Impersonal Se

Catalan can background a human agent with es + a third-person singular verb: Aquí es treballa de valent means that people work hard here, without identifying any particular workers. English moves among “people,” generic “you,” “one,” “they,” and the passive; Catalan packages the same perspective into an impersonal clause with no grammatical subject.

The construction looks like the pronominal passive, but its syntax is different. Impersonal es keeps the verb singular and leaves the agent human but implicit; passive es promotes a patient to subject and therefore allows agreement. That contrast, not the English translation, is the reliable guide.

Form and the shape of the pronoun

Used alone before a consonant, the marker is es; before a vowel, it elides to s'. Before another weak pronoun, it normally takes the full form se: se'n parla, se li va dir, se'ls va avisar. The finite verb is third-person singular because the clause has no overt subject controlling agreement.

Time or moodModel with treballarTypical meaning
presentes treballapeople work / one works
imperfectes treballavapeople used to work
periphrastic pastes va treballarpeople worked on a bounded occasion
present perfects'ha treballatpeople have worked
futurees treballaràpeople will work
conditionales treballariapeople would work
present subjunctivees treballithat people work
imperfect subjunctivees treballésthat people worked / were to work

A la cooperativa es treballa amb horaris flexibles.

At the cooperative, people work flexible hours.

Abans s'entrava per la porta del darrere, però ara està tancada.

People used to enter through the back door, but it is closed now.

Diumenge no es va treballar perquè hi havia una avaria elèctrica.

No work was done on Sunday because there was a power outage.

The periphrastic past is es va treballar, with va as a past auxiliary. It is not the movement construction anar a + infinitive: the latter would be va anar a treballar, “he or she went to work.” Likewise, English “people are working on a solution” does not automatically require a Catalan progressive; neutral es treballa en una solució is often enough.

What kind of agent remains implicit?

The construction normally implies human, intentional participants: residents, staff, customers, researchers, or people in general. With an intransitive verb, the analysis is particularly clear because there is no patient that could become a passive subject.

En aquest poble es viu amb molta calma fins que arriba l'agost.

In this village, life is very calm until August arrives.

Per aquest camí s'arriba al refugi en menys d'una hora.

You can reach the shelter along this path in under an hour.

Durant la reunió es va parlar sobretot del pressupost de l'any vinent.

During the meeting, people mainly discussed next year's budget.

The agent cannot normally be restored with an agent phrase such as per l'equip. If naming the agent matters, use an active clause (l'equip va parlar del pressupost) or, where appropriate, a true passive. Impersonal es is chosen precisely because the participants are generic, recoverable, or irrelevant.

💡
Test the construction with an intransitive verb such as viure, arribar, or treballar. If the sentence remains natural, the singular verb cannot be agreeing with a patient: the clause is genuinely impersonal.

Transitive verbs and the agreement boundary

With a transitive verb, an ordinary unmarked patient noun phrase normally produces a pronominal passive in general standard Catalan. The patient is then the subject and controls agreement. This is an important limit on the singular impersonal pattern.

Es van seleccionar els tres candidats abans de dinar.

The three candidates were selected before lunch.

No es poden deixar els menors sols en aquesta sala.

Minors cannot be left alone in this room.

Here els tres candidats and els menors are plural patient-subjects, so the verbs are plural. Singular nonagreement with a postverbal noun phrase—es va entrevistar els candidats, es pot obrir les finestres—is an established (regional: Northwestern) pattern and is acceptable in communication tied to that variety, but it is not the safest pan-regional formal model. Catalan does use a with some human direct objects, especially strong personal pronouns and certain potentially ambiguous orders; do not add it mechanically from Spanish merely to force an impersonal analysis.

When the object is replaced by a weak pronoun, its object status becomes visible:

Els testimonis esperaven al passadís i se'ls va fer entrar d'un en un.

The witnesses were waiting in the corridor, and they were brought in one by one.

A la portaveu, se li va preguntar si dimitiria, però no va respondre.

The spokesperson was asked whether she would resign, but she did not answer.

In se'ls va fer entrar, se is the impersonal marker and els is the retained object. In se li va preguntar, li marks the recipient of the question. These clusters precede a finite verb, including the auxiliary of a periphrastic past. With an infinitive or gerund, normal placement alternatives apply: no es pot obligar ningú a quedar-s'hi.

Impersonal or pronominal passive?

Compare these structures:

ConstructionExampleAgreement logic
impersonal esAquí es treballa molt.no subject; third-person singular default
impersonal es + object cliticSe'ls va avisar.els remains an object; singular verb
pronominal passiveEs van avisar els veïns.els veïns is the patient-subject; plural agreement

Unmarked patient noun phrases favor the pronominal passive and agreement: es publica una convocatòria / es publiquen dues convocatòries. Human reference can make an impersonal interpretation pragmatically attractive, but it does not suspend the general-standard agreement pattern by itself. Object clitics, indirect objects, intransitive verbs, and regional nonagreement make the impersonal analysis clearer. The full agreement pattern is covered in Pronominal Passive with Es.

Tense, mood, polarity, and register

Impersonality does not determine tense or mood. The indicative presents the activity as asserted; the subjunctive appears only when the larger clause places it under a requirement, possibility, evaluation, or other nonassertive frame.

Convé que es parli amb totes les parts abans de publicar l'informe.

It is advisable for all parties to be spoken to before the report is published.

No crec que aquí es treballés així fa vint anys.

I don't think people worked this way here twenty years ago.

Negation simply precedes the clitic: no es diu, no se'n parla, no s'hi entrarà. Do not select the subjunctive merely because the impersonal verb is negative; in Aquí no es fuma, the ban is asserted and the indicative is correct.

Impersonal es is neutral in signs, instructions, explanations, and formal prose, and it is also fully available in conversation. (Formal) prose may prefer it to generic tu because it excludes the writer's and reader's personal voices. (Informal) conversation often alternates with generic tu or an agentless third-person plural. The construction belongs to standard Catalan across regions; what varies more is the frequency of competing strategies, not the core grammar.

💡
Choose mood from the status of the proposition, not from the word es: Aquí no es fuma asserts a rule, while demanen que no es fumi embeds the rule as a request.

Mini-dialogue: a new workplace

—Com es treballa en aquesta oficina: cadascú pel seu compte o per equips?

—How do people work in this office: individually or in teams?

—Normalment es treballa per equips, i els divendres es comparteixen els resultats.

—People normally work in teams, and on Fridays the results are shared.

—I si hi ha un problema? —Se'n parla a la reunió del matí.

—And if there is a problem? —It gets discussed at the morning meeting.

The first and third clauses are impersonal; es comparteixen els resultats is naturally passive because els resultats controls plural agreement. A short exchange can therefore contain both constructions without contradiction.

Common Mistakes

1. Making an impersonal intransitive verb plural.

❌ En aquesta biblioteca es treballen en silenci.

Incorrect — treballar is intransitive here, so there is no plural subject.

✅ En aquesta biblioteca es treballa en silenci.

People work in silence in this library.

2. Leaving a definite preverbal patient with a singular verb.

❌ Les finestres es pot obrir ara.

Incorrect — an anteposed definite patient controls plural agreement in every standard variety.

✅ Les finestres es poden obrir ara.

The windows can be opened now.

3. Confusing the impersonal periphrastic past with movement.

❌ Ahir es va a treballar amb les finestres obertes.

Incorrect for a completed past event — va a is being treated as a future-like periphrasis.

✅ Ahir es va treballar amb les finestres obertes.

Yesterday people worked with the windows open.

4. Choosing the subjunctive merely because the rule is negative.

❌ En aquest laboratori no es mengi ni es begui.

Incorrect as a direct statement of the laboratory rule.

✅ En aquest laboratori no es menja ni es beu.

People do not eat or drink in this laboratory.

Key Takeaways

  • Impersonal es suppresses a generic or irrelevant human agent and takes a third-person singular verb.
  • Its surface forms are es, s', and—in clusters—se: es treballa, s'entra, se'n parla.
  • In the general standard, an unmarked patient noun phrase normally forms a pronominal passive and controls agreement.
  • Singular nonagreement with a postverbal patient noun phrase is established in Northwestern Catalan but is regionally marked.
  • Tense and mood still express viewpoint and assertion: impersonality alone never selects the subjunctive.
