When two or more adjectives describe the same noun, Catalan normally marks the noun's gender and number on every adjective: una resposta clara i directa, unes respostes clares i directes. Coordination is more than inserting i “and,” however. Conjunctions, commas, adjective order, and repeated articles tell the reader whether the properties accumulate on one referent or distinguish separate groups.
English adjectives are invariant and usually stand before the noun, so English gives little visible help. In Catalan, each adjective remains a complete modifier with its own agreement, even when several modifiers share one noun.
Every coordinated adjective agrees
The conjunction does not allow the first adjective to “lend” its ending to the second. Each adjective independently agrees with the shared head.
| Head noun | Coordinated description | Complete phrase |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | clar i directe | un missatge clar i directe |
| feminine singular | clara i directa | una resposta clara i directa |
| masculine plural | clars i directes | uns missatges clars i directes |
| feminine plural | clares i directes | unes respostes clares i directes |
Busquem un pis cèntric, lluminós i ben comunicat, però no cal que sigui gaire gran.
We're looking for a centrally located, bright, well-connected apartment, but it doesn't need to be very large.
Les instruccions noves són més breus i més entenedores que les anteriors.
The new instructions are shorter and easier to understand than the previous ones.
In the first sentence, masculine singular cèntric, lluminós and comunicat all point to pis. The adverb ben is invariable, but the participial adjective after it still agrees: ben comunicat, ben comunicada, ben comunicats, ben comunicades.
Do not import the noun's gender from Spanish. Catalan síndrome is feminine, unlike Spanish síndrome, so every adjective in the coordination must use the Catalan controller.
La síndrome és crònica i dolorosa, però es pot controlar.
The syndrome is chronic and painful, but it can be controlled.
Cumulative properties versus alternatives
With i, the default reading is cumulative: the same referent has every named property. With o, the alternatives may be mutually exclusive or simply undecided.
Necessitem una solució ràpida i segura abans de divendres.
We need a quick and safe solution before Friday.
Podem aplicar una solució provisional o definitiva, segons el pressupost.
We can apply a temporary or permanent solution, depending on the budget.
Both adjectives are feminine singular because both modify solució. The conjunction changes the logical relation, not agreement. Negative coordination normally uses ni... ni...; each adjective still agrees.
La decisió no ha estat ni fàcil ni ràpida, però era necessària.
The decision was neither easy nor quick, but it was necessary.
Bare coordination can nevertheless be ambiguous. Les carpetes vermelles i blaves may describe folders containing both colors, or a mixed collection of red folders and blue folders. Repeating the article creates two contrastive sets:
He deixat les carpetes vermelles i blaves al prestatge de dalt.
I left the red-and-blue folders on the top shelf. In context, each folder has both colors.
He deixat les carpetes vermelles i les blaves al prestatge de dalt.
I left the red folders and the blue ones on the top shelf. Two groups are contrasted.
This is a context-sensitive minimal pair. In the second sentence, les blaves contains an omitted but recoverable carpetes; feminine plural agreement keeps that noun visible. Repeating a definite article is therefore a structural choice, not decorative emphasis.
Lists, commas, and the final conjunction
In a list of three or more coordinate descriptions, Catalan normally separates the earlier items with commas and puts i before the last: breu, clara i contundent. There is normally no comma before final i in a simple list.
La portaveu va donar una resposta breu, clara i contundent, i la reunió es va acabar de seguida.
The spokesperson gave a brief, clear, forceful answer, and the meeting ended immediately.
The comma after contundent closes the noun phrase before a new clause; it is not an English-style “Oxford comma.” A comma may be used for a genuine parenthesis or to prevent misreading, but it should not mechanically precede every final i.
Asyndetic sequences—adjectives separated only by commas—often create an accumulating descriptive rhythm. They are common in (literary) prose and in (formal) characterization, but everyday prose usually benefits from a final conjunction.
Al fons hi havia una sala fosca, humida, silenciosa.
At the back there was a dark, damp, silent room. (literary descriptive accumulation)
Coordination is not the same as adjective stacking
Adjectives at the same descriptive level coordinate naturally: una proposta clara i viable. Other sequences are hierarchical. A relational adjective first creates a subtype with the noun, and an outer adjective evaluates that subtype: una reforma fiscal ambiciosa. Adding i—una reforma fiscal i ambiciosa—forces “fiscal” and “ambitious” into a flat list and sounds unnatural in a neutral context.
El govern ha anunciat una reforma fiscal ambiciosa, però encara no n'ha publicat els detalls.
The government has announced an ambitious tax reform, but it has not published the details yet.
Here fiscal classifies the reform, while ambiciosa evaluates the resulting category. Neutral Catalan keeps both after the noun and generally places the classifier closer to it. See relational and classifying adjectives for the limits on degree and position.
English encourages long prenominal strings such as “an ambitious new European tax plan.” Catalan usually distributes such information around the noun: un nou pla fiscal europeu i ambiciós is possible in a carefully chosen context, but un pla fiscal europeu nou i ambiciós may suggest that “new” and “ambitious” are the coordinated evaluations. There is no punctuation formula that replaces deciding which adjective modifies which unit.
Shared wording versus repeated wording
Compact coordination shares the noun: mesures clares i eficaces. Repetition can make scope explicit: mesures clares i mesures eficaces. Ellipsis shares the noun but repeats its determiner: les mesures clares i les eficaces. These are not always interchangeable.
Compararem les mesures econòmiques i socials del programa.
We will compare the program's economic and social measures. The phrase can cover measures with one or both classifications.
Compararem les mesures econòmiques i les socials del programa.
We will compare the program's economic measures and its social ones. Two categories are explicitly contrasted.
In long (formal) sentences, repeating the noun is often the clearest option. Economy is useful only while the reader can recover the intended scope.
The coordination rule is common to the standard varieties. Regional determiner and possessive paradigms still need internal consistency: Central aquestes propostes meves, clares i viables; (regional: Valencian) estes propostes meues, clares i viables. Coordination does not justify mixing estes with meves in a supposedly single-variety model.
Common Mistakes
1. Marking agreement only on the last adjective.
❌ Volem una habitació tranquil i lluminosa.
Incorrect — both adjectives modify feminine singular habitació.
✅ Volem una habitació tranquil·la i lluminosa.
We want a quiet, bright room.
2. Copying English prenominal stacking.
❌ Han aprovat una social ambiciosa reforma.
Incorrect — this English-like order is not neutral Catalan.
✅ Han aprovat una reforma social ambiciosa.
They have approved an ambitious social reform.
3. Using one article when two groups must be unambiguous.
Separa les peces noves i defectuoses.
Ambiguous — it can suggest that the same pieces are both new and defective.
Separa les peces noves i les defectuoses.
Separate the new parts from the defective ones. The repeated article makes the two groups explicit.
4. Adding an English-style comma before a simple final i.
❌ És una proposta clara, viable, i econòmica.
Incorrect neutral punctuation — a simple Catalan list normally has no comma before final i.
✅ És una proposta clara, viable i econòmica.
It is a clear, feasible, economical proposal.
5. Mixing Central and Valencian neighboring forms.
❌ Estes propostes meves són clares i viables.
Inconsistent as a single-variety model — estes is Valencian, while meves is Central.
✅ Aquestes propostes meves són clares i viables.
These proposals of mine are clear and feasible. Central standard baseline.
Key Takeaways
Every coordinated adjective agrees independently with its head. Use i, o, or ni to express the logical relation; repeat the article when you mean separate contrastive groups; use commas for lists, not as a substitute for structure; and distinguish flat coordination from hierarchical adjective stacking. The visible endings help readers recover scope, so clarity depends on the whole noun phrase rather than on any adjective in isolation.
