Contrast can connect two clauses, compare two alternatives, overturn an expectation, or qualify an argument. Catalan assigns those jobs unevenly: però is the everyday local “but,” en canvi sets one case against another, tanmateix marks formal counterexpectation, and ara bé pauses an argument before an important reservation.
English “but” and “however” do not map word for word onto that system. The right question is not “Which Catalan word translates this connector?” but “What relation should the listener infer between these two statements?”
A functional map
| Marker | Core move | Typical register | Punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| però | local opposition or frustrated expectation | all registers; very common in speech | usually preceded by a comma between clauses |
| en canvi | compare two different cases or alternatives | neutral | often set off by commas |
| tanmateix | sentence-level “nevertheless/however” | formal, academic, journalistic | normally followed by a comma initially |
| ara bé | accept a point, then introduce a reservation or reframing | careful speech and formal argument | usually followed by a comma; often starts a new sentence |
Vol venir, però treballa fins tard.
She wants to come, but she works until late.
La sala petita té llum natural; la gran, en canvi, és més silenciosa.
The small room has natural light; the large one, by contrast, is quieter.
Les vendes han augmentat. Tanmateix, el marge de benefici continua baix.
Sales have increased. Nevertheless, the profit margin remains low. (formal)
La proposta és viable. Ara bé, caldrà acordar qui n'assumeix el cost.
The proposal is viable. That said, we will have to agree who bears its cost.
Each example could loosely contain English “but,” but the Catalan markers guide different inferences: obstacle, comparison, counterevidence, and reservation.
Però: the everyday hinge
Però coordinates words, phrases, or clauses and normally introduces information that conflicts with an expectation created by the first part. It can also open a reply, where its force ranges from gentle hesitation to sharp protest.
El restaurant és petit però molt acollidor.
The restaurant is small but very welcoming.
There is usually no comma when però joins two short adjectives. Between full clauses, write one before it: Hi aniria, però no tinc cotxe. In speech, stronger stress on PERÒ makes the correction more confrontational.
—Podem acabar-ho aquesta tarda. —Però si encara no tenim totes les dades!
—We can finish it this afternoon. —But we don't even have all the data yet! (informal protest)
The pattern però si... commonly challenges a premise. It is natural in conversation but too dialogic for most formal reports.
En canvi: align two alternatives
En canvi is most natural when the discourse supplies two comparable topics, times, choices, or results. It does not merely signal that the second sentence is surprising.
A l'agost el barri queda gairebé buit; al setembre, en canvi, els carrers tornen a estar plens.
In August the neighbourhood becomes almost empty; in September, by contrast, the streets are full again.
Jo prefereixo parlar-ne avui; la Clara, en canvi, vol esperar fins dilluns.
I prefer to discuss it today; Clara, on the other hand, wants to wait until Monday.
The paired topics—August/September, I/Clara—license the comparison. If there is no such axis, tanmateix or però may be better: Plovia molt; tanmateix, van jugar el partit expresses counterexpectation, not a contrast between two matched objects.
Tanmateix: a formal counterweight
Tanmateix usually has scope over a whole sentence. It acknowledges the previous claim but says that the next fact remains true despite it. It is common in formal, academic, and journalistic Catalan and can sound bookish in a relaxed chat.
L'estudi inclou una mostra àmplia. Tanmateix, no permet establir una relació causal.
The study includes a large sample. Nevertheless, it does not allow a causal relationship to be established. (academic)
In writing, initial Tanmateix, takes a comma. Medial placement is also possible and more integrated: La mesura no resol, tanmateix, el problema de fons. In speech, pauses on both sides give it deliberate rhetorical weight.
Do not confuse the single word tanmateix with tan mateix, which belongs to a different construction. And do not assume that a rarer connector is automatically more formal: it must express the intended counterexpectation.
Ara bé: grant, pause, qualify
Ara bé often follows a concession: the speaker accepts what has just been said, pauses, and introduces a condition, limitation, or more important question. The literal words “now well” do not explain its discourse function.
És cert que el nou sistema és més ràpid. Ara bé, també hem de comprovar si protegeix les dades personals.
It is true that the new system is faster. That said, we must also check whether it protects personal data.
The full stop and pause make the pivot audible. Però would connect the propositions more tightly and less ceremonially: És més ràpid, però hem de comprovar... The facts remain similar; the argumentative choreography changes.
Direct and softened disagreement
A connector alone does not determine politeness. Pronouns, acknowledgment, modal verbs, and intonation decide whether contrast feels cooperative or abrupt.
No hi estic d'acord: el pressupost és insuficient.
I disagree: the budget is insufficient. (direct)
Entenc la teva proposta. Ara bé, potser hauríem de revisar el pressupost abans de decidir-nos.
I understand your proposal. That said, perhaps we should review the budget before deciding. (softened)
The second version grants the interlocutor's point, uses potser and conditional hauríem, and keeps a measured pause after ara bé. A sarcastic tone could undo that mitigation; grammar and communicative force never map one-to-one.
Informal and formal exchanges
—El sofà blau és més bonic. —Sí, però el gris cap millor al menjador. —És veritat; en canvi, el blau es pot rentar.
—The blue sofa is prettier. —Yes, but the grey one fits better in the living room. —True; on the other hand, the blue one is washable. (informal)
The speakers use però for an immediate obstacle and en canvi to return to a matched comparison between the two sofas. Short pauses keep the disagreement friendly.
—L'expedient compleix els requisits formals. Tanmateix, hi falta l'informe tècnic. —Ho entenc. Ara bé, ens podria confirmar si el podem presentar demà?
—The file meets the formal requirements. Nevertheless, the technical report is missing. —I understand. That said, could you confirm whether we may submit it tomorrow? (formal)
The request maintains vostè agreement in podria. Tanmateix states the counterfact; ara bé frames a polite procedural reservation.
Near-synonym decisions
| If your second move... | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| directly opposes the first inside one sentence | però | it is the unmarked coordinator |
| compares case A with case B | en canvi | it establishes a contrastive axis |
| survives despite a previous fact | tanmateix | it marks formal counterexpectation |
| qualifies a point you have partly accepted | ara bé | it signals an argumentative pivot |
Other standard forms occupy nearby territory. No obstant això is a formal alternative to tanmateix. Al contrari contradicts and reverses a proposition, so it is stronger than simple comparison. Regional: Balearic and literary usage may include emperò; it is legitimate in its settings, not a defective version of però and not a neutral pan-regional choice for every learner text.
Repairing an interaction
—El pla és barat. En canvi, no funcionarà. Tanmateix, però, l'hem d'aprovar avui. —Vols dir que hi estàs a favor o en contra?
—The plan is cheap. In contrast, it will not work. Nevertheless, but, we must approve it today. —Do you mean you're for it or against it? (stacked and logically unclear)
En canvi has no explicit comparison partner, while tanmateix and però compete for one relation. The repair gives each turn one move and makes the reservation explicit.
—El pla és barat, però no resoldrà el problema. —D'acord. Ara bé, si l'hem de votar avui, podem demanar que consti aquesta reserva?
—The plan is cheap, but it will not solve the problem. —All right. That said, if we have to vote on it today, can we ask for that reservation to be recorded?
The first però links the local opposition. After acknowledgment, ara bé pauses before a new procedural question. This sequence sounds cooperative because timing and turn design reveal the relationship between the two moves.
Regional and multilingual perspective
Però, en canvi, tanmateix, and ara bé belong to the shared standard, although their conversational frequency differs across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speech. Valencian formal prose also uses no obstant això productively; individual regional preferences should be labeled, not ranked. Spanish pero can cause the missing accent in però, and direct translation of sin embargo may produce a Spanish insertion instead of Catalan tanmateix or no obstant això. English “on the other hand” often tempts learners to use en canvi without a genuine pair.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting the accent under Spanish influence.
❌ Vindria, pero avui surto massa tard de la feina.
Incorrect spelling: Catalan però carries a grave accent.
✅ Vindria, però avui surto massa tard de la feina.
I would come, but I finish work too late today.
2. Using en canvi without two comparable cases.
❌ Plovia molt. En canvi, vam continuar caminant.
Awkward for the intended counterexpectation: no second contrasting case is supplied.
✅ Plovia molt. Tanmateix, vam continuar caminant.
It was raining heavily. Nevertheless, we kept walking. (formal)
3. Importing a Spanish connector.
❌ Les dades són incompletes; sin embargo, ja podem detectar la tendència.
Incorrect: sin embargo is Spanish, not Catalan.
✅ Les dades són incompletes; tanmateix, ja podem detectar la tendència.
The data are incomplete; nevertheless, we can already detect the trend.
4. Stacking two contrast markers for one relation.
❌ Tanmateix, però, el termini no canviarà.
Redundant: both markers introduce the same counterpoint.
✅ Tanmateix, el termini no canviarà.
Nevertheless, the deadline will not change. (formal)
5. Switching forms of address in a contrasting request.
❌ Entenc què diu; ara bé, explica'm aquest càlcul.
Incorrect in one consistent exchange: diu is vostè, while explica'm is tu.
✅ Entenc què diu; ara bé, expliqui'm aquest càlcul.
I understand what you're saying; that said, explain this calculation to me. (vostè throughout)
Key Takeaways
Choose però for immediate opposition, en canvi for a comparison between aligned cases, tanmateix for formal counterexpectation, and ara bé for a deliberate reservation after partial agreement. Use punctuation to show each marker's scope, and use prosody, mitigation, and consistent address to shape its social force. One precise contrast marker is clearer than a stack of impressive-looking ones; the formal conjunctions page expands the written inventory.
