Adding: A Més, També, Fins i Tot, and Així Mateix

Catalan does not have one undifferentiated word for “also.” També adds a parallel participant or action, a més adds a new reason or proposition, fins i tot marks the addition as surprising, and així mateix links parallel points in formal prose. Choosing among them means deciding both what is being added and how the speaker evaluates it.

Position can guide scope, but it does not determine it by itself. Both També vindrà la Laia and La Laia també vindrà can mean “Laia will come too”; context and intonation reveal whether the parallel concerns Laia, the act of coming, or another part of the message.

Four additions, four signals

These are not stylistic decorations. Removing fins i tot erases surprise; replacing també with a més can shift from a parallel action to a new argumentative point.

També and the focus of “too”

També usually precedes the verb phrase: també hi vindré, també ho sap, també podem esperar. With a weak-pronoun cluster, it comes before the pronouns and verb. In spontaneous speech it can appear at the end, with a separate intonation group: Jo hi vindré, també. That final position is informal and often adds an afterthought.

The unmarked reading adds explaining to another expected action or adds tomorrow's event to the discourse. Stress can narrow the scope: DEMÀ també t'ho explicaré contrasts tomorrow with another day. Because t'ho consists of unstressed weak pronouns, make the person contrast explicit instead of stressing the clitics: A tu també t'ho explicaré (“I'll explain it to you too”).

This can mean that Berta joins other people who booked, or that booking joins Berta's other actions. Context and stress resolve the difference. If ambiguity matters, make the parallel explicit: La Berta, com en Pau, ha reservat taula.

A més adds another point

Sentence-initial a més, has scope over the following proposition and normally takes a comma. It is especially useful for adding a reason in recommendations, explanations, and disagreements.

A més a més is an emphatic, often conversational expansion. Use it when the accumulation itself matters; repeating it throughout a formal text becomes mannered.

The marker may strengthen a demand. Compare a direct addition with a mitigated one:

The difference comes from si pot ser and the conditional m'aniria bé, not from a més. A falling tone after avui closes the request; a gentler rise can leave room for negotiation.

Fins i tot adds an unexpected extreme

Fins i tot corresponds to scalar “even”: the focused item is less expected than the alternatives already under discussion. Put it next to its scope when two readings are possible.

The first surprises us about who tasted it; the second surprises us about what Neus did. Speech places the strongest stress on Neus or preparar accordingly. Fins i tot is not temporal fins “until,” although both contain fins.

Així mateix belongs to structured prose

Així mateix is written as two words and commonly introduces a parallel institutional, journalistic, or academic point. It is not wrong in speech, but it can sound scripted in an ordinary chat. Igualment can also mean “likewise,” while in conversation it frequently returns a wish: Bon cap de setmana! —Igualment!

Do not confuse additive així mateix with reflexive a si mateix (“to himself/itself”) or manner així (“in this way”). Their accents, spacing, and functions differ.

Informal and formal exchanges

The first marker adds a participant to the outing; the second adds a separate offer. The light rise after germana signals that the turn is not finished.

Both speakers maintain vostè: hi trobarà, podria. The second speaker places també next to the requested addition, els annexos.

Near-synonym contrasts

Markers can occasionally co-occur when their scopes differ: A més, la Joana també hi vindrà adds a new proposition to the discourse, while també places Joana alongside another attendee. Stacking them without two distinct jobs is redundant.

Repairing an interaction

Three markers compete without an established scale or list. The listener cannot tell whether the certificate is an ordinary addition or a surprising requirement. A natural repair names the first item and uses one marker for the second.

The pause around a més and the explicit first item make the addition recoverable. Si us plau mitigates the imperative but does not change its tu agreement.

Regional perspective

A més, també, and fins i tot are shared standard forms across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese Catalan. Frequency, turn placement, and emphatic alternatives vary. The contact form ademés occurs in speech in some areas, but edited IEC and AVL usage normally prefers a més. That is a register recommendation, not permission to dismiss a speaker's whole regional variety. Així mateix is broadly formal rather than specifically Central.
