Most Catalan nouns have a fixed lexical gender, but several different phenomena can look like “gender variation.” El mar and la mar are standard variants with the same basic meaning; el llum and la llum are different lexical meanings; advocat and advocada track the referent; and periodista keeps one noun form while its article changes. Treating all four patterns as one rule leads to errors.
The practical task is to learn what kind of variation a particular noun permits and then make every determiner and modifier agree with the chosen form. English usually hides this information, while Spanish can actively mislead because closely related nouns do not always have the same gender in the two languages.
For the core two-gender agreement system, begin with masculine and feminine nouns. This page concentrates on the lexical and regional cases where identifying the noun's gender is itself the difficult step.
A map of the main patterns
| Pattern | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Plural examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| two genders, same entity | el mar blau | la mar blava | els mars blaus / les mars blaves |
| distinct professional forms | un advocat nou | una advocada nova | uns advocats nous / unes advocades noves |
| one professional form | el periodista català | la periodista catalana | els periodistes catalans / les periodistes catalanes |
| same spelling, different meaning | el llum encès | la llum intensa | els llums encesos / les llums intenses |
This paradigm shows why the article alone is not the whole story. Once a gender is selected, agreement propagates through demonstratives, numerals where relevant, adjectives, and participles.
Aquestes dues noves enginyeres valencianes han estat nomenades responsables tècniques del projecte.
These two new Valencian engineers have been appointed technical leads for the project.
Every variable item in that sentence is feminine plural: aquestes, noves, enginyeres, valencianes, nomenades, and tècniques.
True double-gender nouns
A small set of nouns can be masculine or feminine without the gender choice changing the core referent. The variants are both standard, but their distribution may be constrained by frequency, register, geography, number, or lexical sense.
| Noun | More usual pattern | Accepted alternative |
|---|---|---|
| mar | el mar tranquil in Central and Northwestern usage | la mar tranquil·la, especially Valencian, Balearic, Northern, and Alguerese usage |
| art | l'art modern in the singular | feminine in established uses such as les belles arts |
| vessant in the aiguavés sense | el vessant inclinat | la vessant inclinada, also accepted for this sense |
| èmfasi | un èmfasi excessiu | una èmfasi excessiva, accepted but less usual |
The variation in vessant is sense-specific. In the aiguavés sense, referring to a slope of land or a roof down which rainwater drains, both genders are accepted. The ordinary geomorphological “mountainside” and figurative “aspect” senses are masculine in the general standard: el vessant nord, el vessant polític.
Des del penya-segat es veia el mar fosc i mogut.
From the cliff, the dark, rough sea was visible. Central baseline.
La mar estava tranquil·la quan vam sortir del port.
The sea was calm when we left the harbor. Regional: Valencian, Balearic, Northern, and Alguerese; also literary elsewhere.
The geographic distribution of mar is unusually clear: masculine dominates in Central and Northwestern speech, whereas feminine is characteristic of (regional: Balearic), (regional: Northern), and (regional: Alguerese) and is strongly represented in (regional: Valencian). Both genders belong to the standard. In the fixed quantity expression la mar de gent “a great many people,” however, the form is feminine regardless of the speaker's usual gender for the sea.
Same spelling, different lexical meaning
With another group of nouns, changing the article selects a different word meaning. These are not regional variants.
| Masculine | Meaning | Feminine | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| el llum | lamp, light fixture | la llum | light, illumination |
| el fi | aim, purpose | la fi | end |
| el son | sleep | la son | sleepiness |
| el clau | nail | la clau | key |
| el pols | pulse | la pols | dust |
Encén el llum del passadís, que aquí no hi ha prou llum natural.
Turn on the hallway light; there is not enough natural light here.
El fi de la campanya no justifica que n'amaguem la fi als participants.
The aim of the campaign does not justify hiding its end from the participants.
The second sentence is a context-sensitive minimal pair inside one sentence: masculine el fi means “aim,” while feminine la fi means “end.” Agreement can disambiguate even when the article is elided elsewhere.
Professional and role nouns
When referring to a specific person, use the gendered professional form that matches that person where Catalan has a regular pair: director/directora, advocat/advocada, metge/metgessa, jutge/jutgessa, president/presidenta, and alcalde/alcaldessa. These feminine forms are not informal inventions; they are standard occupational nouns.
La doctora Soler és la nova presidenta del comitè mèdic.
Dr. Soler is the new president of the medical committee.
Some role nouns have one form for both genders, with the article and modifiers carrying the contrast: el/la periodista, el/la cantant, el/la responsable, el/la cap. Elision can hide the article's gender, but agreement elsewhere reveals it: l'artista convidat / l'artista convidada.
La cap del servei, molt satisfeta amb els resultats, ha felicitat tot l'equip.
The head of the department, very pleased with the results, congratulated the whole team.
Other nouns keep one grammatical gender regardless of the referent: la persona, la víctima, and el personatge. Their modifiers agree with the noun, not directly with the person described.
En Biel és una persona discreta i una víctima innocent de l'estafa.
Biel is a discreet person and an innocent victim of the scam.
Current inclusive usage
In reference to known individuals, precision comes first: Maria Fortuny, advocada; Joan Colomer i Pere Espunya, assessors; Anna Rius i Emma Prat, traductores. Using a masculine title for a specifically identified woman when a standard feminine form exists erases information that Catalan normally expresses.
For mixed or unspecified groups, contemporary (formal) institutional style has several standard resources:
- collective nouns: el professorat, l'alumnat, el personal;
- person-based expressions: les persones candidates, la persona responsable;
- double forms when visibility matters: les directores i els directors;
- reformulation without a person noun: cal presentar la sol·licitud instead of els sol·licitants han de presentar....
El personal docent i les persones candidates rebran les instruccions per correu.
Teaching staff and candidates will receive the instructions by email.
The masculine plural remains grammatically available as the unmarked plural in the standard system, but institutional style may choose the alternatives above to make reference clearer or more representative. Double forms are useful in selected places, not as automatic duplication of every determiner and adjective. Slashes such as usuari/ària belong mainly to (formal) short forms and templates, not smooth continuous prose.
The proposed (informal) ending -i in forms such as toti or ellis is used in some communities for nonbinary inclusion, but it is not part of current IEC/AVL standard morphology. In standard formal writing, neutral collectives and person-based phrases avoid forcing a binary occupational label while preserving ordinary Catalan agreement. Respectful reference to a particular person's stated form remains a pragmatic choice distinct from the codified paradigm.
Fixed gender is not free variation
Do not generalize from the small double-gender class. Catalan calor is feminine: la calor intensa; senyal and dubte are masculine: el senyal clar, un dubte raonable. Spanish el calor, la señal, and la duda are misleading guides.
La calor intensa i el senyal lluminós ens van fer aturar.
The intense heat and the illuminated signal made us stop.
Modifier order does not change lexical gender. Neutral descriptive adjectives often follow their noun: una advocada experta, la mar tranquil·la. Prenominal position can add evaluation or emphasis, but English order is not the default template.
Regional forms also come as systems. Use Central aquesta advocada / aquestes advocades or (regional: Valencian) esta advocada / estes advocades. The profession noun and its agreement remain feminine in both.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating every gender alternation as free regional variation.
❌ He encès la llum petit del despatx.
Incorrect — for a lamp, the noun is masculine el llum; petit must agree with it.
✅ He encès el llum petit del despatx.
I turned on the small lamp in the office.
2. Leaving a professional title in the masculine for a known woman.
❌ La nova metge ha parlat amb els familiars.
Incorrect in standard Catalan — use the established feminine metgessa.
✅ La nova metgessa ha parlat amb els familiars.
The new doctor has spoken with the family.
3. Guessing gender from Spanish.
❌ El calor intens continuarà fins demà.
Incorrect — calor is feminine in standard Catalan.
✅ La calor intensa continuarà fins demà.
The intense heat will continue until tomorrow.
4. Copying English modifier order and invariability.
❌ Les expertes advocat han revisat el contracte.
Incorrect — the profession noun must be feminine plural, and neutral descriptive order puts expertes after it.
✅ Les advocades expertes han revisat el contracte.
The expert lawyers have reviewed the contract.
5. Mixing Central and Valencian paradigms.
❌ Aquesta presidenta coordina estes dues comissions.
Inconsistent in a single neutral variety — aquesta is Central and estes is Valencian.
✅ Aquesta presidenta coordina aquestes dues comissions.
This president coordinates these two committees. Central standard baseline.
Key Takeaways
True double-gender nouns are few, and their variants can have strong geographic preferences. Gender can instead distinguish meanings or track a person's reference, while some professional nouns keep one form for both genders. Use established feminine occupational forms for identified women, choose inclusive resources according to context, and never let Spanish gender or English invariability override Catalan lexical evidence.
