Spanish and Catalan share so much vocabulary and structure that a calque can look completely plausible. The revealing detail is often small: a missing en, an automatic personal a, a preposition retained before que, a neutral article lo, or a connector assigned the Spanish meaning of its lookalike.
This page is not an argument that every contact feature is careless speech. Catalan has developed through multilingual contact for centuries, and its regional standards are not defective versions of Central Catalan. A useful correction identifies a precise false analogy, applies a grammatical test, and checks legitimate regional usage before changing anything.
The diagnostic workflow
- Find the construction, not merely the suspicious word: pronoun plus antecedent, verb plus complement, auxiliary plus infinitive, article plus adjective, or connector plus logical relation.
- Reconstruct the full Catalan phrase. Which preposition does the Catalan verb govern? Is the noun a direct object, recipient, source, or topic?
- State the intended relation: cause, consequence, contrast, duration, obligation, or future.
- Compare the nearest Spanish frame only after the Catalan analysis. This exposes the borrowed architecture.
- Test whether the apparent “error” is grammatical with another Catalan meaning.
- Check region and register. A Valencian personal name without an article is not Spanish interference; a missing Central personal article may simply reflect a different standard model.
Pronoun calques: recover Catalan roles
Spanish lacks productive equivalents of Catalan en and hi, and Spanish lo can be a masculine object or a neutral article/pronoun. Catalan distributes those jobs among several forms.
Repair 1 — retain a de-complement with en.
Vam parlar del trasllat, però avui no vull parlar més.
We discussed the move, but today I don't want to talk anymore. (Grammatical general activity; it does not retain the specific topic.)
✅ Vam parlar del trasllat, però avui no en vull parlar més.
We discussed the move, but today I don't want to talk about it anymore.
Without en, the first sentence is grammatical with the more general meaning “I don't want to talk anymore.” Adding en preserves the particular topic. This is the first meaning-changing case.
Repair 2 — retain a destination with hi.
❌ —Encara vas al centre cívic? —Sí, ho vaig cada dijous.
Incorrect — neutral ho cannot replace the destination a/al centre cívic.
✅ —Encara vas al centre cívic? —Sí, hi vaig cada dijous.
—Do you still go to the community center? —Yes, I go there every Thursday.
Repair 3 — neutral content is ho, not lo.
❌ Ja lo sé, que demà tanqueu més d'hora.
Spanish lo has been inserted as a neutral Catalan clitic.
✅ Ja ho sé, que demà tanqueu més d'hora.
I already know that you're closing earlier tomorrow.
Repair 4 — a human direct object is still direct.
❌ Li vaig veure davant del jutjat i el vaig saludar.
Spanish leísmo or role confusion has replaced the masculine direct-object pronoun el with indirect li.
✅ El vaig veure davant del jutjat i el vaig saludar.
I saw him outside the courthouse and greeted him.

Preposition calques: test the Catalan complement
Closely related verbs can select different syntax. Standard Catalan also normally drops a, de, en, amb before a finite clause introduced by que. A Spanish-shaped preposition may survive because every word sounds familiar.
Repair 5 — no preposition before finite que.
❌ Ens hem adonat de que faltava una signatura.
Spanish dequeísmo-like sequence; de is required before a noun but drops before finite que.
✅ Ens hem adonat que faltava una signatura.
We realized that a signature was missing.
Compare Ens hem adonat de l'absència d'una signatura, where de is required before the noun phrase. Mechanical deletion would damage that sentence.
Repair 6 — use the Catalan realization verb.
❌ M'he donat compte de l'errada massa tard.
A direct copy of Spanish darse cuenta de; standard Catalan uses adonar-se de.
✅ M'he adonat de l'errada massa tard.
I realized the mistake too late.
Repair 7 — do not import personal a automatically.
❌ Hem entrevistat a la candidata de Perpinyà aquest matí.
Spanish-style personal a before an ordinary human direct object in the neutral pattern.
✅ Hem entrevistat la candidata de Perpinyà aquest matí.
We interviewed the candidate from Perpignan this morning.
Catalan does use a with certain strong pronouns, dislocations, reciprocal or ambiguous structures, and other licensed contexts. The error is automatic transfer, not the mere sequence a + person.
Periphrastic calques: name the meaning first
Spanish tener que and general future ir a map easily onto Catalan-looking words. The neutral standard instead uses haver de/cal for obligation and a simple present or future for ordinary plans and predictions.
Repair 8 — obligation.
❌ Els tècnics tenen que revisar el quadre elèctric.
The words are Catalan, but the obligation frame copies Spanish tener que.
✅ Els tècnics han de revisar el quadre elèctric.
The technicians have to inspect the electrical panel.
Repair 9 — neutral future.
❌ L'any que ve l'entitat va a obrir una seu a Tortosa.
Unrestricted future anar a copies Spanish ir a.
✅ L'any que ve l'entitat obrirà una seu a Tortosa.
Next year the organization will open an office in Tortosa.
Do not change literal Vaig a obrir la porta when it means “I am going over to open the door,” nor past imminence Anava a obrir-la quan ha sonat el telèfon. The full distinctions appear in Verb-Periphrasis Calques.
Article calques: form and interpretation interact
Spanish neutral lo + adjective is not the standard Catalan neutral-article pattern. Catalan substantivizes the adjective with el or uses allò que when a fuller demonstrative meaning is intended.
Repair 10 — neutral evaluation.
❌ Lo important és que ningú no ha pres mal.
Spanish neutral article lo has been copied.
✅ L'important és que ningú no ha pres mal.
The important thing is that nobody was hurt.
Weekday articles create a subtler trap. A bare weekday normally identifies one upcoming or contextually fixed day; the article readily gives a habitual reading.
Dilluns treballo des de casa.
I'm working from home on Monday. (one contextually identified Monday)
Els dilluns treballo des de casa.
On Mondays I work from home. (habitual reading with the plural article)
The second sentence is not a Spanish-style error; it is grammatical Catalan with another meaning. This second meaning-changing contrast shows why blanket article deletion fails.
Personal articles require regional care. La Núria ja ha arribat is ordinary Central Catalan. Núria ja ha arribat is normal (regional: Valencian) standard usage, not proof of Spanish interference. Balearic na Núria is another legitimate system.
Connector calques: follow the logical arrow
Spanish pues can introduce a cause or a consequence. Catalan doncs is consequential or inferential, not the neutral causal equivalent of perquè/ja que. Ask whether the second clause answers “why?” or “what follows?”
Repair 11 — cause is not doncs.
❌ No agafarem la bicicleta, doncs el camí encara és moll.
Spanish pues has been copied with causal force.
✅ No agafarem la bicicleta, perquè el camí encara és moll.
We won't take the bicycle because the path is still wet.
El camí encara és moll; doncs, no agafarem la bicicleta.
The path is still wet; therefore, we won't take the bicycle.
Here doncs is correct because it points forward to a conclusion.
Repair 12 — des que before a finite clause.
❌ Des de que van canviar l'horari, sempre arribem amb temps.
Spanish desde que has been mapped onto Catalan des de que.
✅ Des que van canviar l'horari, sempre arribem amb temps.
Since they changed the schedule, we always arrive in good time.
Use des de before a noun phrase—des de dilluns, des de la reforma—but des que before a finite clause.
Repair 13 — a mesura que, not a mida que.
❌ A mida que avançava la tarda, la plaça s'anava omplint.
The connector confuses mida ‘size/measurement’ with mesura in the standard expression.
✅ A mesura que avançava la tarda, la plaça s'anava omplint.
As the afternoon wore on, the square gradually filled up.
English transfer versus Spanish contact
English can also cause missing en/hi, broad progressives, and preposition errors. Evidence matters: de que and tenir que point strongly toward a Spanish frame, whereas omitted clitics may come from either language or from regional colloquial usage. Do not diagnose a person's linguistic background from one sentence.
In (formal) pan-regional writing, IEC and AVL models converge on the repairs shown here. Spoken Catalan under contact may use several crossed forms frequently, but frequency and suitability are separate questions. Valencian article usage, Balearic personal articles, Northwestern clitic patterns, Northern contact with French, and Alguerese contact with Italian/Sardinian each deserve their own descriptions; none should be forced into a “Spanish corruption” narrative.
Correction task
Identify the copied relation, then repair it.
- No lo recordo, però vam parlar d'això ahir.
- Confio de que la mediació funcionarà.
- Demà tenim que presentar el pressupost.
- No hi anirem, doncs han tancat la carretera.
Answers: No ho recordo; Confio que la mediació funcionarà; Demà hem de presentar el pressupost; No hi anirem perquè han tancat la carretera.
Common Mistakes
❌ A la Carla li vaig veure sortir del museu.
Automatic personal a and indirect li misanalyse Carla, who is the direct object of veure.
✅ La Carla, la vaig veure sortir del museu.
I saw Carla leave the museum. (Left-dislocated object, resumed by la.)
❌ Des de que visc aquí, no he tornat a conduir.
Before a finite que-clause, use des que.
✅ Des que visc aquí, no he tornat a conduir.
Since I've lived here, I haven't driven again.
❌ Lo millor serà ajornar la visita fins dimarts.
Catalan does not use Spanish neutral lo before the adjective.
✅ El millor serà ajornar la visita fins dimarts.
The best thing will be to postpone the visit until Tuesday.
Key Takeaways
- Reconstruct the Catalan relation before comparing it with Spanish: complement type determines en, hi, ho, el/la, li, and preposition choice.
- Standard Catalan drops a lexical preposition before finite que, but retains it before a noun or infinitive where the construction requires it.
- Haver de/cal, simple future or present, l'important, and causal perquè perform jobs often calqued as tenir que, anar a, lo, and causal doncs.
- A contact diagnosis must never erase genuine Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese grammar.
Final proofreading checklist
- Have you reconstructed every omitted complement and supplied en, hi, or ho where Catalan requires it?
- Is a human noun phrase really indirect, or has Spanish personal a/leísmo distorted its role?
- Has a preposition survived incorrectly before finite que?
- Does the verb use its Catalan complement frame rather than a translated Spanish one?
- Do obligation and future periphrases express their Catalan meaning precisely?
- Does an article mark a one-off reference, a habitual reading, a neutral adjective, or a regional personal-name system?
- Is doncs introducing a consequence rather than a cause?
- Have you checked IEC/AVL and regional evidence before labeling a form a calque?
