Complex Noun-Phrase Agreement

In a simple phrase such as la porta oberta, agreement is local and visible. In els informes de la comissió aprovats ahir, the adjective stands beside comissió but agrees with the more distant head informes. Coordination, collective nouns, and shared modifiers make this relation harder to see, yet the underlying principle remains stable: identify exactly which noun or set of nouns the modifier describes.

English gives little help because most adjectives have no gender or number forms. Catalan agreement is not decorative repetition; it maps the structure and often resolves meaning. When a grammatical sentence is still hard to process, good editing should make that map easier to read.

If the four ordinary gender-number forms are not yet automatic, review basic adjective agreement first. This page extends that system to phrases with more than one possible controller.

One adjective after coordinated nouns

When one postposed adjective modifies two or more coordinated nouns, it is normally plural. If the nouns share a gender, that gender appears on the adjective; if their genders differ, the adjective takes masculine plural.

Al carrer encara hi ha cotxes i furgonetes abandonats.

There are still abandoned cars and vans on the street.

La llengua i la literatura catalanes tenen una llarga tradició escrita.

The Catalan language and literature have a long written tradition.

The masculine plural in a mixed group is the conventional unmarked agreement form; it does not claim that a feminine noun has changed gender. In cotxes i furgonetes abandonats, each noun retains its lexical gender, while abandonats describes their combined set.

💡
A postposed adjective looks left for all the coordinated heads in its scope. Count them first; then choose plural, using feminine plural only if every relevant head is feminine.

Editorial strategies for mixed gender

Regular mixed-gender agreement can put a masculine plural adjective directly after a feminine noun. Ordering the masculine noun last, as in una taula i un armari blancs, makes the relation easy to read; the reverse order, un armari i una taula blancs, may momentarily look like failed agreement with taula. Three edits can improve clarity without changing the rule:

  1. put the masculine noun next to the masculine plural adjective;
  2. repeat the adjective with local agreement;
  3. replace the adjective with a relative clause when the phrase is long.

Hem comprat una cadira i un tamboret rústics per al rebedor.

We bought a rustic chair and stool for the hallway.

Hem comprat un tamboret rústic i una cadira també rústica.

We bought a rustic stool and a chair that is rustic too.

Both are standard. The second is longer but removes any momentary mismatch. In (formal) technical or administrative prose, clarity is more important than preserving the most compressed possible coordination.

A shared adjective before the nouns

An adjective placed before coordinated nouns normally agrees only with the first noun. This asymmetry is real: a postposed modifier shows the features of the whole coordination, while a prenominal modifier is licensed locally by the first member.

El projecte exigirà la màxima dedicació i esforç durant sis mesos.

The project will require the utmost dedication and effort for six months.

La mediadora va destacar els importants acords i concessions de la reunió.

The mediator highlighted the important agreements and concessions from the meeting.

In the first sentence, màxima is feminine singular because dedicació comes first, even though it also has semantic scope over esforç. In the second, importants agrees with first head acords, which is already masculine plural.

This pattern does not license arbitrary English-style stacking before every noun. Neutral Catalan often favors postposition, especially for objective classification: acords importants. Prenominal adjectives readily sound evaluative, emphatic, or (formal) rhetorical.

💡
Position changes the agreement calculation. Before a coordination, agree with the first head; after it, normally agree with the entire coordinated set.

Determiners and the number of referents

Determiners may be repeated with each coordinated noun: la directora i la secretària. A single determiner can sometimes have scope over both: la llengua i literatura catalanes. The choice can also reveal whether two role nouns designate one person or two.

La directora i secretària de l'associació ha signat l'acta.

The association's director and secretary has signed the minutes. One woman holds both roles.

La directora i la secretària de l'associació han signat l'acta.

The association's director and secretary have signed the minutes. They are two women.

This context-sensitive minimal pair is not a punctuation trick. Repeating the article creates two independently referring noun phrases; using one article and a singular verb strongly favors one shared referent. If the real-world situation could still be misunderstood, state it explicitly.

English often permits one “the” before two separate roles. Copying that distribution into Catalan can blur the intended reference. Repeating the article is the clearest default for distinct people or objects.

An intervening noun does not steal agreement

A prepositional complement may stand between a head noun and its adjective. The adjective agrees with whichever noun it semantically modifies, and contrasting endings can make the intended attachment visible.

Han publicat els informes de la comissió aprovats ahir.

They published the committee reports that were approved yesterday. Aprovats modifies informes.

Han publicat els informes de la comissió aprovada ahir.

They published the reports from the committee that was approved yesterday. Aprovada modifies comissió.

The pair is grammatically possible but the second meaning is pragmatically unusual unless institutions are being formally constituted. That is precisely why agreement should be interpreted together with context. When both attachments are plausible, reposition the modifier: els informes aprovats ahir per la comissió.

Aquestes dues biblioteques i aquests tres arxius municipals, acabats de renovar, romandran oberts tot l'agost.

These two municipal libraries and these three archives, newly renovated, will remain open throughout August.

Here aquestes dues agrees locally with biblioteques, aquests tres with arxius, and the shared modifiers acabats and oberts are masculine plural because they describe the complete mixed-gender set.

Collective heads and nearby plurals

In un grup d'estudiants, the grammatical head is singular grup and estudiants is the complement. A modifier of the group is singular; a modifier of the students is plural.

Un grup nombrós d'estudiants estrangers esperava davant del rectorat.

A large group of international students was waiting outside the rector's office.

Un grup d'estudiants estrangers cansats esperava davant del rectorat.

A group of tired international students was waiting outside the rector's office.

Nombrós characterizes the group, whereas estrangers and cansats characterize the students. With quantificational collectives such as la majoria de, una part de, and un munt de, verb agreement may vary according to whether the speaker foregrounds the singular quantity or the plural members: La majoria dels convidats va marxar / van marxar. This accepted variation in the clause does not make noun-phrase adjective agreement random.

La majoria de les candidates seleccionades van enviar la documentació completa.

Most of the selected candidates submitted the complete documentation.

Here seleccionades is feminine plural because it modifies candidates. The singular feminine noun majoria controls a modifier that describes the majority itself: una majoria clara.

Semantic unity: a limited exception

When coordinated nouns form a close conceptual unit, a following adjective can occasionally appear singular and agree with the nearer noun: una arrogància i atreviment inusual. This is an accepted but marked edge case, not a general excuse for singular agreement. It is safest when the pair names two facets of one quality and has a single determiner.

For learner writing and edited prose, plural agreement or repetition is normally clearer: una arrogància i un atreviment inusuals; una arrogància inusual i un atreviment també inusual. There is no simple mechanical test for how much semantic unity is enough, so avoid forcing the exception.

Lexical gender and regional consistency

Correct long-distance agreement begins with the correct gender of each noun. Catalan senyal is masculine, unlike Spanish feminine señal: un senyal i una marca visibles, not a feminine article copied from Spanish.

The agreement rules above are shared across the IEC and AVL standards. Regional determiners still need internal consistency: Central aquest informe / aquests informes; (regional: Valencian) este informe / estos informes. Do not combine aquest informe with estos documents while presenting one neutral paradigm.

Common Mistakes

1. Agreeing only with the nearest noun after a mixed coordination.

❌ Han retirat els cotxes i les motos abandonades.

Incorrect for the intended shared reading — abandonades appears to modify only motos.

✅ Han retirat els cotxes i les motos abandonats.

They removed the abandoned cars and motorcycles.

2. Using plural agreement on a prenominal adjective.

❌ Calen les immediates resposta i seguiment.

Incorrect — a shared prenominal adjective and determiner must agree with the first singular noun, resposta.

✅ Calen la resposta i el seguiment immediats.

An immediate response and follow-up are needed.

3. Letting a nearby plural complement control a head modifier.

❌ És un grup d'alumnes molt nombrosos.

Incorrect if the intended meaning is that the group itself is large.

✅ És un grup molt nombrós d'alumnes.

It is a very large group of students.

4. Copying Spanish gender for a cognate.

❌ Han instal·lat una senyal nova i una alarma connectades.

Incorrect — senyal is masculine in Catalan.

✅ Han instal·lat un senyal nou i una alarma nova.

They installed a new sign and a new alarm.

5. Mixing Central and Valencian forms in one paradigm.

❌ Aquestes propostes i estos informes són urgents.

Inconsistent in a single neutral variety — aquestes is Central and estos is Valencian.

✅ Aquestes propostes i aquests informes són urgents.

These proposals and reports are urgent. Central standard baseline.

Key Takeaways

A postposed adjective normally agrees with every coordinated head: plural, and masculine plural for mixed genders. A shared prenominal adjective agrees with the first head. Intervening complements do not determine agreement automatically, and collective constructions contain separate agreement domains. When regular agreement yields a phrase that is technically correct but visually awkward, reorder, repeat, or unpack it.
