Periphrastic Past versus Imperfect

The periphrastic past (vaig parlar) presents a past situation as a bounded whole; the imperfect (parlava) presents it from inside, without asserting its beginning or endpoint. This is an aspectual contrast—a choice of viewpoint—not a mechanical division between short and long actions.

English simple past can translate both forms, while English progressive can often translate the imperfect. Translation alone therefore cannot choose the Catalan tense. You must decide whether the clause advances the timeline as a completed event or describes the background, routine, or state in which events occur.

The contrast at a glance

Narrative roleforeground; next eventbackground; scene or circumstance

Typical Englishdid, went, sawwas doing, used to, would; also did

The periphrastic past is built with vaig, vas, va, vam, vau, van + infinitive. Person and number appear on the auxiliary. The imperfect uses endings such as -ava or -ia: parlava, perdia, dormia. In both tenses, the finite element agrees with the subject.

If either pattern is unfamiliar, review Periphrastic Past Formation and Uses of the Imperfect before applying the contrast below.

Ahir vaig treballar fins a les set.

Yesterday I worked until seven.

Quan vivia a Lleida, treballava des de casa.

When I lived in Lleida, I worked from home.

The first sentence closes yesterday's work period. The second places the listener inside a period of life; neither the beginning nor the end of the work arrangement is asserted.

💡
Imagine two camera positions. The periphrastic past stands outside the event and sees its boundaries; the imperfect places the camera inside the situation. Real-world duration does not determine where the camera goes.

Foreground events against background

Narratives typically combine the two tenses. The imperfect establishes the setting already in force; the periphrastic past introduces the event that moves the story forward.

Plovia, el carrer era buit i jo esperava sota un balcó quan va arribar el taxi.

It was raining, the street was empty, and I was waiting under a balcony when the taxi arrived.

La gent parlava fluix; de sobte, algú va apagar els llums.

People were speaking quietly; suddenly, someone turned off the lights.

The imperfects answer “what was the scene like?” The periphrastic forms answer “what happened next?” A word such as de sobte strongly favors a foreground event, but it is not the fundamental rule: aspect comes from how the speaker packages the event.

Sequence also matters. A chain of periphrastic forms produces successive narrative steps:

Va obrir el correu, va llegir el missatge i em va trucar immediatament.

She opened the email, read the message, and called me immediately.

Replacing all three with imperfects would turn the steps into overlapping or habitual background and would no longer tell the same story.

Boundaries are not the same as brevity

A long situation can be perfective when its interval is closed. A momentary mental state can be imperfect when it is viewed from inside.

Vam viure a Brussel·les durant dotze anys i després vam tornar a Catalunya.

We lived in Brussels for twelve years and then returned to Catalonia.

En aquell moment no entenia què em demanaven.

At that moment I didn't understand what they were asking me.

The twelve-year residence has explicit boundaries and is presented as one completed chapter. The moment of not understanding is open internally: the clause describes the speaker's state at that reference point.

Compare the same residence from two viewpoints:

Vivíem a Brussel·les quan va néixer la nostra filla.

We were living in Brussels when our daughter was born.

Hi vam viure del 2011 al 2023.

We lived there from 2011 to 2023.

The facts may be identical. The first sentence backgrounds the residence relative to the birth; the second closes it between two dates.

Counts, habits, and bounded series

The periphrastic past counts completed occurrences. The imperfect describes a recurring pattern without counting its members.

Ahir em va trucar quatre vegades.

Yesterday she called me four times.

Abans em trucava cada vespre.

She used to call me every evening.

Durant aquell curs vam fer pràctiques cada divendres.

During that course we did practical training every Friday.

The last sentence is crucial: cada divendres does not automatically require the imperfect. Durant aquell curs supplies a closed outer boundary, so the speaker can summarize the whole repeated series as completed. If the purpose were to evoke the routine from inside, Durant aquell curs fèiem pràctiques cada divendres would also be possible. The tense changes the discourse viewpoint, not necessarily the external facts.

💡
For repetition, ask two questions: “Am I counting or closing the series?” favors the periphrastic past; “Am I describing what normally happened?” favors the imperfect.

States can use either tense

State verbs are common in the imperfect because states naturally provide background: sabia, coneixia, volia, podia, tenia. A perfective form can bound the state or trigger a change-of-state interpretation.

Imperfect statePerfective event or bounded state
Ho sabia. — I knew it.Ho vaig saber ahir. — I found out yesterday.
Coneixia la directora. — I knew the director.Vaig conèixer la directora. — I met the director.
No podia obrir la porta. — I couldn't / wasn't able to open it.No vaig poder obrir la porta. — I couldn't get the door open.
Era el director. — He was the director, as background.Va ser director tres anys. — He served as director for three years.

These shifts are not arbitrary vocabulary substitutions. Perfective viewpoint places boundaries around a state; with verbs such as saber and conèixer, the left boundary is naturally understood as entering the state—hence “find out” or “meet.” The exact interpretation still depends on context.

Volia parlar amb ella, però al final no vaig poder.

I wanted to speak with her, but in the end I couldn't.

Volia gives the desire already present; no vaig poder reports the completed outcome of the attempt.

Interruption and the progressive

The simple imperfect already handles an ongoing background activity:

Llegia quan vas entrar.

I was reading when you came in.

Estava llegint quan vas entrar is also correct, but it zooms in more explicitly on the activity in progress. English progressive wording does not force the Catalan progressive. First choose imperfect versus perfective viewpoint; then decide whether the imperfect activity deserves extra progressive focus.

By contrast, va estar llegint tota la tarda bounds the reading as a completed afternoon-long stretch. This is a periphrastic past of estar plus gerund, not an imperfect progressive.

Weak pronouns and polarity

Pronoun placement follows the structure selected; it does not choose the aspect. Before an ordinary imperfect, the pronoun is preverbal: la veia, no ho sabia. With the periphrastic past, it can precede the auxiliary or attach to the infinitive.

La veia cada matí, però ahir no la vaig veure.

I used to see her every morning, but yesterday I didn't see her.

Les claus, les buscava pertot arreu i al final vaig trobar-les a la butxaca.

I was looking everywhere for the keys, and in the end I found them in my pocket.

Les buscava provides the ongoing search; vaig trobar-les supplies the bounded resolution. Colloquial speech often prefers preverbal les vaig trobar, which has the same aspectual meaning.

A practical decision path

  1. Is the clause a completed event, outcome, count, or closed interval? Use the periphrastic past: vam arribar, va durar dues hores, hi vaig anar tres cops.
  2. Is it a habit, description, state, simultaneous circumstance, or activity already in progress? Use the imperfect: arribàvem tard sovint, durava massa, hi anava cada setmana.
  3. Could both perspectives fit? Choose the role in this discourse. A closed summary favors the periphrastic past; scene-setting from inside favors the imperfect.
  4. Does English say “was doing”? Do not decide yet. The simple Catalan imperfect may be sufficient; add estar + gerund only when ongoingness itself is foregrounded.

Mini-dialogue

—Què va passar quan vau arribar? —La porta era oberta i sonava música, però no hi havia ningú. Vam entrar, vam apagar l'equip i vam trucar al propietari.

—What happened when you arrived? —The door was open and music was playing, but nobody was there. We went in, switched off the sound system, and called the owner.

The question and the three final verbs request and deliver foreground events. Era, sonava, and hi havia pause the timeline to describe the scene discovered on arrival.

Regional and register notes

The periphrastic past is the unmarked spoken perfective past across most of the language area. The synthetic simple past—parlí, parlares, parlà, parlàrem, parlàreu, parlaren—has essentially the same perfective role and remains conversational in parts of the Valencian and Balearic domains (regional: parts of Valencia, Mallorca, and Ibiza). It is also common in historical and elevated narrative (formal / literary). The contrast on this page is therefore between perfective and imperfective viewpoint, whether the perfective form is va parlar or regional/literary parlà.

Expanded auxiliaries vares, vàrem, vàreu, and varen are standard regional alternatives. Vam arribar and vàrem arribar have the same aspect. Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese varieties differ in form and tense distribution at other edges of the past system, but none turns the imperfect into a simple synonym of the perfective past.

Both tenses here are indicative and normally assert their situations. In Quan vam arribar, plovia, both arrival and rain are presented as facts with different viewpoints. In Volia que arribessis abans que plogués, the desired arrival and projected rain are nonasserted, so the imperfect subjunctive appears. Never select mood from quan or que alone.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the imperfect for one completed foreground event.

❌ Ahir arribava tard i perdia el tren.

Wrong viewpoint for two completed events in yesterday's sequence.

✅ Ahir vaig arribar tard i vaig perdre el tren.

Yesterday I arrived late and missed the train.

2. Assuming a long duration requires the imperfect.

❌ Vivia a Roma durant deu anys i després va tornar.

Incorrect for a closed ten-year interval followed by a return.

✅ Va viure a Roma durant deu anys i després va tornar.

She lived in Rome for ten years and then returned.

3. Treating every repeated action as a habit.

❌ Ahir m'enviava sis missatges.

Wrong viewpoint for six counted, completed messages.

✅ Ahir em va enviar sis missatges.

Yesterday she sent me six messages.

4. Copying the English progressive automatically.

❌ Quan vivíem al poble, estàvem anant a peu a l'escola.

Awkward as a neutral habitual routine.

✅ Quan vivíem al poble, anàvem a peu a l'escola.

When we lived in the village, we walked to school.

5. Adding a to the completed past.

❌ Ahir vam a visitar els avis.

Incorrect — a changes the construction; the periphrastic past takes a bare infinitive.

✅ Ahir vam visitar els avis.

Yesterday we visited our grandparents.

Key Takeaways

Choose vaig parlar when you present an event, outcome, count, or interval as bounded and complete. Choose parlava when you enter a past scene and describe its habits, states, or ongoing circumstances. A situation's objective length and its English translation do not decide the tense; narrative viewpoint does.
