Spanish-Looking Forms That Mislead

The most dangerous Spanish-looking form is not always a completely different word. Often it is a nearly identical noun with another gender, a familiar stem with the wrong Catalan suffix, or a cognate verb that assigns its participants differently. The sentence remains understandable, so the learner receives little corrective feedback and the pattern fossilizes.

This clinic therefore treats grammatical false friends, not a list of amusing vocabulary pairs. For every suspect form, inspect its morphology, agreement, argument structure, preposition, or function in the clause. Review the larger clause patterns on Transitive Sentences.

The diagnostic workflow

  1. Identify the head: noun, verb, adjective, determiner, or connector.
  2. If it is a noun, verify Catalan gender and singular/plural form independently of Spanish.
  3. If it is a verb, write its complete frame: ajudar algú, telefonar a algú, informar algú de, adonar-se de.
  4. If it has a familiar suffix, check the Catalan lemma instead of adapting Spanish spelling sound by sound.
  5. If it is a short function word, test its grammatical job: quantity, negation, consequence, or contrast.
  6. Look for a different Catalan sentence in which the suspect form is valid; that prevents overcorrection.
  7. Check whether a form belongs to a regional standard before rejecting it.
💡
Store a cognate with its grammar. Learning only anàlisi = analysis leaves two traps intact; learn una anàlisi detallada / dues anàlisis detallades.

Gender and number: familiarity predicts nothing

Spanish gender can pull Catalan articles and adjectives in the wrong direction. English creates a different problem: it gives no gender cue at all. The correction must propagate through the whole noun phrase.

Repair 1 — costum is masculine.

❌ Aquesta costum antiga encara és molt estesa al poble.

Spanish la costumbre has pulled costum into the feminine; the determiner and adjective now disagree with Catalan gender.

✅ Aquest costum antic encara és molt estès al poble.

This old custom is still widespread in the village.

Repair 2 — senyal is masculine.

❌ La primera senyal lluminosa indica la sortida d'emergència.

Spanish la señal encourages the wrong Catalan gender and agreement.

✅ El primer senyal lluminós indica la sortida d'emergència.

The first illuminated sign indicates the emergency exit.

Repair 3 — anàlisi is feminine and lacks final -s in the singular.

❌ L'anàlisis preliminar era massa superficial.

The Spanish singular análisis has been copied together with masculine agreement.

✅ L'anàlisi preliminar era massa superficial.

The preliminary analysis was too superficial.

The plural is les anàlisis preliminars. Number appears in the article and adjective even though the noun's plural adds -s to give anàlisis.

Repair 4 — the formal baseline is feminine calor.

❌ Aquest calor humit m'esgota abans de migdia.

Outside varieties that use masculine calor, this copies Spanish gender into the neutral formal baseline.

✅ Aquesta calor humida m'esgota abans de migdia.

This humid heat exhausts me before noon.

Masculine el calor is established (regional/informal) in parts of the Catalan-speaking area. Preserve it in authentic regional speech; use la calor in conservative pan-regional formal prose. Regional gender is not automatically a calque.

Near-cognate morphology: do not catalanize one sound at a time

A Spanish stem plus a plausible Catalan ending can produce a form that does not belong to the standard lexicon. The solution is to retrieve the Catalan lemma, not to “improve” the spelling of the calque.

Repair 5 — garantir, not garantitzar.

❌ El contracte no garantitza el manteniment dels ascensors.

The form expands Spanish garantizar with a Catalan-looking -itza sequence.

✅ El contracte no garanteix el manteniment dels ascensors.

The contract does not guarantee maintenance of the lifts.

Repair 6 — donar suport, not apoiar.

❌ Totes les entitats van apoiar la proposta del barri.

Spanish apoyar has been superficially adapted; apoiar is not the neutral standard Catalan verb here.

✅ Totes les entitats van donar suport a la proposta del barri.

All the organizations supported the neighborhood proposal.

Repair 7 — reflectir, not reflexar.

❌ L'informe no reflexa les necessitats reals de les famílies.

The form copies Spanish reflejar through a deceptive familiar stem.

✅ L'informe no reflecteix les necessitats reals de les famílies.

The report does not reflect the families' real needs.

Do not extend this suspicion to authentic regional morphology. (Regional: Valencian) tindre, vindre, vore and subjunctives such as siga are standard Valencian forms, not failed attempts at Central tenir, venir, veure, sigui. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese forms likewise require evidence, not resemblance-based correction.

Cognate verbs can assign different grammatical roles

Transitivity determines articles, prepositions, clitics, and passive possibilities. Spanish personal a is especially likely to make a Catalan direct object look indirect.

Repair 8 — ajudar takes a direct object.

❌ La mediadora va ajudar a les dues famílies durant la negociació.

Automatic Spanish personal a has been added to an ordinary Catalan direct object.

✅ La mediadora va ajudar les dues famílies durant la negociació.

The mediator helped both families during the negotiation.

Repair 9 — afectar takes a direct object.

❌ La nova tarifa afectarà als abonats a partir del gener.

Spanish afectar a has displaced Catalan transitive afectar in the neutral pattern.

✅ La nova tarifa afectarà els abonats a partir del gener.

The new rate will affect subscribers starting in January.

Repair 10 — informar algú de/sobre una cosa.

❌ Ja hem informat als residents sobre el tall d'aigua.

The people informed are direct objects, not recipients introduced automatically by Spanish personal a.

✅ Ja hem informat els residents sobre el tall d'aigua.

We have already informed the residents about the water outage.

Repair 11 — telefonar needs a.

❌ Telefonaré la gestora quan tingui totes les dades.

English ‘call someone’ has encouraged a bare direct object; telefonar selects a.

✅ Telefonaré a la gestora quan tingui totes les dades.

I'll phone the case manager when I have all the information.

This last error is English-driven, not Spanish-driven, because Spanish telefonear/llamar a alguien also has a. A responsible diagnosis distinguishes the source of transfer instead of calling every non-Catalan pattern a castellanism.

💡
For every new verb, record one miniature frame: ajudar algú, afectar algú, telefonar a algú, informar algú de la decisió. The frame predicts both prepositions and clitics.

Selected prepositions carry idiomatic meaning

The adjective diferent preferably introduces its comparison with de in careful Catalan, although the current standard also accepts a. Sensory predicates use fer olor de and tenir gust de, rather than copying Spanish oler/saber a.

Repair 12 — a formal preference, not an error.

El resultat és molt diferent al que ens havien promès.

Accepted in current standard Catalan; a is not by itself evidence of a Spanish calque.

✅ El resultat és molt diferent del que ens havien promès.

The preferred form in careful edited prose: the result is very different from what they had promised us.

Repair 13 — sensory de.

❌ Aquest te fa olor a fum i té gust a fusta cremada.

Spanish oler/saber a has been mapped onto Catalan predicates.

✅ Aquest te fa olor de fum i té gust de fusta cremada.

This tea smells of smoke and tastes of burnt wood.

The sequence a fum is not impossible after every verb: Han exposat els aliments a fum durant hores uses a with exposar. The governing predicate, not the noun fum, chooses the preposition.

Function words: short forms, large consequences

Spanish varios is often copied as varis meaning “several.” Catalan vari is a genuine adjective, but it means “varied/diverse in character,” not an indefinite quantity.

Repair 14 — quantity.

❌ Hem rebut varis pressupostos abans del termini.

Spanish varios has been copied for ‘several.’

✅ Hem rebut diversos pressupostos abans del termini.

We received several quotations before the deadline.

Yet El programa és vari i equilibrat is correct: “The program is varied and balanced.” That is the first meaning-changing case; deleting vari everywhere would erase a real Catalan adjective.

Spanish ningún/nada also tempts learners to distribute negative words by translation. Catalan normally uses cap with count nouns, gens (de) with uncountable quantity or degree, and res as a pronoun.

Repair 15 — choose the negative by function.

❌ No queda res cadira lliure i no tenim cap paciència.

Res cannot determine cadira, while cap does not express an uncountable degree of patience here.

✅ No queda cap cadira lliure i no tenim gens de paciència.

There isn't a single free chair left, and we have no patience.

Finally, Catalan mateix can identify sameness or intensify a pronoun, while ara mateix means “right now.” It does not automatically reproduce every discourse use of Spanish mismo.

Ho va revisar la directora mateixa.

The director herself reviewed it. (emphatic mateix, agreeing with directora)

Ho va revisar la mateixa directora.

The same director reviewed it. (identifying sameness)

This second meaning-changing contrast shows how adjective position changes interpretation even though both sentences are grammatical.

Register and regional evidence

The repaired forms are safe in IEC and AVL (formal) prose. Informal bilingual speech may use varis, garantitzar, broad personal a, or Spanish-shaped prepositions frequently; describe that distribution honestly, but do not present it as the neutral edited model. Conversely, recognized Valencian verb forms, Balearic personal articles, Northwestern clitic or agreement patterns, Northern contact features, and Alguerese forms need specific regional analysis. Resemblance to Spanish is not evidence of origin or defect.

Correction task

Correct each grammatical false friend and name the level affected.

  1. La senyal vermella afecta als conductors novells.
  2. Hem encarregat dos anàlisis preliminars.
  3. La cooperativa apoiarà a les productores locals.
  4. Varis tallers fan olor a dissolvent.

Answers: El senyal vermell afecta els conductors novells (gender and transitivity); Hem encarregat dues anàlisis preliminars (gender and number); La cooperativa donarà suport a les productores locals (lemma and its complement); Diversos tallers fan olor de dissolvent (quantifier and sensory preposition).

Common Mistakes

❌ Tinc un dubte concreta sobre aquesta anàlisis.

Dubte is masculine; anàlisi is feminine singular; both agreements were guessed from Spanish forms.

✅ Tinc un dubte concret sobre aquesta anàlisi.

I have a specific question about this analysis.

❌ La campanya garantitza ajuda a varis projectes juvenils.

Two plausible-looking calques occur together: garantitza and quantifying varis.

✅ La campanya garanteix ajuda a diversos projectes juvenils.

The campaign guarantees support for several youth projects.

❌ Aquest ambient no agrada als canvis sobtats.

Grammatical roles have been misread: the sentence says the environment dislikes changes.

✅ A aquest ambient no li convenen els canvis sobtats.

Sudden changes do not suit this environment.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn a noun with article, agreement, and plural: apparent cognates do not preserve Spanish gender automatically.
  • Retrieve the Catalan lemma; a Spanish stem plus Catalan-looking spelling is still a calque.
  • Store verbs with their arguments and prepositions, especially around human objects.
  • Test short forms by function: vari means “varied,” while diversos quantifies; cap, gens, res divide negative jobs.
  • Confirm regional status before correction: resemblance to Spanish is not evidence that a form is defective.

Final proofreading checklist

  • Have you checked Catalan noun gender rather than inheriting Spanish gender?
  • Does agreement extend across article, adjective, participle, and pronoun?
  • Is the apparent singular actually a copied Spanish -s form such as anàlisis?
  • Have you retrieved the Catalan lemma instead of adapting a Spanish stem phonetically?
  • What is the verb's complete Catalan argument frame, including required prepositions?
  • Is personal a licensed by Catalan syntax, or imported automatically?
  • Does the preposition belong to this Catalan predicate?
  • Is a short form such as vari, cap, gens, res, mateix performing the intended grammatical function?
  • Could the suspicious form be correct with another meaning or in an accepted regional variety?
