Ser and Estar Errors

Catalan ser and estar cannot be chosen with the slogan “permanent versus temporary.” Use ser to identify, classify, characterize, locate an event, and—especially in the traditional general standard—to give the neutral whereabouts of an identified person or thing. Use estar to present a current or resulting state, a physical position, or presence viewed as a stay with duration.

English hides all these relations inside be. Spanish distinguishes ser and estar, but copying its choice still produces Catalan errors, particularly with neutral location. The reliable correction asks what relation the sentence asserts, then checks whether a different copula would create a different meaning.

For the full decision system beyond this error clinic, see Ser versus Estar.

The diagnostic workflow

When you meet a form of “be,” ask these questions in order:

  1. Does the complement identify, classify, or characterize the subject? Choose ser.
  2. Is the subject an event and the complement its time or venue? Choose ser.
  3. Is this merely the whereabouts of an identified person or thing? Neutral general Catalan traditionally uses ser; regional usage may differ.
  4. Does the sentence foreground a stay, duration, posture, or continued presence? Choose estar.
  5. Is an adjective or participle describing a current or attained state? Choose estar.
  6. Does the adjective have a different lexical meaning with each verb? Learn the two readings as a pair.
💡
Time length is evidence, not the rule. A one-day role can take ser, while a state that lasts for years can take estar.

Common Mistakes

1. Temporary identity still takes ser

❌ Avui la Júlia està la responsable de recepció.

Incorrect — the sentence assigns Júlia a role, even though that role lasts only today.

✅ Avui la Júlia és la responsable de recepció.

Today Júlia is the person in charge of reception.

The time word avui does not force estar. The noun phrase identifies who fills the role.

2. Professions classify with ser

❌ El meu veí està fuster i treballa al taller del polígon.

Incorrect — a profession classifies the subject and requires ser.

✅ El meu veí és fuster i treballa al taller del polígon.

My neighbor is a carpenter and works at the workshop in the industrial estate.

The profession is normally bare after ser. Neither temporary employment nor a current shift turns occupational classification into a state with estar.

3. Origin takes ser

❌ Som a Reus, però l'Arnau està de Tortosa.

Incorrect for origin — de Tortosa classifies Arnau by where he is from.

✅ Som a Reus, però l'Arnau és de Tortosa.

We're in Reus, but Arnau is from Tortosa.

Notice the useful contrast inside the repair: som a Reus gives current whereabouts, while és de Tortosa gives origin.

4. Events are located with ser

❌ La presentació està a la sala d'actes a dos quarts de set.

Incorrect — the subject is an event, so the venue and time take ser.

✅ La presentació és a la sala d'actes a dos quarts de set.

The presentation is in the assembly hall at six thirty.

An event does not occupy a place like an object; the sentence says where it takes place. Compare La sala d'actes està tancada, which describes the room's current state.

5. Physical position takes estar

❌ La bicicleta és recolzada a la paret del pati.

Incorrect for the bicycle's current physical position — ser suggests an eventive passive without a natural agent here.

✅ La bicicleta està recolzada a la paret del pati.

The bicycle is leaning against the courtyard wall.

The sentence describes the position in which the bicycle remains. This is not the neutral question of where it is, but a state involving posture or placement.

6. Fixed situational states use estar

❌ Aquesta setmana la directora és de vacances i no respondrà cap missatge.

Incorrect — the fixed situational expression is estar de vacances.

✅ Aquesta setmana la directora està de vacances i no respondrà cap missatge.

This week the director is on vacation and won't answer any messages.

Learn common state expressions with their copula: estar de vacances, estar de baixa, estar de guàrdia, and estar a punt de. They describe the subject's situation rather than identity.

7. Resulting conditions take estar

❌ La porta és oberta perquè acaba d'entrar el repartidor.

Wrong for the intended current result — the recent opening has left the door in an open state.

✅ La porta està oberta perquè acaba d'entrar el repartidor.

The door is open because the delivery driver has just come in.

Traditional Catalan allows ser with some state predicates more widely than current everyday Central usage. For the clear result reading taught here, estar is the robust contemporary choice.

8. Current physical or emotional state takes estar

❌ Després de caminar sis hores, som cansats i una mica marejats.

Incorrect for the present condition resulting from the walk.

✅ Després de caminar sis hores, estem cansats i una mica marejats.

After walking for six hours, we're tired and a little dizzy.

The state may last minutes or days; duration is not decisive. The cause-and-result framing makes estar natural.

9. Copula choice can change the adjective's meaning

❌ El programa ja és llest per publicar-lo.

Wrong for 'ready' — ser llest characterizes someone or something as clever or astute.

✅ El programa ja està llest per publicar-lo.

The program is ready to be published.

The adverb ja signals an attained condition. Memorize és llest “is clever” beside està llest “is ready,” rather than applying a vague temporary rule.

10. Passive event and resultant state need different copulas

❌ La porta està tancada pel conserge cada vespre a les deu.

Incorrect for the intended habitual passive event — the sentence says who performs the closing.

✅ La porta és tancada pel conserge cada vespre a les deu.

The door is closed by the caretaker every evening at ten.

The passive with ser + participle presents an action and allows an agent phrase. Afterward, A les deu i cinc, la porta està tancada reports the resulting state. In ordinary prose, an active sentence—El conserge tanca la porta...—is often lighter than the passive.

Two forms that are grammatical but mean something else

Correctors often overreach because both copulas can combine with the same adjective.

A l'estiu, aquesta sopa és freda; avui, però, encara està massa calenta.

In summer, this soup is a cold soup; today, however, it's still too hot.

És freda classifies the recipe as one served cold. Està freda would describe the temperature of a particular serving. The distinction is not permanence: both readings can change.

La coordinadora és atenta amb tothom, però ara està atenta al telèfon.

The coordinator is considerate toward everyone, but right now she's paying attention to the phone.

With ser, atenta characterizes her behavior or personality. With estar, it describes directed attention at a relevant moment. Calling either sentence “wrong” without its context would erase the lexical contrast.

Comparable pairs include és verd “is green” versus està verd “is unripe/not ready,” and és segur “is safe/certain” versus està segur “is sure.”

💡
When both verbs occur with one adjective, write a short paraphrase for each reading. If the paraphrases differ, the choice is lexical as well as aspectual.

Location: the area where transfer misleads most

Catalan traditionally asks On és la Marta? and answers És a la cuina. Add estar when the sentence highlights a stay, duration, or position: Estarà a la cuina fins a les dues; El gat està estirat sota la taula. An event remains with ser: El dinar és a la cuina gran.

Spanish strongly favors estar for the ordinary location of people and things, so Spanish-based learners may overextend it. Yet neutral estar is also genuine Catalan in Valencian and common in many speakers' usage. The correct editorial response is to establish a baseline and label variation, not to brand every On estàs? as foreign.

Les claus són al rebedor; estan penjades al costat del mirall.

The keys are in the hall; they're hanging beside the mirror.

The first clause gives neutral whereabouts; the second describes physical position. Holding the same object constant makes the semantic division visible.

Difficult and variable adjective classes

Civil status and long-term conditions do not fit a beginner slogan. With solter, casat, jubilat, viu, and mort, choice varies by adjective, construction, region, generation, and register. Careful Catalan may use ser solter as classification, while estar casat amb algú is widespread and foregrounds marital state. Ser/estar viu and ser/estar mort both occur.

Do not invent a categorical correction where standard usage is variable. In general formal writing, preserve an author's coherent variety unless meaning becomes unclear. With unmistakable current results such as està trencat, està apagat, and està bloquejada, the state analysis is much firmer.

English transfer, Spanish contact, and regional norms

English creates errors by supplying one undifferentiated verb. Spanish can create different errors by encouraging one-to-one copying. Central Catalan is the teaching baseline here, with neutral locative ser. (regional: Valencian) neutral locative estar is broadly accepted, including careful usage. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese patterns also have their own distributions, while traditional prose may retain ser in state contexts more widely than colloquial Central Catalan.

The IEC and AVL standards do not support the crude claim that one regional system is simply incorrect. A correction should say whether it repairs identity, event location, state, or viewpoint—and whether it assumes a particular regional baseline.

Correction task

Choose the copula and justify each choice: Avui l'Oriol el coordinador; ara nerviós perquè les claus no al calaix, i la reunió a punt de començar a la sala gran. A natural Central-baseline answer is és (temporary role is identity), està (current emotion), són (neutral whereabouts), and està in the fixed state expression estar a punt de.

Final proofreading checklist

  • Does the complement identify, classify, characterize, or give origin? Use ser.
  • Is the subject an event whose venue or time is being stated? Use ser.
  • Is the location neutral, or is a stay, duration, or posture being foregrounded?
  • Does an adjective describe a current or attained state? Consider estar.
  • Does changing the verb change the adjective's lexical meaning?
  • Is a participle eventive passive (ser, perhaps with an agent) or a resulting condition (estar)?
  • Have you relied on “permanent versus temporary” or copied Spanish without analyzing Catalan?
  • Is a disputed location form legitimate in the speaker's regional variety?

Key Takeaways

  • Use ser for identity, classification, characterization, origin, event location, and neutral location in the traditional general baseline.
  • Use estar for current or resulting states, physical position, and presence viewed as a stay or duration.
  • A temporary role can take ser, while a long-lasting attained condition can take estar; permanence is not the deciding test.
  • With adjectives and participles, changing the copula may change lexical meaning or distinguish an eventive passive from a result.
  • Treat neutral locative estar as genuine regional usage where appropriate, not automatically as Spanish interference.

A strong repair does more than swap verbs. It names the intended relation and shows why the alternative either changes meaning or belongs to another regional or discourse setting.
