A persuasive argument is not a list of statements joined by impressive expressions. It is a network of relations: a writer advances a claim, grounds it in evidence, acknowledges a limit, answers that limit, draws an inference, and states how far the conclusion reaches. Catalan discourse markers make those relations explicit, but only if the chosen marker matches the reasoning.
The central discipline is simple: identify the move before choosing the words. Tanmateix cannot turn unrelated sentences into a rebuttal, and per tant cannot make a conclusion follow from insufficient premises. Grammar displays an argument's structure; it does not supply the logic.
A map of argumentative moves
| Move | Question it answers | Common Catalan forms | Default register |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claim | What position am I advancing?
| Evidence | What observation supports it?
| Concession | What valid counterpoint do I grant?
| Rebuttal | Why does the counterpoint not defeat the claim? | tanmateix, ara bé, no obstant això, això no implica que | Neutral–(formal) |
| Inference | What conclusion follows?
| Qualification | Within what limit is the claim valid? All registers; especially important in academic prose |
I maintain that the service should remain public because it guarantees access to the smallest towns. (explicit claim and reason)
The data indicate that consumption has fallen by twelve percent since the tariff change. (evidential support)
It is true that the initial investment is high; nevertheless, the annual savings allow it to be recovered in five years.
The sample excludes municipalities with fewer than one thousand inhabitants; therefore, the conclusion cannot be extended to the entire territory. (inference with an explicit limit)
Claims: state what must be defended
A claim should be identifiable and proportionate to what the text can establish. La tesi d'aquest article és que... is explicitly metadiscursive and belongs mainly to (academic) prose. Sostinc que... marks authorial commitment. Considerem que... can represent a research team or institution, but it should not be used merely to avoid saying who is responsible for a judgment.
The thesis of this chapter is that decentralization improves local response when it is accompanied by stable resources. (academic, qualified claim)
In English, I argue that is common in academic introductions. Catalan can use defenso que or sostinc que, but not every paragraph needs such an announcement. A word-for-word argumento que is possible when the author is explicitly advancing reasons, yet it is not a default translation for every English stance formula. Often the proposition itself is clearer. Use metadiscourse to orient the reader, not to inflate every observation into a thesis.
Evidence: show what licenses the claim
De fet often strengthens, specifies, or corrects what precedes; it does not mean a vague “actually” in every setting. Tal com mostra X points to visible support. Segons X attributes information and leaves responsibility for it with the source. These choices differ in evidential stance.
Demand has not stabilized. In fact, it has grown steadily over the last three months. (strengthening evidence)
As Figure 2 shows, the difference appears after the intervention, not before. (academic reference to evidence)
According to the audit office's report, seven contracts lacked complete documentation. (attributed evidence)
Evidence and example are not interchangeable. One illustrative case can make a claim intelligible without proving its general validity. If you need to distinguish those functions, review giving examples.
Concession and rebuttal: grant, then answer
A concession recognizes a counterpoint as relevant. A rebuttal explains why it does not overturn the central claim. The most compact formal pattern is si bé X, Y; a more visible two-sentence pattern uses És cert que X. Ara bé/Tanmateix, Y.
Although the survey has a large sample, it does not allow the results to be compared by age group. (formal concession)
It is true that the measure reduces traffic in the center. That said, we must examine whether it displaces it to neighboring districts. (concession followed by a pivot)
Tanmateix marks contrast with what came before. Ara bé announces a more deliberate pivot: “granting that, here is the issue that changes the assessment.” Això no implica que attacks an invalid inference directly.
The number of incidents has fallen. This does not imply that the system is safe under all conditions. (explicit rebuttal of an overgeneralization)
The subjunctive sigui follows the negated implication because the embedded proposition is rejected rather than asserted. The deeper mood system is covered elsewhere; here the important point is the argumentative move.
Inference: make the direction of reasoning clear
Per tant and així doncs introduce a conclusion from prior premises. Per tant is the neutral workhorse; així doncs is somewhat more presentational and is common in planned exposition. D'aquí que + subjunctive presents the following state as arising from what precedes.
The two groups received different instructions; therefore, we cannot attribute the entire difference to the treatment.
There is no shared definition of the phenomenon. Hence the criteria must be made explicit before studies are compared. (formal; subjunctive after d'aquí que)
Punctuation helps the reader see the boundary between premise and conclusion. After an independent sentence, write Per tant, .... Within one sentence, a semicolon is often effective: X; per tant, Y. A comma alone should not be used to splice two long independent clauses merely because a connector intervenes. See punctuation with discourse markers.
Qualification: state the exact reach of the conclusion
Qualification is not cowardice. It prevents a claim from reaching beyond its population, period, mechanism, or degree of certainty. A good qualifier names the limit; a weak hedge merely blurs commitment.
In general, the program reduces dropout, but the effect is concentrated in urban centers. (scope qualification)
The results confirm the initial hypothesis to some extent, although they do not explain the territorial differences. (degree qualification)
Compare a direct and a calibrated formulation:
Les xarxes socials provoquen polarització.
Social media cause polarization. (direct, broad causal claim)
In the sample analyzed, intensive use of certain networks is associated with greater polarization; the data do not allow causality to be established. (calibrated claim matching the evidence)
The second is not a polite version of the first: it is a scientifically different proposition.
A decision path for choosing the marker
| What does the new sentence do? | Choose from | Test |
|---|---|---|
| Adds observation that supports the claim | de fet, tal com mostra, segons | Could you identify the evidence? |
Are you genuinely accepting this point? |
| Answers or limits the conceded point | tanmateix, ara bé, això no implica que | Does it explain why the point is not decisive? |
| Follows from premises | per tant, així doncs, d'aquí que | Would denying the conclusion conflict with the premises? |
Which exact boundary is being named? |
Register, interaction, and repair
Formal markers in a written article can sound ceremonial in a quick team conversation. The underlying moves remain, but everyday speech favors shorter forms such as sí, però, d'acord, però, llavors, and pel que veig.
—Although the response rate is low, do you consider the conclusions robust? —Not entirely. That said, I can show you a sensitivity analysis that defines their scope. (formal exchange with vostè)
—Yes, agreed, there are fewer complaints, but that doesn't mean the problem is solved. —So what do you suggest? (informal exchange)
Timing and intonation matter in debate. A quick sí, sí, però... may sound like a ritual concession that ignores the other speaker. A pause after és cert que, followed by an accurate restatement of the concern, signals genuine acknowledgment.
—Sí, sí, però això és secundari. —No has respost a l'objecció.
—Yes, yes, but that's secondary. —You haven't answered the objection. —You're right. The initial cost is important and may exclude small centers. What I maintain is that it can be offset with a dedicated fund. (a concession repaired with substance)
The repair works because it repeats the objection fairly before offering the answer. Replacing però with a grander connector would not help.
These marker systems are part of standard Catalan, while oral preferences and interruption styles vary across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese communities. Formal IEC- or AVL-oriented prose converges strongly here; do not infer that one conversational delivery is universal.
Correction Practice
Identify the intended relation, then revise.
- La mostra és petita. De fet, no podem generalitzar. If the second sentence is a conclusion, write: La mostra és petita. Per tant, no podem generalitzar.
- És cert que el cost és elevat. Per exemple, l'estalvi compensa la inversió. If the second sentence answers the concession, write: És cert que el cost és elevat. Tanmateix, l'estalvi compensa la inversió.
- D'aquí que cal explicitar el criteri. The fixed inferential construction selects the subjunctive: D'aquí que calgui explicitar el criteri.
Common Mistakes
Wrong relation — the second proposition is an inference, not evidence that consumption fell.
Consumption has fallen steadily; therefore, the revenue forecasts should be reviewed.
❌ Si bé el projecte és car. Tanmateix, és necessari.
Fragment — si bé introduces a subordinate concession and cannot stand alone here.
Although the project is expensive, it is necessary.
Incorrect mood after the fixed inferential construction d'aquí que.
Hence we must review the definition. (formal; present subjunctive)
Mechanical stacking — concession and rebuttal markers are piled together without a readable sequence.
It is true that the hypothesis explains the general pattern. Nevertheless, it does not explain the extreme cases.
❌ Per tant, digues-me què en pensa, professora Rius.
Mixed address — digues-me is tu, while pensa and professora Rius frame vostè.
Therefore, tell me what you think, Professor Rius. (consistent formal address)
Key Takeaways
- Separate claim, evidence, concession, rebuttal, inference, and qualification before choosing a marker.
- De fet supports or strengthens; tanmateix and ara bé counter; per tant and d'aquí que infer.
- D'aquí que takes the subjunctive; si bé must introduce a subordinate clause completed by a main clause.
- A useful qualification names a real boundary such as population, context, degree, or evidential strength.
- In both writing and debate, one exact relation is stronger than a stack of formal connectors.
