De Tota Manera and En Qualsevol Cas | Catalan Grammar

De tota manera and en qualsevol cas often translate English anyway or in any case, yet they make different reasoning visible. De tota manera typically overrides a difficulty or concession: the preceding point is true, but it does not change the speaker's decision or conclusion. En qualsevol cas emphasizes that the next claim holds under every relevant option or remains the safest conclusion while facts are unsettled.

Neither expression is a meaningless filler. Each links two stretches of discourse. If English anyway merely abandons one topic and starts another, Catalan may need bé, tornant al tema... or another topic-management formula instead.

The difference is one of focus, not truth conditions alone. The first speaker brushes past a counterweight; the second surveys alternatives and extracts a stable consequence.

De tota manera: concession that does not alter the outcome

The most common pattern is possible objection + de tota manera + maintained decision. English often uses anyway, still, or all the same.

El trajecte és una mica més llarg, però, de tota manera, arribarem abans de les nou.

The journey is a little longer, but we'll arrive before nine anyway.

No sé si la Laia podrà venir. Jo reservaré quatre places, de tota manera.

I don't know whether Laia will be able to come. I'll book four places anyway. (sentence-final afterthought)

The sentence-final position often sounds like a decision added after considering the complication. Initial position foregrounds the argumentative pivot. In the middle of a clause, two commas mark the expression as parenthetical: La reunió, de tota manera, no començarà abans de les sis.

The plural form de totes maneres is also standard and widely used. A course or institution may prefer one form for stylistic consistency, but the choice is not a contrast in meaning. Do not alternate them mechanically within a short formal text merely to create superficial variety.

No m'han confirmat l'hora. De totes maneres, ja seré al despatx a les vuit.

They haven't confirmed the time. In any event, I'll already be at the office at eight. (standard plural variant)

En qualsevol cas: a conclusion stable across possibilities

En qualsevol cas is useful when evidence is incomplete, scenarios differ, or the writer wants to formulate a minimum conclusion. It tells the reader that the proposition survives every case currently under discussion.

És possible que el retard provingui del proveïdor. En qualsevol cas, l'empresa haurà d'informar els clients.

The delay may originate with the supplier. In any case, the company will have to inform its customers. (formal consequence)

No sabem si arribarà dimarts o dimecres; en qualsevol cas, t'avisarem tan bon punt sigui aquí.

We don't know whether it will arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday; in either case, we'll let you know as soon as it's here.

It can also introduce a prudent fallback without asserting that every scenario is identical:

Potser el document ja és al vostre correu brossa. En qualsevol cas, us el torno a adjuntar.

The document may already be in your spam folder. In any case, I am attaching it again. (formal and helpful)

The alternative en tot cas can perform a similar limiting or fallback function in careful usage, while sigui com sigui means “be that as it may/regardless.” These are near-synonyms, not ornaments to stack together.

Use en qualsevol cas when you could mentally insert “whether A or B.” Use de tota manera when you could insert “despite that objection.” This diagnostic captures the usual contrast better than memorizing one English translation.

English anyway has several jobs

English uses one word for relations that Catalan normally distinguishes. Before translating, identify the move.

Ha endreçat els cables de qualsevol manera i ara ningú no sap quin és quin.

He arranged the cables any old way, and now nobody knows which is which. (manner, not discourse-marker 'anyway')

The distinction between de tota manera and de qualsevol manera is especially important. The latter can be grammatical, but it often describes how an action is performed and can imply disorder or lack of care. It is therefore a risky automatic translation of discourse-marker anyway.

Because de tota manera explicitly sets a prior point aside, it can sound as though the speaker has ignored an objection. Adding acknowledgment and a reason makes the same decision more collaborative.

De tota manera, ho farem com jo dic.

Anyway, we'll do it my way. (direct and potentially dismissive)

Entenc que et preocupi el termini; de tota manera, proposo mantenir el pla perquè ja tenim l'equip confirmat.

I understand that the deadline worries you; even so, I suggest keeping the plan because the team is already confirmed. (softened and reasoned)

In formal interaction, en qualsevol cas often sounds calmer because it focuses on the decision's validity rather than dismissing the interlocutor's concern.

—Podria revisar també l'annex, senyora Prat? —En qualsevol cas, li enviaré avui el document principal; l'annex l'hi faré arribar demà.

—Could you also review the appendix, Ms Prat? —In any case, I will send you the main document today; I will send you the appendix tomorrow. (formal, consistent vostè address)

An informal exchange can be much lighter:

—Potser el bar està tancat avui. —De tota manera, anem-hi; si no, anem al de la plaça.

—Maybe the bar is closed today. —Let's go there anyway; if it is, we'll go to the one in the square. (informal)

Near-synonyms: contrast is not the same as persistence

Tanmateix and no obstant això mark contrast: the next proposition pulls against the previous one. De tota manera adds the idea that the prior point does not alter a decision or conclusion. En fi closes a stretch of talk. Sigui com sigui explicitly refuses to let uncertain details affect what follows.

La proposta és ambiciosa; tanmateix, el pressupost és insuficient.

The proposal is ambitious; however, the budget is insufficient. (contrast, not necessarily a maintained decision)

No queda clar qui va autoritzar la despesa. Sigui com sigui, caldrà justificar-la.

It is not clear who authorized the expenditure. Be that as it may, it will have to be justified. (formal concession over uncertain facts)

Tanmateix tells the reader that two propositions contrast. De tota manera tells the listener that the first proposition will not change the chosen course. Ask whether persistence is part of your meaning.

Avoid the bureaucratic impulse to pile them up: Tanmateix, en qualsevol cas, de tota manera... forces the reader to choose among competing relations. One precise connector is stronger.

Repairing an interaction

A speaker may realize that de tota manera sounded like a refusal to listen. Natural repair explicitly restores the relevance of the other person's point:

—El canvi ens obligarà a refer tota la maqueta. —De tota manera, l'aplicarem. —Així sembla que no t'importi el que he dit. —Tens raó; m'he expressat malament. El cost importa, però crec que el canvi és necessari. Mirem com podem reduir la feina?

—The change will force us to redo the whole layout. —We'll apply it anyway. —That makes it sound as though you don't care what I said. —You're right; I expressed myself badly. The cost matters, but I think the change is necessary. Shall we see how we can reduce the work? (natural repair)

Prosody reinforces the relation. A sharp de tota manera after an interruption can dismiss. A short pause before it, acknowledgment beforehand, and steady falling intonation make a reasoned pivot. A deliberate en qualsevol cas in a presentation signals that the speaker is extracting the common consequence of several scenarios.

Usage frequency and conversational rhythm vary across Catalan-speaking regions. De tota manera, de totes maneres, and en qualsevol cas belong to contemporary standard Catalan; no single region's preference should be presented as the universal conversational norm.

Revise each line before reading the suggested answer.

De qualsevol manera, presentaré la sol·licitud avui. If the intended meaning is “despite the difficulty,” write: De tota manera, presentaré la sol·licitud avui.
No sabem quina de les dues dates triaran. En fi, prepararem les dues sales. Mark a result stable across alternatives: En qualsevol cas, prepararem les dues sales.

Missing comma and mixed address — envia'm is tu, while pugui and doctora Serra frame vostè.

In any case, send me the report when you can, Dr Serra. (formal address and punctuation)

❌ De tota manera, què has fet aquest cap de setmana?

Abrupt if no concessive link exists — this English-style anyway merely changes topic.

✅ Bé, canviant de tema, què has fet aquest cap de setmana?

Anyway, changing the subject, what did you do this weekend?

❌ No sabem si vindrà en tren o en cotxe. En fi, l'esperarem a l'estació.

Wrong relation — en fi closes a topic, but the action here is supposed to hold across transport possibilities and is logically inconsistent with one of them.

✅ No sabem si vindrà avui o demà. En qualsevol cas, li guardarem l'habitació.

We do not know whether she will come today or tomorrow. In either case, we will keep the room for her.
