result from a situationneutral spoken/narrativealeshores, en aquell moment
finalmentlast step or concluding pointneutral to formalper acabar, en darrer lloc (formal)

Primer renta les verdures; després, talla-les ben petites; finalment, afegeix-hi l'oli.

First wash the vegetables; then cut them very small; finally add the oil.

The series is explicit because each marker has a different job. A slight pause after each one helps the listener hear the boundaries. In writing, a comma is especially useful when a marker introduces a complete step; a very short integrated phrase may omit it: Després vindrem nosaltres.

💡
Do not force every English “then” into llavors. If it only means “later,” choose després; if it means “as a result,” llavors or aleshores is more likely.

Primer opens the route

Primer answers “what happens before the other steps?” It can organize physical instructions, a story, or an argument. Primer de tot is emphatic and conversational; en primer lloc is common in formal presentations and reports.

Primer miraré si queda cap cita lliure i després et trucaré.

First I'll see whether there are any appointments left, and then I'll call you.

En primer lloc, cal distingir les dades observades de les estimacions.

First, the observed data must be distinguished from the estimates. (formal)

In conversation, strong falling stress on primer can sound like an instruction or correction: PRIMER, escolta'm. Softer intonation, a conditional, or an inclusive first-person plural turns the same sequence into a proposal.

Primer, porta'm els contractes i després ja en parlarem.

First, bring me the contracts, and then we'll discuss it. (direct)

Primer podríem repassar els contractes i després mirar què ens convé més.

We could first review the contracts and then see what suits us best. (softened)

The grammar does not encode politeness by itself: primer merely orders the actions. The conditional podríem, inclusive we, and level intonation soften the second version.

Després orders; llavors connects

Després primarily locates something after something else. It can take a complement—després de dinar, després de la reunió—or stand as a connector. Llavors often keeps a narrative moving or draws a practical result from what was just said.

Vam deixar les maletes a l'hotel. Després vam anar a buscar un lloc per sopar.

We left the suitcases at the hotel. Afterwards we went to find somewhere to have dinner.

No quedava cap tren; llavors vam decidir compartir un taxi.

There were no trains left, so then we decided to share a taxi.

The second sentence contains more than bare chronology: the lack of trains motivates the decision. Després vam decidir... would simply place the decision later; llavors invites the inference “given that situation.” Aleshores can perform the same narrative or inferential job and is often preferred in careful written prose.

—I si demà torna a ploure? —Llavors farem la festa al casal.

—And if it rains again tomorrow? —Then we'll hold the party at the community centre.

In that reply, llavors has broad scope over the whole decision. A brief pause after it makes the conditional link clear. When spoken without a pause inside a fast narrative, it can simply propel the story: i llavors va obrir la porta i...

Finalment closes; per fi expresses relief

Finalment marks the final item or eventual outcome. It does not necessarily imply impatience. Per fi adds the speaker's relief after delay or difficulty.

Finalment, envia el formulari i desa'n una còpia.

Finally, send the form and save a copy.

Després de tres hores a la carretera, per fi hem arribat a casa.

After three hours on the road, we have finally made it home at last.

Replacing per fi with finalment reports the end of the journey more neutrally. Replacing every English “finally” with per fi can invent frustration that the speaker never meant.

Informal and formal exchanges

—Primer passem per la fleca? —Sí, i després anem directament a casa.

—Shall we stop by the bakery first? —Yes, and then we'll go straight home. (informal)

This everyday exchange uses a shared question and common després. The rising intonation of fleca? leaves the plan open to negotiation.

—En primer lloc, revisi les dades personals. A continuació, signi al peu de la pàgina. —D'acord; finalment, on he de presentar el document?

—First, review the personal details. Next, sign at the bottom of the page. —All right; finally, where must I submit the document? (formal)

The staff member consistently uses vostè agreement: revisi, signi. The more formal sequence en primer lloc / a continuació / finalment suits an administrative explanation. Switching to revisa or signa halfway through would unexpectedly change to tu.

Near-synonyms are not interchangeable labels

ContrastDifference
primer / en primer llocsame basic order; the second explicitly structures a formal argument
després / a continuacióboth indicate what follows; the second is more procedural and formal
llavors / desprésllavors can convey “given that, then”; després is mainly temporal
finalment / per filast item versus emotionally awaited outcome

Argument order is not always time order. In En primer lloc... En segon lloc... Finalment..., the writer is numbering reasons, not claiming that one fact occurred before another. In narratives, by contrast, després and llavors normally advance time.

Repairing an interaction

—Primer, enviï'm el comprovant i llavors espera aquí. —Perdoni, vol que l'hi enviï ara o després?

—First send me the receipt and then wait here. —Sorry, do you want me to send it now or later? (awkward: vostè and tu are mixed)

The employee begins with the formal imperative enviï'm but then uses informal espera. The customer now has to clarify both timing and address. A natural repair keeps vostè, separates the steps, and softens the order.

—Primer, si us plau, enviï'm el comprovant. Després pot esperar aquí mentre el revisem. —Perfecte, l'hi envio ara mateix.

—First, please send me the receipt. Then you can wait here while we review it. —Perfect, I'm sending it to you right now.

The pause after primer, si us plau, and pot make the interaction less abrupt. Sequencing is interpersonal: enough timing helps, but clipped commands can sound impatient even when every marker is grammatically correct.

Regional perspective

Primer, després, and finalment are pan-regional standard choices. Llavors and aleshores vary in frequency by speaker, region, and genre; both belong to contemporary standard Catalan. Valencian formal instructions commonly use després and a continuació; Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese interaction may prefer different rhythms or additional local markers. Do not treat one area's conversational pace or preference as universal. The safest shared principle is functional: mark the first step, the transition, and the close only as explicitly as the listener needs.

Common Mistakes

1. Importing Spanish forms.

❌ Primero comprovem l'adreça i después fem l'enviament.

Incorrect: primero and después are Spanish forms.

✅ Primer comprovem l'adreça i després fem l'enviament.

First we check the address and then we send it.

2. Stacking equivalent markers.

❌ I llavors després vam tornar a començar de nou.

Heavy and redundant: llavors, després, tornar, and de nou repeat the same sequencing idea.

✅ Llavors vam tornar a començar.

Then we started again.

3. Adding emotion with the wrong final marker.

❌ Per fi, el tercer punt de l'informe descriu els costos.

Wrong force in a neutral list: per fi suggests relief or impatience.

✅ Finalment, el tercer punt de l'informe descriu els costos.

Finally, the third section of the report describes the costs.

4. Mixing forms of address.

❌ Primer, revisi el número; després, envia'm una foto.

Incorrect in one consistent exchange: revisi addresses vostè, while envia'm addresses tu.

✅ Primer, revisi el número; després, enviï'm una foto.

First, check the number; then send me a photo. (vostè throughout)

Key Takeaways

Use primer for the opening step, després for what follows, llavors for a narrative move or a result from the situation, and finalment for the close. Choose the formal alternatives en primer lloc and a continuació only when the genre supports them. Punctuation and a short pause reveal each marker's scope; verb mood, pronouns, and intonation—not the sequence word alone—make a request direct or tactful. The broader punctuation of discourse markers page shows how these cues work in longer texts.
