Weak-Pronoun Order Errors

Catalan weak pronouns do not form a bag of interchangeable little words. A cluster has an internal order, each member must represent a real grammatical function, and the whole cluster must occupy a position licensed by the verb. English encourages learners to copy “it to me” word by word; Spanish contact can encourage clusters whose order is normal in Spanish but not in Catalan.

This page is an error clinic, not a second presentation of every paradigm. For the full system, begin with ordering two weak pronouns and pronoun placement. Here the goal is to find the false analogy, prove what is wrong, and repair it repeatably.

The diagnostic workflow

Use five questions, always in this order:

  1. What full phrase does each pronoun replace? Write the phrase out: el contracte, a la Joana, de l'armari.
  2. What is its function? Distinguish direct object, recipient, reflexive, partitive or de-complement, and location or other prepositional complement.
  3. What is the Catalan order? Person/reflexive pronouns normally precede third-person objects; definite objects precede hi; en precedes hi.
  4. Where can the cluster stand? It precedes an ordinary finite verb but follows an infinitive, gerund, or affirmative imperative. Many verbal groups allow the entire cluster in either of two positions.
  5. How is that ordered cluster spelled here? Only now choose em/me/m'/'m, place apostrophes as far right as the forms allow, and add postverbal hyphens.
💡
Never repair punctuation first. If the grammatical roles or order are wrong, moving an apostrophe merely produces a neatly spelled impossible cluster.

Common Mistakes

The following ten repairs apply the diagnostic workflow to the most persistent error types.

1. Do not copy English object order

❌ La bibliotecària el me reservarà fins demà.

Incorrect — English ‘reserve it for me’ has suggested direct object + recipient order.

✅ La bibliotecària me'l reservarà fins demà.

The librarian will reserve it for me until tomorrow.

Write out el llibre (direct object) and a mi (recipient). Catalan places first-person me before masculine direct-object el, producing me'l.

2. Keep a reflexive before en

❌ L'Ona en se va adonar massa tard.

Incorrect — the pronominal element se must precede en.

✅ L'Ona se'n va adonar massa tard.

Ona realized it too late.

The verb is adonar-se de. Both pieces survive: se is the reflexive clitic built into the pronominal verb adonar-se, and en replaces the de-complement. The order is se'n, never en se.

3. Put the definite object before hi

❌ La capsa és al prestatge de dalt; hi la tornaré després.

Incorrect — hi cannot precede the definite direct object la in this cluster.

✅ La capsa és al prestatge de dalt; la hi tornaré després.

The box belongs on the top shelf; I'll put it back there later.

The antecedents are la capsa → la and al prestatge de dalt → hi. The direct object precedes the locative: la hi (formal). The common Central pronunciation l'hi can neutralize feminine gender (informal, regional: Central), but hi la is not the repair.

4. Do not preserve li before a definite object in the Central pattern

❌ El rebut, li el donaré quan arribi.

Incorrect in the Central standard pattern — li + el does not remain as two unaltered forms.

✅ El rebut, l'hi donaré quan arribi.

I'll give the receipt to him when he arrives.

In the Central baseline, singular recipient li plus el becomes direct object + hi: el + li → l'hi. (regional: Valencian) li'l donaré is the regular AVL-standard solution and must not be “corrected” to Central order. The hybrid li el belongs to neither pattern.

5. Preserve plural recipient els before ho

❌ Als proveïdors, ho els explicarem per escrit.

Incorrect — the plural recipient precedes neutral direct object ho.

✅ Als proveïdors, els ho explicarem per escrit.

We'll explain it to the suppliers in writing.

The strong phrase als proveïdors is resumed by dative els; the whole proposition is ho. Therefore the cluster is els ho. Generalized els hi is widespread (informal, regional: Central and other areas), but careful (formal) prose keeps els ho when ho is the object.

6. Use the cluster form before another pronoun

❌ La còpia, em la pots enviar abans de dinar?

Incorrect — em changes to the full cluster form me before la.

✅ La còpia, me la pots enviar abans de dinar?

Can you send me the copy before lunch?

Compare single em pots enviar la còpia with clustered me la pots enviar. The contrast em/me is conditioned by the neighboring pronoun; it is not free stylistic variation.

7. Move the apostrophe when the following verb begins with a vowel

❌ El document? Me'l han arxivat a la carpeta equivocada.

Incorrect spelling before vowel-initial han — the rightmost eligible pronoun elides with the verb.

✅ El document? Me l'han arxivat a la carpeta equivocada.

The document? They've filed it in the wrong folder for me.

Before consonant-initial guardaran, write me'l guardaran. Before han, the masculine object leans rightward: me l'han. The grammatical order is unchanged; only the written shapes respond to the next sound.

8. Keep preverbal clusters before a finite verb

❌ Demà enviaré-te-la des de l'oficina.

Incorrect — an unstressed pronoun cannot attach to an ordinary finite indicative form.

✅ Demà te l'enviaré des de l'oficina.

I'll send it to you from the office tomorrow.

Finite enviaré requires proclisis: te l'enviaré. Postverbal attachment belongs to an infinitive (enviar-te-la), a gerund (enviant-te-la), or an affirmative imperative (envia-me-la).

9. Put the whole cluster after an affirmative imperative

❌ Me l'explica amb paraules més senzilles.

Incorrect for a command — preverbal placement turns the form into a statement.

✅ Explica-me'l amb paraules més senzilles.

Explain it to me in simpler words.

Affirmative explica takes the cluster after it. Hyphens attach the verb and syllabic pronoun; the apostrophe joins me + el. By contrast, the negative command is preverbal: No me l'expliquis ara.

10. Do not split a climbing cluster

❌ La notícia, la vull explicar-te demà.

Incorrect in the intended neutral construction — the two pronouns representing one infinitival argument structure have been split.

✅ La notícia, te la vull explicar demà.

I want to explain the news to you tomorrow.

The coherent alternatives are te la vull explicar and vull explicar-te-la. In both, te + la remains one cluster. Catalan does have construction-specific clitic placement, but learners must not distribute members by copying the English words around the verbal phrase.

When the “wrong” sentence has another meaning

Some repairs change the message rather than merely improving the form. Diagnose the intended speech act and antecedents before changing anything.

Me l'explica amb molta paciència.

She explains it to me very patiently. — grammatical statement, not a command.

Explica-me'l amb molta paciència.

Explain it to me very patiently. — affirmative command.

The preverbal cluster in the first sentence is fully grammatical because explica is third-person present indicative. Capitalization alone does not create an imperative; placement reveals the analysis.

La proposta, els la presentaré dilluns.

I'll present the proposal to them on Monday. — els is a plural recipient.

La proposta, l'hi presentaré dilluns.

I'll present the proposal to him or her on Monday. — hi represents one recipient in the Central pattern.

Both clusters are possible, but recipient number changes. A repair made without identifying a qui? can silently replace “them” with “him/her.”

Regional forms are systems, not errors

(regional: Valencian) li'l, li la, li'ls, li les preserve li before a definite object. (regional: Central) the corresponding sequence is normally l'hi, la hi, els hi, les hi. (regional: Balearic) and (regional: Northwestern) inventories and combinations may include locally standard full forms; (regional: Alguerese) and (regional: Northern) likewise have inherited systems shaped by their own histories. Consult regional weak-pronoun forms before marking a coherent variety defective.

Spanish contact is different from regional Catalan variation. A speaker may produce se lo or retain Spanish order under contact, but a Catalan form is not a calque merely because its spelling resembles Spanish. The diagnostic is whether its roles, order, and placement belong to an attested Catalan system.

Correction task

Repair these mentally with the five-question workflow: El premi, li el van concedir ahir (Central baseline); La clau, guarda-me la; No digues-m'ho encara; and Us vull donar-lo demà. Then compare:

El premi, l'hi van concedir ahir.

They awarded him the prize yesterday. — Central el + li becomes l'hi.

La clau, guarda-me-la.

Keep the key for me. — affirmative imperative, postverbal cluster, hyphens.

No m'ho diguis encara.

Don't tell me yet. — a negative imperative requires preverbal placement.

Us el vull donar demà. / Vull donar-vos-el demà.

I want to give it to you tomorrow. — keep the whole cluster before the finite verb or after the infinitive.

What the pattern reveals

The ten repairs above represent the recurring families: translated order, se'n, object + hi, Central l'hi, plural els ho, cluster allomorphy, rightward elision, finite placement, imperative placement, and illicit splitting. A separate danger is deleting a pronoun merely because the resulting cluster looks difficult. If both full complements are required, simplify the sentence or verify the cluster on the relevant reference page; do not erase grammatical information.

💡
Clusters are easiest to proofread backwards from meaning: restore every full phrase, label every function, rebuild the Catalan cluster, then check placement and spelling.

Key Takeaways

  • Recover and label every antecedent before building a cluster.
  • Choose one coherent regional order, especially for singular li plus a definite object.
  • Move the whole cluster together; never split it around a verbal group by analogy with English.
  • Determine grammatical order before applying apostrophes and hyphens.

Proofreading checklist

  • Can you name the full antecedent of every weak pronoun?
  • Have you distinguished a direct object from a singular or plural recipient?
  • Does the order follow one coherent Catalan regional system?
  • In the Central pattern, have you handled li + el/la/els/les as object + hi?
  • Is the whole cluster before a finite verb and after an affirmative imperative?
  • If an infinitive or gerund licenses two positions, have you kept the cluster together?
  • Are me/te/se and em/et/es chosen for their actual environment?
  • Is each apostrophe as far right as the permitted forms allow?
  • Do postverbal forms use the required hyphens?
  • Would changing the cluster change person, number, or the sentence type?
