Punctuation with Discourse Markers

Punctuation does not belong to a discourse marker as if it were part of its spelling. It represents the marker's syntactic integration, scope, and prosodic detachment in a particular sentence. Initial tanmateix usually introduces a whole proposition and is followed by a comma; integrated també normally takes none; parenthetical per tant needs punctuation on both sides.

This is why “put a comma after every connector” fails. The writer must decide whether the expression is outside the clause as a guide to the reader, inserted as a comment, or structurally integrated into the clause itself.

The marker's meaning still comes first: compare the functions on the contrast-marker page before deciding how visibly to detach one in writing.

The three main placements

PlacementTypical patternExample typeProsody
initial and detachedMarker, clause.Tanmateix, ...short pause after marker
medial parentheticalClause, marker, continuation.La mesura, per tant, ...marker forms its own intonation group
integratedno automatic commasTambé vindrà; Ho farem desprésmarker shares the clause's rhythm

Tanmateix, les dades encara no permeten descartar aquesta hipòtesi.

Nevertheless, the data still do not allow this hypothesis to be ruled out. (formal)

Les dades, tanmateix, encara no permeten descartar aquesta hipòtesi.

The data, nevertheless, still do not allow this hypothesis to be ruled out. (formal, parenthetical)

Les dades també confirmen una diferència entre els dos grups.

The data also confirm a difference between the two groups.

The first two examples express similar logic but organize attention differently. Initial tanmateix announces the counterpoint before the proposition begins. Medial tanmateix interrupts the clause and receives contrastive rhetorical weight. També is an additive adverb inside the predicate, so commas would falsely detach it.

💡
Read the sentence aloud. If the marker is a separate instruction to the listener—“interpret what follows as a contrast/result/reformulation”—a pause and punctuation are likely. If it directly modifies the verb or focused phrase, integration is more likely.

Initial markers and the comma

Sentence-level connectors such as per tant, en canvi, tanmateix, en conseqüència, ara bé, en resum, and és a dir commonly take a following comma when they open a sentence or independent clause. The comma closes the framing expression before the proposition begins.

El termini ja ha vençut. Per tant, caldrà presentar una nova sol·licitud.

The deadline has already expired. Therefore, a new application will have to be submitted.

La primera proposta redueix el cost. En canvi, la segona ofereix més garanties.

The first proposal reduces the cost. By contrast, the second offers more safeguards.

Not every initial adverb is detached. In Després vindrà la part més delicada, després is tightly integrated as a temporal adverb and no pause is required. In Després, parlarem del pressupost, the comma encourages a sequencing-marker reading: “as the next discourse step.” Both are grammatical; punctuation signals the intended packaging.

Després de dinar anirem a veure l'àvia.

After lunch we'll go and see Grandma. (integrated time phrase)

Després, mirarem si encara queda temps per visitar el museu.

Then, we'll see whether there is still time to visit the museum. (detached sequence marker)

Short coordinating conjunctions behave differently. I, o, però, and sinó are not normally followed by a comma merely because they come before a clause. A comma may precede però between substantial clauses; an inserted parenthetical immediately after it can create però, de fet, ..., where the commas belong to de fet.

Parenthetical markers need a pair

A medial detached marker has two boundaries. If the sentence continues after it, use paired commas, paired dashes, or parentheses according to the strength of the interruption. One comma alone wrongly attaches the marker to only one side.

La resolució, en conseqüència, no es publicarà fins dilluns.

The decision, consequently, will not be published until Monday. (formal)

El canvi —dit sigui de passada— també afectarà els contractes temporals.

The change—incidentally—will also affect temporary contracts. (formal aside)

Commas give a light parenthesis. Dashes make the interruption more prominent; parentheses background it. Do not vary among them merely for decoration. In speech, paired commas correspond to lower prominence or brief pauses around the marker, whereas dashes suggest a more audible break.

If the marker falls at the end, only its opening boundary remains: No hi havia cap alternativa viable, en definitiva. This final placement often sounds reflective or emphatic. It is less neutral than initial En definitiva, no hi havia....

No podem ajornar la decisió indefinidament, al capdavall.

We cannot postpone the decision indefinitely, after all.

Semicolons separate; commas detach

A semicolon can separate two independent clauses that are closely connected, especially when the clauses already contain commas. A sentence-level marker after the semicolon still takes its own following comma.

La majoria de participants valoren la flexibilitat de l'horari; tanmateix, els qui viuen lluny demanen una franja més estable.

Most participants value the flexibility of the timetable; nevertheless, those who live far away ask for a more stable time slot. (formal)

The semicolon does one job: it separates complete but related clauses. The comma does another: it detaches tanmateix from the second clause. A comma alone before tanmateix would create a comma splice between two independent clauses in careful prose.

💡
The sequence ; tanmateix, is not “double punctuation.” The semicolon marks the clause boundary; the comma marks the connector's right boundary.

A colon announces an explanation, consequence, list, or reformulation promised by the preceding clause. Do not add a connector that merely duplicates that announced relation.

Només hi ha una sortida realista: ajornar la inauguració fins que acabin les obres.

There is only one realistic solution: postpone the opening until the building work is finished.

Per tant: after a colon is possible in special enumerative layouts, but in running prose Per tant, ajornarem... or a bare colon is normally cleaner.

Scope changes with position

Moving a marker can change what it applies to. A parenthetical near one constituent may create local focus; an initial marker more readily scopes over the whole proposition.

En realitat, la Clara només havia acceptat revisar el primer capítol.

In fact, Clara had only agreed to review the first chapter.

La Clara havia acceptat, en realitat, revisar només el primer capítol.

Clara had in fact agreed to review only the first chapter.

These can describe the same facts, but the second creates a correction inside an established claim. In speech, a pause before en realitat can signal a tactful repair; heavy stress may instead sound accusatory. Punctuation records detachment, not politeness by itself.

Direct and softened versions

No: aquest càlcul és incorrecte. Per tant, refaci'l.

No: this calculation is wrong. Therefore, redo it. (direct, vostè)

Hi ha una diferència entre els dos resultats. Per tant, potser convindria revisar el càlcul abans de continuar.

There is a difference between the two results. Therefore, it might be advisable to review the calculation before continuing. (softened)

The full stop and detached per tant make the inference explicit in both versions. Mitigation comes from impersonal hi ha, potser, and the conditional convindria. Removing a comma cannot by itself make the request polite.

Informal and formal exchanges

—Aleshores, quedem a les vuit? —Bé... millor a dos quarts de nou; abans no hi arribo.

—So, shall we meet at eight? —Well... better at half past eight; I can't get there before then. (informal)

The comma after aleshores marks a turn-opening inference. The ellipsis after bé represents hesitation and a lengthened pause, not simply three decorative dots. The semicolon separates the revised proposal from its explanation.

—L'informe és complet; tanmateix, hi hem detectat dues incongruències. —En aquest cas, ens podria indicar, si us plau, quins apartats hem de revisar?

—The report is complete; nevertheless, we have detected two inconsistencies. —In that case, could you please indicate which sections we need to review? (formal)

The formal exchange maintains vostè in podria. Si us plau is parenthetical and therefore enclosed by commas. The semicolon gives the counterpoint more internal cohesion than a full stop without compressing two clauses into one.

The connector and its commas do not determine the form of address. Once Em podria indicar...? establishes vostè, a continuation such as i revisa aquest apartat would wrongly switch to the tu imperative; use i revisi aquest apartat instead.

Near-synonym and punctuation decisions

Intended moveNatural shapeWhy
neutral additive focusTambé ho revisarem.també is integrated
add a new propositionA més, ho revisarem.a més frames the whole clause
local oppositionHo revisarem, però no avui.però joins the contrasted parts
formal counterpointTanmateix, no ho revisarem avui.the marker is detached and sentence-scoping

The table is not a list of mandatory templates. Writers may choose medial placement for information structure, but then punctuation must follow the new structure.

Repairing an interaction

—Doncs tanmateix, bé, no acceptarem, per tant la proposta. —Això és un no definitiu o encara ho voleu discutir?

—So nevertheless, well, we will not accept, therefore the proposal. —Is that a definitive no, or do you still want to discuss it? (stacked and badly punctuated)

The markers compete, and the comma splits acceptarem from its object. A natural repair gives each move one explicit relation:

—Bé, encara tenim dubtes sobre el cost. Per tant, avui no podem acceptar la proposta. —Entesos; en podem tornar a parlar divendres?

—Well, we still have doubts about the cost. Therefore, we cannot accept the proposal today. —Understood; can we discuss it again on Friday?

The pause after bé buys a moment and softens the turn. Per tant then presents a consequence. In conversation the exact pause length matters: an extended bé... may forecast disagreement before the words do.

Regional perspective

Edited punctuation conventions are broadly shared in IEC- and AVL-oriented writing. Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speech may differ in preferred markers, tempo, and pause placement, but regional intonation does not justify random commas. Transcription can represent audible detachment; ordinary prose represents syntactic and discourse structure rather than every breath. A marker frequent in one variety should keep its natural prosody instead of being forced into the rhythm of another.

English punctuation is not a safe word-for-word template. English often writes initial “however” with a comma, but English “so” may appear without one in informal prose; Catalan per tant remains a detached connector. Conversely, English school rules that demand a comma after every introductory phrase can cause needless commas after integrated Catalan adverbs.

Correction task

Punctuate this formal sentence: La primera opció és més barata tanmateix no inclou el manteniment la segona en canvi cobreix totes les reparacions. There are three complete information units and two detached markers.

La primera opció és més barata; tanmateix, no inclou el manteniment. La segona, en canvi, cobreix totes les reparacions.

The first option is cheaper; nevertheless, it does not include maintenance. The second, by contrast, covers all repairs. (one clear solution)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding a comma after every initial adverb.

❌ També, anunciarem les beques al web municipal.

Incorrect in the neutral additive reading: integrated també does not take this comma.

✅ També anunciarem les beques al web municipal.

We will also announce the scholarships on the municipal website.

2. Giving a parenthetical marker only one comma.

❌ La proposta, per tant queda ajornada.

Incorrect: medial parenthetical per tant needs a closing comma.

✅ La proposta, per tant, queda ajornada.

The proposal, therefore, has been postponed.

3. Separating the verb from its object.

❌ També hem revisat, els annexos tècnics.

Incorrect: no comma belongs between revisat and its direct object.

✅ També hem revisat els annexos tècnics.

We have also reviewed the technical appendices.

4. Joining full clauses with only a comma and a sentence adverb.

❌ El local és accessible, tanmateix, l'ascensor no funciona.

Faulty in careful prose: commas alone do not adequately separate the two independent clauses.

✅ El local és accessible; tanmateix, l'ascensor no funciona.

The premises are accessible; nevertheless, the lift is not working. (formal)

5. Stacking formal markers.

❌ Per tant, en conseqüència, s'arxivarà l'expedient.

Redundant: both markers express the same consequence.

✅ En conseqüència, s'arxivarà l'expedient.

Consequently, the case file will be closed. (formal)

Key Takeaways

Punctuate the structure, not the dictionary entry. Detached initial markers usually take a following comma; medial parentheticals need two boundaries; integrated adverbs take no automatic comma. Use a semicolon or full stop between complete clauses, then punctuate the connector inside the second unit. Finally, listen for scope: punctuation can show where a marker applies, while wording, relationship, and intonation determine whether the move sounds cooperative, hesitant, or confrontational.
