Spoken versus Written Grammar

Spoken and written Catalan are not simply “bad” and “good” versions of one system. Conversation is built turn by turn, with a shared situation, intonation, gesture, repetition, and immediate repair. Prose must guide an absent reader without those resources. The central editing question is therefore not “Which words sound more formal?” but “Can this reader recover the agency, reference, and logical path?”

This page uses contemporary Central Catalan as its main spoken baseline. Features explicitly labeled (regional: Central Catalan) should not be projected onto Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese speech. The written standard is pluricentric: an editor should preserve consistent, valid regional forms rather than erase them.

Medium is not the same as formality

A council speech is spoken but (formal); a message to a sibling is written but (informal). Medium concerns how language is produced and received. Register concerns the relationship, purpose, and genre. A well-written chat may contain fragments, while a carefully planned lecture may have explicit signposting.

—Les claus? Damunt la taula, al costat del pa.

—The keys? On the table, next to the bread. (informal spoken fragments supported by the shared situation)

Les claus són damunt la taula, al costat del pa.

The keys are on the table, next to the bread. (self-contained neutral prose)

The fragment is not defective: the question supplies its missing structure. In a report read without that exchange, the complete sentence is more recoverable. Conversely, making every conversational turn syntactically complete can sound stiff.

How speech packages information

Conversation often places a topic outside the core clause and resumes it with a weak pronoun. This dislocation lets the speaker name what the turn is about before adding new information.

Aquest informe, encara no l'he acabat; demà te'l passo.

This report, I haven't finished it yet; I'll send it to you tomorrow. (informal spoken topic dislocation)

In edited prose, the same information usually fits a direct subject–verb–object sequence: Encara no he acabat aquest informe; te'l passaré demà. The spoken order is grammatical, however, and may be retained in an interview when it reveals emphasis or voice.

Speech also uses repetition to hold the floor or repair planning:

Vam arribar tard perquè, perquè el tren es va aturar abans de Girona.

We arrived late because, because the train stopped before Girona. (natural spoken self-repair)

The written revision deletes the abandoned start: Vam arribar tard perquè el tren es va aturar abans de Girona. Do not “correct” a transcript silently if hesitation itself matters to the research or characterization.

Rapid speech may neutralize difficult weak-pronoun combinations. In (informal, regional: Central Catalan) usage, els hi is often heard with several meanings. Formal edited Catalan keeps the distinctions when they are recoverable:

Els ho donaré demà, quan tinguem la reunió.

I will give it to them tomorrow, when we have the meeting. (standard: els = to them, ho = it)

Els donaré els certificats demà, quan tinguem la reunió.

I will give them the certificates tomorrow, when we have the meeting. (plain lexical alternative that avoids an opaque pronoun cluster)

The second version shows a useful editing principle: formal writing need not display the densest possible pronoun combination. Repeating a noun can be clearer.

Reference: what the page cannot point at

Speech can rely on això, allà, ell, and aquest because interlocutors see the same room and remember the active topic. A document needs stable antecedents. Replace a deictic expression only when the written context would otherwise leave it unresolved.

Això ho deixes allà i després ja ho mirem.

You leave this over there and then we'll look at it. (informal spoken deixis; meaningful in the room)

Deixa la capsa al taulell de recepció; després en comprovarem el contingut.

Leave the box at the reception desk; afterwards we will check its contents. (written version with explicit reference)

Written reference does not require bureaucratic substitutes such as el mateix. Natural repetition, a pronoun with a clear antecedent, or a precise noun phrase is normally better. See reference chains.

Connectors and sentence architecture

Conversation commonly links clauses with i, però, perquè, doncs, bé, and pauses. Writing can use subordination and paragraphing to state relations explicitly, but one accurate connector is better than four prestigious ones.

Bé, vam mirar les dades i no quadraven, i llavors vam tornar a fer el càlcul.

Well, we looked at the data and they didn't add up, and then we did the calculation again. (natural planned or semi-planned speech)

Com que les dades no quadraven, vam repetir el càlcul.

Since the data did not add up, we repeated the calculation. (concise written causal structure)

Punctuation replaces only part of what intonation does. A full stop can separate two claims; a colon can announce an explanation; a semicolon can balance related independent clauses. Commas should not reproduce every spoken pause.

💡
First identify the relation—cause, contrast, sequence, example, or reformulation. Then choose syntax, punctuation, or a connector. Formality is not measured by connector count.

A complete speech-to-prose revision

Spoken version (informal):

Mira, això de les activitats, hi ha famílies que, clar, a la tarda no poden, i llavors el que dèiem, potser fer-ne alguna dissabte, no?

Look, about the activities, there are families who, of course, can't make it in the afternoon, and so, as we were saying, maybe hold one on Saturday, right?

Neutral written version:

Algunes famílies no poden assistir a les activitats de tarda. Per això proposem programar-ne alguna en dissabte.

Some families cannot attend the afternoon activities. We therefore propose scheduling one on a Saturday.

The revision removes the attention-getter mira, the shared-reference phrase això de, the parenthetical clar, the abandoned relative clause, the appeal tag no?, and the vague source el que dèiem. It also names the agent through first-person plural proposem. Nothing has been made better merely by replacing short words with long ones; the gain comes from information flow.

Formal institutional alternative: Atès que algunes famílies no poden assistir a les activitats de tarda, proposem programar-ne una en dissabte. This is appropriate in a proposal, but the plain version above is often easier for the public. Atès que is (formal), not inherently more correct than com que or two sentences.

An annotated paragraph

La biblioteca ampliarà l'horari durant els exàmens. La mesura respon a l'augment d'usuaris observat al vespre; tanmateix, no afectarà el servei de préstec, que mantindrà l'horari habitual.

The library will extend its opening hours during exams. The measure responds to the increase in users observed in the evening; however, it will not affect the lending service, which will retain its usual hours. (neutral-formal written paragraph)

  • La biblioteca names the agent immediately.
  • La mesura resumes the whole first sentence without an unclear això.
  • The semicolon and tanmateix mark one genuine counterpoint.
  • que has an adjacent antecedent, el servei de préstec.
  • The paragraph does not use a passive or an abstract noun merely to sound official.

Regional consistency and editorial restraint

Written Catalan has more than one normative center. A Valencian text may consistently use este, meua, servix or AVL-preferred inflectional choices where appropriate; Balearic prose may reflect valid insular forms. A general editor should correct inconsistency and nonstandard forms, not convert every valid regional marker to Central Catalan. In quoted speech, local features may also be essential evidence.

Esta vesprada presentarem la proposta al veïnat.

This afternoon we will present the proposal to local residents. (standard Valencian; do not mechanically centralize it)

For a broad audience, define unfamiliar regional vocabulary when comprehension requires it. That is audience design, not linguistic purification.

💡
Edit for the document's reader, but preserve the speaker's voice when the voice itself is evidence, characterization, or the object of analysis.

Correction Practice

Edit these lines for a public written notice.

  1. Bé, això, que al final ho farem allà dimarts. One clear revision is: La reunió es farà dimarts a la sala d'actes.
  2. D'una banda, així mateix, però, hi ha menys places. Keep the real relation: Tanmateix, aquest curs hi ha menys places.
  3. Els hi enviarem quan arribin. If els means “to the applicants” and the thing is the results: Els enviarem els resultats quan arribin or Els els enviarem quan arribin. The lexical version is clearer.

Common Mistakes

⚠️ En relació amb la realització de la reunió, es procedirà a efectuar-la divendres.

Grammatical but needlessly nominal and impersonal — long words do not create good formal prose.

✅ La reunió es farà divendres.

The meeting will take place on Friday. (plain, neutral written Catalan)

⚠️ L'informe va ser finalitzat per l'equip i va ser enviat per la coordinadora.

Possible, but modeled on repeated English passives; agency and rhythm are heavy.

✅ L'equip va acabar l'informe i la coordinadora el va enviar.

The team finished the report and the coordinator sent it. (clear active agency)

❌ Benvolguda senyora, t'adjunto el document que vau demanar.

The object pronoun and finite verb cannot consistently address the same single recipient: t' selects tu, whereas vau selects vós or a plural addressee.

✅ Benvolguda senyora, li adjunto el document que va demanar.

Dear Madam, I attach the document you requested. (consistent vostè address)

⚠️ Per tant, així doncs, en conseqüència, anul·lem la sessió.

Grammatical, but three consequence markers overload one simple relation.

✅ Per tant, anul·lem la sessió.

Therefore, we are cancelling the session.

⚠️ L'editor va substituir esta vesprada per aquesta tarda perquè la primera forma no era catalana.

The sentence is grammatical, but it reports a false diagnosis: the original is standard Valencian, not non-Catalan.

✅ L'editor va mantenir esta vesprada perquè el text seguia coherentment l'estàndard valencià.

The editor kept esta vesprada because the text consistently followed the Valencian standard.

Key Takeaways

  • Speech uses shared context, fragments, dislocation, repetition, intonation, and real-time repair; prose must make its reference and relations recoverable on the page.
  • Editing means redesigning information for an absent reader, not making every word longer.
  • Prefer visible agency and natural verbs over copied English passives and chains of nominalizations.
  • Keep one address system and one coherent regional model.
  • Preserve valid spoken and regional features when genre, voice, or evidence requires them.
