English to be and there is/are cover several messages that Catalan keeps apart. Use ser to identify, classify, locate an event, or give the neutral whereabouts of a known referent; use estar for a state, position, or bounded stay; use haver-hi to introduce existence, availability, or a new item in a scene.
The fastest diagnostic is not “permanent or temporary” but known subject or introduced referent? La farmacèutica és a la rebotiga locates a particular pharmacist. Hi ha una farmacèutica a la rebotiga announces that such a person is available there.
For a fuller treatment of impersonal agreement and tense, see existential haver-hi.
The decision tree
- Are you saying who or what someone/something is? Choose ser.
- Are you announcing that someone/something exists, is available, or appears in the scene? Choose haver-hi.
- Is the referent already definite and you simply want its whereabouts? Choose ser in the neutral standard.
- Are you emphasizing a stay, duration, posture, or resulting condition? Choose estar.
- Are you locating an event? Choose ser if the venue/time is the answer; choose haver-hi if you are announcing that the event is on or exists in the program.
| Question answered | Choice | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| Who/what is it? | ser | És la nova infermera. |
| Where is the known person/thing? | ser | La infermera és a la consulta. |
| What is present or available? | haver-hi | Hi ha una infermera de guàrdia. |
| How/for how long is it there? | estar | Estarà a la consulta fins a les vuit. |
| Where does an event take place? | ser | La visita és a la consulta dos. |
| What event is scheduled? | haver-hi | A les sis hi ha una visita. |
Identification with ser versus existence with haver-hi
The noun phrase after ser identifies the subject. The noun phrase after existential haver-hi is the entity being introduced.
La dona de la fotografia és la meva besàvia.
The woman in the photograph is my great-grandmother. (identification)
A la capsa hi ha una fotografia de la meva besàvia.
There is a photograph of my great-grandmother in the box. (existence in a scene)
Changing the verb changes the information structure. The first sentence equates two descriptions of one known woman. The second adds a previously unmentioned photograph to the conversation.
Another minimal contrast:
En Pau és el tècnic que revisarà el projector.
Pau is the technician who will check the projector.
Hi ha un tècnic revisant el projector de la sala gran.
There is a technician checking the projector in the large room.
The indefinite un tècnic naturally accompanies presentation with haver-hi. Once the technician is identified as Pau, use ser for identity or neutral location.
New indefinite versus known definite location
This contrast is the heart of the three-way choice.
A recepció hi ha una traductora que parla àrab.
At reception there is an interpreter who speaks Arabic.
La traductora que parla àrab és a recepció.
The interpreter who speaks Arabic is at reception.
The first answers “Who is available?” The second answers “Where is that interpreter?” In neutral Catalan, do not automatically choose estar for the second just because Spanish or English uses its ordinary locative verb.
If duration matters, estar becomes natural:
La traductora estarà a recepció fins que s'acabi la reunió.
The interpreter will remain at reception until the meeting ends.
Now the sentence frames a bounded stay rather than mere whereabouts. The three forms can therefore describe the same person without being interchangeable: hi ha introduces her, és locates the known referent, and estarà measures her stay.
Objects: existence, location, and state
The distinction works for things as well as people.
Al balcó hi ha una cadira de boga que podem baixar.
There is a rush chair on the balcony that we can bring down.
La cadira de boga és al balcó, darrere les plantes.
The rush chair is on the balcony, behind the plants.
La cadira està tombada perquè aquesta nit ha fet molt de vent.
The chair is lying on its side because it was very windy last night.
These sentences introduce the chair, locate it after identification, and describe its resulting position. Estar does not simply replace ser because the chair is movable.
Partitive en can retrieve an introduced noun with haver-hi:
—Hi ha gots nets? —Sí, n'hi ha sis a l'armari de dalt.
—Are there any clean glasses? —Yes, there are six in the upper cupboard.
The cluster is n'hi ha, not hi en ha. In formal standard Catalan, existential haver-hi stays singular even before a plural noun: hi ha sis gots, hi havia moltes cadires. Plural forms such as hi han and hi havien are widespread (informal; regional in frequency) but are not the neutral edited standard.
Events: venue versus announcement
Use ser when the event itself is already under discussion and you specify its time or place.
El taller de ceràmica és dissabte al matí a l'aula del pati.
The pottery workshop is on Saturday morning in the courtyard classroom.
Use haver-hi when you announce that the event is scheduled or available:
Dissabte al matí hi ha un taller de ceràmica per a famílies.
On Saturday morning there is a pottery workshop for families.
The difference resembles definite versus presentational reference, not permanent versus temporary. Estar would describe a state of the workshop or a bounded presence of participants, not give the ordinary venue: El taller està complet (“The workshop is full”) is a state.
Definite phrases after haver-hi
The beginner rule “haver-hi must have an indefinite noun” is useful but not absolute. A definite phrase can follow in a list, reminder, or presentational answer when it is discourse-new as an item in the scene.
—Qui ens pot obrir la sala? —Hi ha la conserge, si encara no ha plegat.
—Who can open the room for us? —There's the caretaker, if she hasn't finished work yet. (presentational: proposed as an available option)
This presentational use does not neutrally locate the caretaker. It proposes her as an available option, so the definite phrase is nevertheless new in that discourse role. If both speakers are simply asking her whereabouts, say La conserge és al vestíbul. In formal prose, haver-hi can likewise introduce a definite item, but the presentational reading must be clear; use a subject construction when the referent is already established and only its location is at issue.
Likewise, El director hi és means “The director is there/present.” The pronoun hi belongs to ser-hi and the verb agrees with its subject. Hi ha un director means “There is a director.” These are not two word orders of one construction.
Ambiguous English prompts
"There is the manager" can announce an option—Hi ha la directora, que ens podria ajudar (presentational)—or point out arrival—Mira, ja arriba la directora. If it means that a known manager is present, use La directora hi és.
“The doctor is at the clinic” can mean neutral whereabouts or scheduled attendance:
El metge és a la clínica; el trobaràs a la segona planta.
The doctor is at the clinic; you'll find him on the second floor. (whereabouts)
El metge estarà a la clínica només fins a migdia.
The doctor will be at the clinic only until noon. (bounded stay)
“There is a concert in the square” is Hi ha un concert a la plaça when announcing it. “The concert is in the square” is El concert és a la plaça when giving the venue.
A dialogue where the choice changes the meaning
—Hi ha algú a l'arxiu? —Sí, la Marina hi és; hi estarà fins a les set perquè avui hi ha una inspecció.
—Is anyone in the archive? —Yes, Marina is there; she'll stay until seven because there's an inspection today.
The question asks about existence. La Marina hi és confirms the presence of an identified person. Hi estarà fins a les set adds duration, and hi ha una inspecció introduces the reason as a scheduled event. One short exchange uses all three systems.
Regional and register guidance
Neutral location with ser is the most general traditional pattern and the preferred Central/IEC formal baseline. Much Valencian, however, uses estar as its ordinary neutral locative verb because locative ser is not generally alive there; this is a regional system, not simply an informal error. Elsewhere, locative estar has also expanded in present-day speech, especially with animate subjects. The duration contrast remains useful in Central Catalan and in formal IEC prose. Valencian usage still distinguishes presentation with haver-hi from definite location; follow AVL or IEC guidance appropriate to your variety. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese patterns should be described on their own terms rather than graded by similarity to Central speech.
Across standards, existential haver-hi is impersonal in edited formal language. Regional plural agreement deserves recognition in conversation but should not be mixed randomly into an otherwise formal text.
Correction task
Complete the sequence: Al final del passadís una sala petita. La sala al costat de l'ascensor i avui _ tancada. The answers are hi ha (introducing it), és (neutral location of the now-known room), and està (current resulting state).
Common Mistakes
❌ Està una farmàcia oberta prop d'aquí?
Incorrect — asking whether an indefinite service exists requires haver-hi.
✅ Hi ha cap farmàcia oberta a prop a aquesta hora?
Is there any pharmacy open nearby at this hour?
❌ Hi han dues places lliures al costat de la finestra.
Nonstandard in edited prose — existential haver-hi remains singular.
✅ Encara hi ha quatre armariets buits al costat dels vestidors.
There are still four empty lockers beside the changing rooms.
❌ La sessió està a la biblioteca del barri.
Incorrect for the venue of an event — use ser.
✅ La sessió és a la biblioteca del barri.
The session is at the neighborhood library.
⚠️ Hi ha la meva germana a la cuina.
Grammatical with a presentational reading (‘there's my sister’), but not the neutral way to give a known person's whereabouts.
✅ La meva germana és a la cuina preparant el cafè.
My sister is in the kitchen making coffee.
Key Takeaways
- Ser identifies and gives neutral location; estar describes a state, position, or bounded stay.
- Haver-hi introduces existence, availability, or a discourse-new item.
- Contrast hi ha una assessora with l'assessora hi és: the first presents, the second confirms a known person's presence.
- Event venue takes ser; announcing a scheduled event takes haver-hi.
- Formal existential haver-hi stays singular, even with a plural following noun.
