Existential Haver-hi Errors

Errors with haver-hi rarely come from one bad conjugation. They come from forcing Catalan into an English frame (“there are”) or a Spanish-contact frame (estar for presence), and from overlooking the information structure of the noun after the verb. The reliable cure is to ask two questions: am I introducing something as existing, or locating something already identified? If you are introducing it, use the complete existential construction haver-hi and keep it singular in the formal standard.

The neutral Central Catalan baseline is hi ha una plaça lliure and hi ha tres places lliures. English changes is to are; standard Catalan does not. The more complete tense inventory is on Existential Haver-hi Across Tenses; here the purpose is to find and repair recurrent errors.

The four-step diagnostic

Use this workflow whenever English suggests “there is/are/was/will be.”

  1. Existence or location? If you are introducing an entity or event, choose haver-hi. If the entity is already identified and you are saying where it is, normally choose ser or ser-hi.
  2. Is hi present? Existential haver requires it: hi ha, hi havia, hi haurà, hi hagi. It is not the translation of an optional English “there.”
  3. Is the verb singular? In formal IEC/AVL Catalan, existential haver-hi is impersonal: hi havia tres opcions, not hi havien.
  4. Does the following noun sound newly introduced? Indefinite and quantified phrases fit naturally. A strongly definite phrase often belongs in a locative clause instead.
💡
Cover the noun after the verb. If the remaining frame means “something exists/occurs”—Al barri hi ha…—you need existential haver-hi. If you are answering “Where is the known person or object?”, make that entity the subject: La farmacèutica és al taulell.

Repairs 1–4: recover the complete construction

1. Do not drop hi after a fronted place. English can begin “In this street, there is…,” but Catalan does not let the location replace hi.

❌ En aquest carrer ha una fleca que obre diumenge.

Incorrect — the fronted location does not license bare existential ha.

✅ En aquest carrer hi ha una fleca que obre diumenge.

There is a bakery on this street that opens on Sunday.

2. Keep hi in past descriptions. A frequent learner blend is bare havia, encouraged by Spanish había.

❌ Quan vam entrar, havia dues finestres obertes.

Incorrect — existential havia still requires hi.

✅ Quan vam entrar, hi havia dues finestres obertes.

When we went in, there were two windows open.

3. Put hi before a finite form, not after it. Enclisis belongs to the infinitive haver-hi and gerund havent-hi; ordinary finite clauses use proclisis.

❌ Demà haurà-hi servei d'autobús fins a les dues.

Incorrect — hi cannot attach after the finite future form.

✅ Demà hi haurà servei d'autobús fins a les dues.

Tomorrow there will be a bus service until two.

4. Preserve hi in the subjunctive. The mood changes ha to hagi; it does not remove the pronoun.

❌ Espero que hagi prou temps per revisar l'informe.

Incorrect — the existential subjunctive is hi hagi.

✅ Espero que hi hagi prou temps per revisar l'informe.

I hope there is enough time to review the report.

The sound sequence hi ha can make hi easy to miss, but spelling exposes the grammatical structure. Learn each tense as a complete frame rather than conjugating bare haver and adding hi later.

Repairs 5–7: resist plural agreement in formal Catalan

The following noun is not a grammatical subject in the formal-standard analysis, so its number does not control the verb. This is the largest contrast with English.

5. Present:

Hi han quatre missatges sense respondre.

Colloquial agreement heard in native speech; not the formal-standard form used in edited prose.

✅ Hi ha quatre missatges sense respondre.

There are four unanswered messages.

6. Imperfect:

A la proposta hi havien algunes xifres contradictòries.

Colloquial agreement; in formal writing, use singular havia with the plural existential noun.

✅ A la proposta hi havia algunes xifres contradictòries.

There were some contradictory figures in the proposal.

7. Periphrastic and compound past:

Durant la nit hi van haver talls de llum i hi han hagut queixes.

Colloquial plural agreement; both auxiliaries must be singular in the formal standard.

✅ Durant la nit hi va haver talls de llum i hi ha hagut queixes.

During the night there were power cuts, and there have been complaints.

Plural agreement—hi han, hi havien, hi haurien—is widespread (informal; regional: Central and Valencian, among others) and is native speech, not evidence that a speaker “does not know Catalan.” IEC and AVL formal writing nevertheless maintain the invariant singular. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese usage has its own distribution; no regional label justifies treating all agreement alike. For exams, reports, professional writing, and a neutral pan-regional model, use singular forms.

💡
Proofread existential verbs independently of the following noun: circle hi ha, hi havia, hi va haver, hi ha hagut, hi haurà. If any form carries plural agreement, restore the singular before checking anything else.

Repairs 8–9: do not use estar merely to mean “exist”

English “there is” and Spanish-contact patterns can tempt learners to use estar. Catalan estar describes a state, continued presence, or manner of remaining; it does not normally introduce the existence of an indefinite entity.

8. Introduce a person with haver-hi.

❌ A recepció està una tècnica que et pot ajudar.

Incorrect for existential introduction — una tècnica is new information.

✅ A recepció hi ha una tècnica que et pot ajudar.

There is a technician at reception who can help you.

9. Announce an event with haver-hi.

❌ Divendres estarà una reunió oberta al veïnat.

Incorrect — an event is being announced as occurring, not described as remaining somewhere.

✅ Divendres hi haurà una reunió oberta al veïnat.

On Friday there will be a meeting open to local residents.

This does not make estar wrong whenever a location appears. Els tècnics estaran a recepció tota la tarda can emphasize that known technicians will remain or be on duty there. The test is not “Does the sentence contain a place?” but “Am I introducing existence, or predicating a state of an identified subject?”

Repair 10: match definiteness to the message

Existential clauses usually present something not yet established: una infermera, dos errors, prou menjar. If the listener already knows exactly which entity you mean, make it the subject of ser/ser-hi.

Hi ha la directora al despatx; pots entrar a parlar-hi.

Possible as a marked presentation, but awkward as a neutral location answer because la directora is already identified.

✅ La directora és al despatx; hi pots entrar a parlar amb ella.

The director is in her office; you can go in and talk to her.

Definite phrases after haver-hi are not categorically impossible. (informal/presentational) A fora hi ha la directora can mean “The person outside is the director” or “Among the people available, there is the director,” especially when identifying, listing, or announcing someone. The error is using that marked presentational frame as the default way to locate every known entity. See Presentational Constructions for that contrast.

Two forms that are grammatical—but say something else

These are meaning errors, not merely malformed strings.

La impressora hi és des de les vuit.

Valid Catalan: ‘The printer is there/present since eight,’ with a known printer; it does not introduce one.

✅ Des de les vuit hi ha una impressora disponible a la sala.

There has been a printer available in the room since eight.

Els vigilants estaran a l'entrada tota la nit.

Valid Catalan: the identified guards will remain or be on duty at the entrance. It does not merely introduce some guards.

✅ Hi haurà vigilants a l'entrada tota la nit.

There will be guards at the entrance all night.

The articles diagnose the intended discourse move: els vigilants retrieves known people; bare plural vigilants introduces a category. Changing the verb without noticing that difference can change the message.

A short correction task

Correct this notice: Demà hauran dues activitats, i a la sala gran estarà un taller. És possible que hagi places lliures. Work from meaning, not word-by-word translation.

✅ Demà hi haurà dues activitats, i a la sala gran hi haurà un taller. És possible que hi hagi places lliures.

Tomorrow there will be two activities, and there will be a workshop in the large room. There may be places available.

The future stays singular twice, estar becomes existential haver-hi, and the subjunctive retains hi.

Common Mistakes

❌ En aquest hotel haurà servei d'esmorzar des de les set.

Incorrect — even with a fronted place, existential haurà needs hi.

✅ En aquest hotel hi haurà servei d'esmorzar des de les set.

This hotel will have breakfast service from seven.

❌ A la cantonada està una farmàcia oberta tota la nit.

Incorrect — an indefinite business is being introduced, so use haver-hi rather than estar.

✅ A la cantonada hi ha una farmàcia oberta tota la nit.

There is a pharmacy on the corner that is open all night.

❌ Les infermeres hi ha a la segona planta.

Incorrect — the identified nurses are the subject of a locative clause, not an existential noun phrase.

✅ Les infermeres són a la segona planta.

The nurses are on the second floor.

❌ Abans de la reforma hi havia hagudes moltes avaries.

Incorrect — the participle in compound existential haver-hi does not agree with the following noun.

✅ Abans de la reforma hi havia hagut moltes avaries.

Before the renovation there had been many breakdowns.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the complete existential frame haver-hi; a fronted location never replaces hi.
  • Keep the existential verb singular in formal IEC/AVL Catalan, whatever the noun's number.
  • Use haver-hi to introduce existence and ser/ser-hi to locate an identified referent.
  • Treat definite phrases after haver-hi as marked presentational choices, not the neutral default.

Final proofreading checklist

  • Does every existential tense contain hi in the correct position?
  • Is each formal-standard existential verb singular, even before a plural noun?
  • Have you used haver-hi, rather than estar, to introduce an entity or event?
  • Is the postverbal noun genuinely new, indefinite, quantified, or contrastively presented?
  • If the referent is already identified, would X és aquí/allà or X hi és express the intended location more directly?
  • Have you preserved legitimate regional or informal usage when quoting speech, while labeling it clearly?
