Ser or Estar plus Participle

In ser + participle, Catalan presents an event that affects a patient: La carretera va ser tallada a les sis “The road was closed at six.” In estar + participle, it presents the resulting condition: La carretera estava tallada a les sis “The road was closed at six.” English uses be + participle for both, so the same English surface form can conceal two different Catalan viewpoints.

Event versus resultant state

The most reliable distinction is not “temporary versus permanent.” Ask whether the sentence is telling you that an action took place or describing the condition that held at the reference time.

ConstructionWhat it profilesNatural question
ser + participlethe passive eventWhat happened, when, and by whom?
estar + participlethe resulting stateWhat condition was something in?

La sala va ser netejada després de l'acte.

The hall was cleaned after the event. (the cleaning took place afterward)

Quan hi vam entrar, la sala ja estava neta i ordenada.

When we went in, the hall was already clean and tidy. (its condition then)

Les comportes seran obertes a les vuit per l'equip de manteniment.

The gates will be opened at eight by the maintenance team.

A les nou, les comportes encara estaran obertes.

At nine, the gates will still be open.

Both constructions can refer to short or long situations. A state may last seconds (la porta està oberta un moment) or centuries (el jaciment està sepultat des de l'antiguitat). Duration alone does not choose the copula; event versus state does.

💡
Try adding “take place” to the paraphrase. If “the opening took place at eight” preserves the intended meaning, choose eventive ser. If “was in an open state” is the point, choose estar.

Formation and agreement

The finite copula carries tense, mood, person, and number. The participle agrees in gender and number with the grammatical subject in both constructions.

SubjectPassive eventResultant state
el documentva ser signatestà signat
la còpiava ser signadaestà signada
els documentsvan ser signatsestan signats
les còpiesvan ser signadesestan signades

This differs from compound tenses with haver, where the participle is normally invariable: Hem signat les còpies. In Les còpies han estat signades, however, estat belongs to the compound auxiliary and stays invariable, while signades is the passive participle and agrees with les còpies.

Les dues candidatures han estat admeses provisionalment.

The two applications have been provisionally accepted.

Les dues candidatures ja estan admeses al sistema.

The two applications are already recorded as accepted in the system.

Irregular participles retain their irregular stem before adding agreement: escrit/escrita/escrits/escrites; obert/oberta; resolt/resolta; admès/admesa. Review forming past participles when the stem itself is uncertain.

Tense chooses the viewpoint time

The copula may appear in the tense or mood required by the discourse. With ser, its tense locates the passive event. With estar, its tense locates the state from which the speaker views the result.

Time or moodser: eventestar: state
presentés revisat cada trimestreestà revisat i llest
periphrastic pastva ser revisat ahirva estar bloquejat dues hores
imperfectera revisat cada dillunsestava bloquejat
futureserà revisat demàestarà llest demà
subjunctiveque sigui revisatque estigui preparat

The present és revisat tends to describe a habitual procedure, not an action unfolding right now. For an ongoing passive event, s'està revisant is often more natural than està sent revisat, especially in unmarked prose. The latter is possible when progressive eventivity truly matters, but overusing it copies the English progressive too closely.

El protocol és revisat cada any per una comissió independent.

The protocol is reviewed every year by an independent committee.

Ara mateix s'està revisant el protocol; encara no està aprovat.

The protocol is being reviewed right now; it has not yet been approved.

Agent phrases belong to the event

An explicit agent of a ser passive is normally introduced by per: per la comissió, pel jurat, pels tècnics. The agent identifies who carried out the event.

L'informe va ser redactat per dues investigadores de la universitat.

The report was drafted by two university researchers.

An ordinary resultative estar clause does not need an agent because its purpose is to describe a state. La finestra està oberta pel conserge is awkward if it means “the caretaker opened it”; use La finestra ha estat oberta pel conserge for the event, or simply El conserge ha obert la finestra. A following per phrase with estar may instead be interpreted as a reason or purpose, so forcing an agent into the state construction creates ambiguity.

💡
An agent phrase is strong evidence for eventive ser, but the absence of an agent does not force estar. La sessió va ser ajornada is still an eventive passive even when nobody names the organizer.

Adjective tests for estar + participle

Many resultative participles have become ordinary adjectives. Several diagnostics support an adjectival reading, although no single test is infallible:

  • coordination with a clear adjective: la porta està tancada i rovellada;
  • degree modification where the meaning permits it: una resposta molt treballada;
  • a lasting-state expression: va estar tancada durant dos mesos;
  • replacement by another predicative adjective: està oberta / està disponible.

La proposta està molt treballada, però encara és massa llarga.

The proposal is very thoroughly developed, but it is still too long.

Els accessos van estar tancats durant tota la matinada.

The access points remained closed throughout the night.

Some participles have lexicalized meanings that cannot be calculated from a recent event: estar cansat “be tired,” estar convençut “be convinced,” estar acostumat “be used to.” Treat these as predicative adjectives, not as evidence that a passive event is currently occurring.

Choosing active, passive se, or a copular construction

Catalan often avoids a heavy ser passive when the agent is unknown or irrelevant. It may use an active clause with an unspecified plural subject or a passive se construction.

SentenceDiscourse focus
Els tècnics van reparar l'ascensor.the technicians as agents
L'ascensor va ser reparat pels tècnics.the elevator as patient, but agent retained
Es va reparar l'ascensor.the repair, with no agent foregrounded
L'ascensor ja està reparat.the resulting usable condition

These are not stylistic decorations placed over the same proposition. Each directs attention differently. Formal reports may prefer ser when responsibility matters; conversation usually prefers the active, se, or the result state.

Weak pronouns

The promoted patient of a passive is a subject, so it is not doubled by a direct-object weak pronoun: Les mostres van ser analitzades, not les mostres les van ser analitzades in neutral order. A retained indirect complement may still appear as a clitic in formal constructions: Li va ser concedida una pròrroga. With an adjectival result, ordinary locative or partitive pronouns follow their normal preverbal position: Els arxius hi estan desats; de còpies, n'hi ha tres de preparades.

Mini-dialogue

—Ja podem obrir la sala al públic? —Encara no: ha estat pintada aquest matí i les parets no estan seques.

—Can we open the hall to the public now? —Not yet: it was painted this morning and the walls aren't dry.

—I les sortides d'emergència? —Van ser comprovades pels bombers i ara estan senyalitzades correctament.

—And the emergency exits? —They were checked by the firefighters and are now correctly marked.

The dialogue first mentions completed events, then evaluates the states left by those events.

Regional and register notes

The event–state distinction is shared across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese Catalan. The specific conjugated forms may vary by regional standard, but agreement and viewpoint remain the same. Extended ser passives and progressive estar sent + participle are most frequent in (formal) administrative, academic, and journalistic language; good editing often replaces them with an active or se construction. Resultative estar + participle is neutral in both (informal) and formal use.

Common Mistakes

❌ La porta va ser tancada tota la tarda.

Incorrect for an all-afternoon state — eventive ser does not express the duration of the resulting condition.

✅ La porta va estar tancada tota la tarda.

The door was closed all afternoon.

❌ Les sol·licituds han estat admès.

Incorrect — the passive participle agrees with the feminine plural subject.

✅ Les sol·licituds han estat admeses.

The applications have been accepted.

❌ La incidència està resolta pels tècnics aquest matí.

Incorrect event framing — an agent and a completed time point call for an eventive construction.

✅ La incidència ha estat resolta pels tècnics aquest matí.

The incident was resolved by the technicians this morning.

❌ El contracte està sent signat cada gener.

Unnatural English-style progressive for a habitual procedure.

✅ El conveni anual és signat cada gener pels representants de les dues parts.

The annual agreement is signed every January by representatives of both parties.

❌ Hem estat signades les còpies.

Incorrect — after haver in an active compound tense, the participle is normally invariable.

✅ Hem signat les còpies.

We have signed the copies.

Key Takeaways

  • Ser + participle profiles a passive event; estar + participle profiles the resulting condition.
  • The finite copula carries tense and mood, while the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.
  • An agent introduced by per naturally accompanies an eventive ser passive, not an ordinary result state.
  • Present ser passives are often habitual; use se or an active clause instead of copying every English progressive passive.
  • Catalan chooses among active, ser passive, se passive, and estar resultative according to information structure, not by word-for-word translation.
