The Catalan subjunctive does not primarily say that an event is uncertain. It presents a situation without independently asserting it: as wanted, evaluated, rejected, purpose-driven, future-contingent, or one possibility among alternatives. The subordinate situation is interpreted through another expression rather than offered as a standalone update to the conversation.
This explains a fact that the slogan “subjunctive equals doubt” cannot: M'alegra que siguis aquí uses the subjunctive even when your presence is obvious. The speaker is not doubting that you are here; the clause is packaged as the object of an emotional evaluation.
After learning this organizing idea, use the broader indicative-or-subjunctive decision guide to compare constructions and the subjunctive-tense guide to place them in time.
Assertion versus dependency
Compare a direct commitment with a dependent representation:
Sé que la Laia treballa des de casa.
I know Laia works from home.
Vull que la Laia treballi des de casa demà.
I want Laia to work from home tomorrow.
In the first sentence, la Laia treballa des de casa is presented as information the speaker endorses. In the second, the event exists inside a wish. The speaker is committed to having the wish, not to the desired event already being real. Indicative treballa therefore contrasts with subjunctive treballi.
This idea is called nonassertion, but it does not mean “untrue.” A subjunctive clause may describe a known fact:
Em molesta que deixis els plats a l'aigüera cada nit.
It annoys me that you leave the dishes in the sink every night.
The repeated behavior is taken for granted. Nevertheless, the clause is presented as what provokes annoyance, not as the sentence's main assertion. Factive emotion and evaluation are central evidence that subjunctive is broader than uncertainty.
The main nonassertive environments
The exact constructions have their own pages, but they share an underlying organization.
| Environment | How the situation is framed | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wish or influence | desired, requested, allowed, prevented | Vull que vinguis. |
| Emotion or evaluation | evaluated rather than newly asserted | M'agrada que hi siguis. |
| Doubt, denial, rejection | commitment is withheld or rejected | No crec que funcioni. |
| Purpose | goal, not an established result | T'ho escric perquè ho recordis. |
| Pending time | future event treated as not yet realized | Truca'm quan arribis. |
| Indefinite reference | one possible entity, not an identified one | Busco algú que en sàpiga. |
Necessitem que ens confirmeu l'hora abans de divendres.
We need you all to confirm the time before Friday.
Tanco la finestra perquè no entri tant de soroll.
I'm closing the window so that so much noise doesn't come in.
Quan arribin els convidats, traurem el sopar.
When the guests arrive, we'll bring out dinner.
Busquem una persona que conegui bé el programa.
We're looking for someone who knows the software well.
These are not interchangeable “trigger lists.” Que occurs in both moods, and even the same larger expression can change interpretation. Entenc que estàs cansat normally asserts an understood fact; No entenc que estiguis tan cansat evaluates or questions the state. Meaning selects mood.
Uncertainty is neither necessary nor sufficient
Subjunctive is not necessary for uncertainty. The adverb potser normally combines with the indicative in contemporary standard Catalan:
Potser demà plourà.
Maybe it will rain tomorrow.
The future is uncertain, yet plourà is indicative. By contrast, the construction és possible que places the proposition inside an impersonal evaluation and selects subjunctive:
És possible que demà plogui.
It may rain tomorrow.
Subjunctive is also not proof of doubt, as M'alegra que hagis vingut shows. The mood signals how a clause is integrated into discourse; lexical meanings such as certainty and probability contribute, but no English keyword can calculate the result automatically.
A compact formation map
For regular Central Catalan -ar verbs, remove -ar and add -i, -is, -i, -em, -eu, -in. Other conjugations and many frequent verbs have additional stem patterns.
| Person | parlar | Stress |
|---|---|---|
| jo | parli | stem |
| tu | parlis | stem |
| ell / ella / vostè | parli | stem |
| nosaltres | parlem | ending |
| vosaltres | parleu | ending |
| ells / elles / vostès | parlin | stem |
The ending encodes person and number, so Catalan normally omits subject pronouns. Parli can correspond to jo, ell, ella, or vostè; context resolves the overlap. Parlem and parleu are identical to the regular present indicative, so only syntax and meaning reveal the mood: Parlem cada dia asserts a habit, while Vol que parlem demà represents a requested event.
Spelling still follows Catalan sound rules: tocar → toqui, pagar → pagui, començar → comenci, canviar → canviï. Irregular forms include sigui, tingui, pugui, faci, and vagi. Formation is necessary, but it comes after the semantic choice.
Time and viewpoint: “present” does not mean now
The present subjunctive is temporally relative. With a present main clause, it can overlap with the present or point forward:
Em sorprèn que encara dormis.
I'm surprised you're still asleep.
Espero que dormis bé aquesta nit.
I hope you sleep well tonight.
For an event completed before the relevant present viewpoint, Catalan uses the perfect subjunctive: M'alegra que hagis dormit bé. A past main viewpoint normally shifts to the imperfect subjunctive: Esperava que dormissis bé. English often hides these contrasts, so choose through temporal ordering and assertion status, not word-for-word translation.
This same logic prevents two common aspect confusions. English “I hope you're coming tomorrow” usually needs simple Espero que vinguis demà, not progressive estiguis venint. Catalan periphrastic past is va venir, without a; va a venir has the different structure anar a + infinitive. Neither surface English wording nor the presence of va predicts subjunctive tense.
Weak pronouns and polarity
In an ordinary subordinate clause, weak pronouns precede the finite subjunctive, and no precedes the pronoun cluster:
Vull que m'ho expliqueu amb calma.
I want you all to explain it to me calmly.
Dubto que no se n'adonin de seguida.
I doubt they won't notice it straight away.
Negative commands also use present-subjunctive forms: No m'ho expliquis ara. Affirmative commands attach pronouns: Explica-m'ho. Mood, polarity, and clitic position interact, but they are not the same decision.
Regional and register notes
This page uses the general -i paradigm with Central Catalan as its baseline. (regional: Valencian) standard first-conjugation forms have -e/-es—parle, parles, parle, parlem, parleu, parlen—and second- and third-conjugation forms commonly have -a/-es. These are normative regional forms with the same mood meanings.
Subjunctive is not inherently (formal). Vull que vinguis and no ho facis are ordinary informal speech. What may be formal is a particular selecting expression: s'exigeix que presenteu la documentació (formal). Regional form and register should not be confused.
Mini-dialogue: deciding whether to wait
—La Núria diu que ve cap a les vuit. —Doncs espero que no arribi gaire tard.
—Núria says she's coming around eight. —Well, I hope she doesn't arrive too late.
—Vols que l'esperem? —Sí; encara que trigui una mica, soparem tots junts.
—Do you want us to wait for her? —Yes; even if she takes a while, we'll all have dinner together.
Diu que ve reports a plan as asserted. Espero que no arribi, vols que l'esperem, and encara que trigui place situations inside hope, desire, and a concession whose realization does not change the decision.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating subjunctive as a synonym for uncertainty.
❌ Potser vingui demà.
Nonstandard in the usual general pattern—potser normally takes indicative.
✅ Potser vindrà demà.
Maybe she'll come tomorrow.
2. Using subjunctive after every que.
❌ Sé que el tren arribi a les nou.
Incorrect—the speaker asserts the arrival time as known.
✅ Sé que el tren arriba a les nou.
I know the train arrives at nine.
3. Copying an English object-plus-infinitive structure.
❌ Vull tu venir abans.
Incorrect—different subjects require a finite que-clause.
✅ Vull que vinguis abans.
I want you to come earlier.
4. Overusing the progressive.
❌ Espero que estiguis arribant a les vuit.
Unnatural for a simple expected arrival.
✅ Espero que arribis a les vuit.
I hope you arrive at eight.
5. Copying a Spanish obligation periphrasis.
❌ No vull que tinguis que treballar diumenge.
Incorrect—standard Catalan uses haver de, not tenir que, for this obligation.
✅ No vull que hagis de treballar diumenge.
I don't want you to have to work on Sunday.
