The Catalan ser passive promotes the patient of a transitive event to grammatical subject: active El jurat va seleccionar tres projectes becomes passive Tres projectes van ser seleccionats pel jurat. The finite auxiliary ser carries tense and mood, the participle agrees with the new subject, and an optional agent is introduced by per. The form resembles the English be-passive, but Catalan uses it much more selectively because active and se constructions are usually lighter.
From active clause to passive clause
The transformation changes grammatical relations without changing the core participants:
| Role | Active | Ser passive |
|---|---|---|
| agent | subject: el jurat | optional per phrase: pel jurat |
| patient | direct object: tres projectes | subject: tres projectes |
| verb | va seleccionar | van ser seleccionats |
El jurat va seleccionar tres projectes d'habitatge social.
The jury selected three social-housing projects.
Tres projectes d'habitatge social van ser seleccionats pel jurat.
Three social-housing projects were selected by the jury.
The passive is justified when the projects are already the discourse topic, when the author wishes to keep agents in the background, or when a long agent phrase works better after the verb. It is not automatically more objective.
Agreement: two moving parts
Ser agrees in person and number with the passive subject. The participle agrees with that subject in gender and number. A complete present model with publicar shows both mechanisms:
| Subject | Present passive |
|---|---|
| jo (masculine / feminine) | soc publicat / publicada |
| tu (masculine / feminine) | ets publicat / publicada |
| ell / ella / vostè | és publicat / és publicada |
| nosaltres (masculine / feminine) | som publicats / publicades |
| vosaltres (masculine / feminine) | sou publicats / publicades |
| ells / elles / vostès | són publicats / són publicades |
First- and second-person passives are grammatically possible, as the table shows, but inanimate third-person subjects dominate actual use. Forms such as vaig ser informat occur especially in (formal) testimony; ordinary conversation prefers em van informar.
Les autores seran informades del veredicte abans de les sis.
The authors will be informed of the verdict before six.
La peça ha estat cedida temporalment per un museu de Tolosa.
The piece has been lent temporarily by a museum in Toulouse.
In the compound form ha estat cedida, estat is the invariable participle used to build the perfect of ser; cedida is the passive participle and agrees with la peça. This two-part structure often causes agreement mistakes.
Tense and aspect belong to ser
Any finite tense or mood of ser can anchor a passive event. The following model is not a full conjugation of ser; it shows how viewpoint changes around one third-person patient.
| Form | Passive model | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| present | l'arxiu és consultat | habitual or procedural |
| periphrastic past | l'arxiu va ser consultat | bounded past event |
| imperfect | l'arxiu era consultat | habitual/background past |
| present perfect | l'arxiu ha estat consultat | earlier event relevant now |
| future | l'arxiu serà consultat | later passive event |
| conditional | l'arxiu seria consultat | hypothetical or future-in-past |
| present subjunctive | que l'arxiu sigui consultat | nonasserted passive event |
Abans de digitalitzar-lo, el manuscrit era consultat només amb autorització especial.
Before it was digitized, the manuscript was consulted only with special permission.
És imprescindible que totes les mostres siguin etiquetades abans del trasllat.
It is essential that all the samples be labeled before the move.
The subjunctive comes from the nonassertive requirement introduced by és imprescindible que, not from passive voice itself. Selecting mood mechanically from the presence of a participle gives the wrong analysis.
Present passives and ongoing events
The simple present passive often describes repeated processes, institutional procedures, or general facts. It is less natural for a single event happening at this instant.
Les actes són aprovades al començament de la sessió següent.
The minutes are approved at the beginning of the following session.
For an unfolding event, contemporary Catalan has estar sent + participle, but this can become heavy and is often encouraged by English or Spanish models. Prefer an active or passive-se construction when it expresses the same focus cleanly: Els tècnics estan comprovant les dades or S'estan comprovant les dades. Use està sent comprovat only when both progressive aspect and patient focus are genuinely relevant.
The agent phrase with per
An expressed agent is introduced by per, contracted as pel, pels before the definite article: per la directora, pel comitè, pels serveis jurídics. It identifies an actor or cause responsible for the event.
La descoberta va ser anunciada per l'equip de recerca en una roda de premsa.
The discovery was announced by the research team at a press conference.
Diversos camins van ser malmesos per les pluges torrencials.
Several paths were damaged by the torrential rain.
Do not copy Spanish por. Catalan per covers the agent phrase. An instrument or manner is not automatically an agent: El text va ser escrit a mà, not per mà; La peça va ser tallada amb làser identifies an instrument.
Information structure: why choose this passive?
Catalan often places old or accessible information first and new, heavier information later. The ser passive helps maintain a patient as topic while postponing a newsworthy agent.
El retaule, documentat ja al segle XV, va ser restaurat entre 2019 i 2021 per un equip especialitzat en pintura gòtica.
The altarpiece, already documented in the fifteenth century, was restored between 2019 and 2021 by a team specializing in Gothic painting.
Here el retaule continues the topic and the long agent phrase arrives naturally at the end. In conversation with no established patient topic, the active Un equip especialitzat va restaurar el retaule would normally be simpler.
The agentless passive is common in (formal) administrative, academic, legal, and journalistic genres: La hipòtesi va ser descartada. Yet if no agent is expressed and no topic chain requires the patient first, a passive se construction is often more idiomatic: Es va descartar la hipòtesi.
Restrictions and awkward passives
Only a direct object can straightforwardly become the subject of this passive. Indirect-object and experiencer patterns do not passivize as English speakers may expect. Catalan says Em van donar una beca, not Jo vaig ser donat una beca; A la Laia li agrada el jazz, not El jazz és agradat per la Laia.
Stative possession and many cognition expressions also resist literal English passives. L'empresa té l'edifici does not naturally become L'edifici és tingut per l'empresa. Some lexicalized formal phrases exist—és considerat expert, és coneguda per tothom—but they must not be generalized to every verb.
La proposta és considerada viable per la majoria dels assessors.
The proposal is considered viable by most of the advisers.
This sentence works because considerar + object + predicative supports a conventional passive reading in formal prose.
Weak pronouns in passive clauses
The patient is now the subject, so a neutral passive does not repeat it with a direct-object clitic. Other complements can survive. A retained indirect object may appear before the auxiliary in (formal) language:
A la cooperativa li va ser concedit un ajut per renovar la maquinària.
The cooperative was granted aid to renew its machinery.
This pattern is grammatical but bureaucratic. La cooperativa va rebre un ajut or Van concedir un ajut a la cooperativa is usually better outside formal documents. The clitic li is an indirect object; un ajut is the passive subject and controls singular va ser concedit.
Ser passive versus resultant estar
Do not confuse the eventive passive with a state. Els accessos van ser bloquejats a mitjanit identifies a blocking event. Els accessos estaven bloquejats a mitjanit reports their condition then, perhaps without saying when or by whom they were blocked. The full contrast appears in ser or estar plus participle.
Mini-dialogue
—Per què no surt encara l'informe? —Ha estat revisat pels auditors, però falta l'autorització final.
—Why hasn't the report been released yet? —It has been reviewed by the auditors, but final authorization is still missing.
—Quan serà publicat? —Tan bon punt sigui signat per la presidenta.
—When will it be published? —As soon as it is signed by the chairwoman.
The first passive keeps l'informe as the implicit topic. The future-time tan bon punt clause uses subjunctive sigui because signing has not yet occurred.
Regional and register notes
The construction and agreement pattern are standard throughout Catalan. Regional standards supply their ordinary local forms of ser and of the subjunctive; the voice system itself is shared. Frequency is mainly a matter of genre, not territory. Extended ser passives are characteristic of (formal), administrative, academic, and journalistic writing. In (informal) speech, active clauses, unspecified third-person plurals, and se passives are generally preferred.
Common Mistakes
❌ Els resultats va ser publicat ahir.
Incorrect — both the auxiliary and the participle must agree with the plural subject.
✅ Els resultats van ser publicats ahir al vespre.
The results were published yesterday evening.
❌ L'exposició va ser inaugurada por l'alcaldessa.
Incorrect Spanish preposition — Catalan introduces a passive agent with per.
✅ L'exposició va ser inaugurada per l'alcaldessa.
The exhibition was opened by the mayor.
❌ Jo vaig ser donat una beca de recerca.
Incorrect English-style indirect-object passive — a scholarship, not the recipient, is the direct-object patient.
✅ Em van concedir una beca de recerca.
I was awarded a research grant.
❌ El meu ordinador està sent reparat cada tardor.
Awkward progressive for a habitual event.
✅ El meu ordinador és revisat cada tardor pel servei tècnic.
My computer is checked every autumn by technical support.
❌ Les dades les van ser verificades dues vegades.
Incorrect neutral passive — the promoted patient is a subject, not a doubled direct object.
✅ Les dades van ser verificades dues vegades.
The data were verified twice.
Key Takeaways
- Build the passive with patient subject + ser + agreeing participle + optional per agent.
- Ser locates the event in tense and mood; the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.
- Choose the construction to maintain or foreground a patient, especially when the agent is new, long, or deliberately backgrounded.
- Catalan uses the ser passive mainly in formal genres and prefers active, third-person plural, or se alternatives in ordinary speech.
- Avoid English-style indirect-object passives and automatic estar sent translations.
