English usually gives learners no gender cue, while Spanish sometimes gives the wrong cue for Catalan. The resulting error can spread across an entire phrase: choosing the wrong article often produces the wrong demonstrative, adjective, and pronoun too. A useful correction therefore starts with the noun's lexical gender and then checks every agreeing word—not just the most visible ending.
This is an error clinic, not a catalogue of all gender patterns. The productive system is explained in Masculine and Feminine Nouns. Here the goal is a repeatable test: identify the head noun, recover its article, mark its number, and then propagate those features through the phrase.
Why the false analogies feel convincing
The ending -a often suggests feminine and a consonant often suggests masculine, but high-frequency words defy those tendencies: el problema, el dia, el mapa; la mà, la dent, la nit. English encourages guessing because it does not normally mark gender on the or adjectives. Spanish encourages a subtler mistake: a cognate can look nearly identical while changing gender, as in Spanish el diente but Catalan la dent.
Repairs 1–4: correct the noun before the adjective
1. La dent, not el dent. This is a classic Spanish-contact error.
❌ Tinc el dent trencat des de dilluns.
Incorrect — dent is feminine in Catalan, despite Spanish el diente.
✅ Tinc la dent trencada des de dilluns.
I have had a broken tooth since Monday.
The repair changes both the article and trencada. Correcting only one would leave the agreement chain broken.
2. La calor is feminine in the neutral standard.
❌ Aquest calor humit és insuportable al migdia.
Incorrect in the neutral standard — calor is feminine, so the determiner and adjective must be feminine.
✅ Aquesta calor humida és insuportable al migdia.
This humid heat is unbearable at midday.
Masculine el calor occurs in some speech and historical usage, but neutral IEC/AVL prose uses la calor. Do not label every regional token defective; choose la calor for a pan-regional learner baseline.
3. El dubte is masculine. Final -e does not decide gender.
❌ Encara tinc una dubte important sobre el pressupost.
Incorrect — dubte is masculine.
✅ Encara tinc un dubte important sobre el pressupost.
I still have an important question about the budget.
4. El senyal is masculine in Catalan. Spanish la señal is a particularly strong trap.
❌ La senyal lluminosa era massa dèbil.
Incorrect — Catalan senyal is masculine.
✅ El senyal lluminós era massa dèbil.
The light signal was too weak.
The deciding evidence is the Catalan article, not the cognate's gender in another language. More such contrasts belong to Gender Endings and Exceptions.
Repairs 5–7: follow the grammatical head
5. A misleading ending does not feminize problema.
❌ És una problema complicada, però la resoldrem aviat.
Incorrect — problema is masculine, so both article and adjective must be masculine.
✅ És un problema complicat, però el resoldrem aviat.
It is a complicated problem, but we will solve it soon.
Notice that the direct-object pronoun also changes from la to el. Gender is a sentence-level dependency, not decoration beside the noun.
6. Agreement follows persona, not the person's sex.
❌ En Biel és una persona molt tranquil i reservat.
Incorrect — the predicate adjectives describing persona agree with the feminine head noun.
✅ En Biel és una persona molt tranquil·la i reservada.
Biel is a very calm and reserved person.
This does not describe Biel as female. Persona is grammatically feminine regardless of the referent. The same principle applies to la víctima and la criatura.
7. Watch agreement at a distance. A plural subject can be separated from its adjective by a verb and several complements.
❌ Les conclusions de l'informe semblen prou clar.
Incorrect — clar must agree with the feminine plural head conclusions, not with singular informe.
✅ Les conclusions de l'informe semblen prou clares.
The report's conclusions seem clear enough.
Find the head by asking “What seems clear?” The answer is les conclusions, so neither proximity nor the gender of informe matters. See Agreement at a Distance for more complex clauses.
Repairs 8–9: coordinated nouns
When one adjective jointly modifies two singular nouns, the adjective is normally plural. Two feminine heads produce feminine plural; a mixed masculine-and-feminine coordination conventionally produces masculine plural in the formal standard.
8. Two feminine nouns:
❌ La finestra i la porta han quedat obert després de la visita.
Incorrect — one adjective describes two feminine nouns, so it must be feminine plural.
✅ La finestra i la porta han quedat obertes després de la visita.
The window and the door were left open after the visit.
9. Mixed coordination:
❌ He comprat una jaqueta i un jersei noves per al viatge.
Incorrect in standard agreement — mixed gender takes plural masculine nous.
✅ He comprat una jaqueta i un jersei nous per al viatge.
I bought a new jacket and sweater for the trip.
Some writers avoid generic masculine agreement for people by recasting the phrase, for example el personal nou instead of a long mixed list. That stylistic choice does not alter the basic agreement rule inside the original noun phrase. Word order can also change scope: una jaqueta i un jersei nou most naturally lets nou modify only jersei, not both purchases.
Repair 10: do not let l' hide gender
Elision makes masculine and feminine articles look identical. Recover an unelided determiner or the plural before choosing the adjective.
❌ L'anàlisi detallat confirma la hipòtesi inicial.
Incorrect — anàlisi is feminine, although l' conceals that fact.
✅ L'anàlisi detallada confirma la hipòtesi inicial.
The detailed analysis confirms the initial hypothesis.
The useful memory form is una anàlisi detallada or plural les anàlisis detallades. Never infer masculine gender merely because singular l' supplies no visible clue.
Two wrong-for-the-context forms with real meanings
Some gender “errors” are actually lexical choices. Changing the article selects another noun meaning.
Necessitem una clau prou llarga per penjar aquest mirall.
Valid Catalan, but una clau means a key; the intended hardware is un clau, a nail.
✅ Necessitem un clau prou llarg per penjar aquest mirall.
We need a nail long enough to hang this mirror.
Han apagat la llum del sostre perquè feia un soroll estrany.
Valid if they turned off the light/illumination, but the intended noisy device is el llum.
✅ Han apagat el llum del sostre perquè feia un soroll estrany.
They switched off the ceiling light fixture because it was making a strange noise.
The contrast la llum “light, illumination” versus el llum “lamp/light fixture” is lexical and can vary in natural phrasing by context. Likewise, la fi is an end, whereas el fi is a purpose. A correction that erases the intended meaning is not a correction.
Regional and register cautions
Gender variation is real. El mar and la mar are both established; feminine usage is especially traditional, literary, maritime, and common in several coastal varieties, including (regional: Balearic and Valencian) speech. Other lexical items differ across Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese Catalan. Formal IEC and AVL norms overlap broadly but may document different preferences. Consult Lexical Gender Variation before “fixing” a native regional form.
Spanish contact must also be diagnosed precisely. La dent → el dent and el senyal → la senyal are contact-driven substitutions in the neutral Catalan norm; an independently established regional variant is a different phenomenon. English-driven errors, by contrast, often leave the article correct but the adjective unchanged because English adjectives never agree.
A short correction task
Repair the whole chain, not one word: La senyal vermella indicava una problema greu, i les instruccions del cartell no eren prou clar.
✅ El senyal vermell indicava un problema greu, i les instruccions del cartell no eren prou clares.
The red signal indicated a serious problem, and the instructions on the sign were not clear enough.
The first two heads are masculine singular; the distant predicate clares answers to feminine plural instruccions.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ha mantingut una costum antiga de la família.
Incorrect — costum is masculine, so both the article and adjective must change.
✅ Ha mantingut un costum antic de la família.
She has maintained an old family custom.
❌ Aquestes mapes detallades ocupen massa espai a la taula.
Incorrect — mapa is masculine despite final -a, and the whole phrase must agree.
✅ Aquests mapes detallats ocupen massa espai a la taula.
These detailed maps take up too much room on the table.
❌ Em fa mal la mà esquerre des de la caiguda.
Incorrect — mà is feminine, and the adjective has the feminine form esquerra.
✅ Em fa mal la mà esquerra des de la caiguda.
My left hand has hurt since the fall.
Key Takeaways
- Learn each noun with an article; endings and cognates are clues, never guarantees.
- Repair the whole agreement chain, including distant adjectives and object pronouns.
- With coordination, decide the adjective's scope before assigning plural gender.
- Check whether an article change selects a different lexical meaning rather than merely fixing agreement.
Final proofreading checklist
- Have you identified the head noun of every phrase?
- Can you recall that noun with un/una or el/la, rather than relying on its ending?
- Do all determiners and adjectives share the head's gender and number?
- For coordinated nouns, does the adjective modify one noun or the whole coordination?
- Could changing the article change the lexical meaning, as with clau or llum?
- Is an apparent mismatch actually an accepted regional or register-specific variant?
