Relational and Classifying Adjectives

In una decisió difícil, the adjective evaluates a decision; difficulty can come in degrees. In una decisió judicial, the adjective classifies it by institutional domain: it is a judicial rather than an administrative or political decision. Adjectives such as judicial, municipal, mèdic, ferroviari, and laboral are called relational or classifying because they relate the noun to a field, entity, material, purpose, or type.

This semantic role explains their grammar. In their strictly relational reading, they normally follow the noun, resist degree words such as molt, and combine most naturally with adjectives at the same classificatory level. The forms still show ordinary gender and number agreement.

Agreement is ordinary; meaning is classificatory

Relational adjectives use the same inflectional patterns as other adjectives. Some distinguish all four forms, while others distinguish number but not gender.

L'hospital ha renovat l'equipament mèdic de dues unitats pediàtriques.

The hospital has renewed the medical equipment in two pediatric units.

Les noves línies ferroviàries regionals estaran operatives a la tardor.

The new regional railway lines will be operational in the fall.

In the second sentence, noves, ferroviàries, regionals and operatives are all feminine plural, but they do different semantic work: ferroviàries and regionals classify the lines, while noves and operatives describe their state or properties.

Why relational adjectives normally follow the noun

A relational adjective combines closely with the noun to create a recognized subtype: política lingüística, mercat laboral, energia solar, transport marítim. Postposition keeps the classifier beside the noun it categorizes.

L'ajuntament presentarà la nova política energètica municipal la setmana vinent.

The city council will present the new municipal energy policy next week.

The closest unit is política energètica, a policy in the energy domain. Municipal then places that policy in a governmental domain, while evaluative nova naturally precedes the already classified unit. Not every string has only one possible order, but moving a relational adjective often changes emphasis or forces a descriptive reinterpretation.

Una empresa tecnològica catalana ha obert una oficina nova a Girona.

A Catalan technology company has opened a new office in Girona.

English readily places classifying words before the noun: “technology company,” “rail service,” “energy policy.” Catalan often uses a postnominal adjective (empresa tecnològica, servei ferroviari, política energètica) or a de phrase (base de dades, targeta de crèdit). Copying English order produces unnatural strings.

The broader contrast between neutral postposition and marked preposition is developed on the adjective position page.

💡
First build the classifying unit—política energètica, transport ferroviari—then add evaluative or discourse-sensitive adjectives around that unit.

Strict relational readings are not gradable

Something is municipal because of its administrative relation to a municipality, not because it possesses “municipality” to a greater or lesser degree. Consequently, molt municipal is normally unavailable when the intended meaning is simply “belonging to the municipality.” Likewise, a train is not més ferroviari than another train in the literal classifying sense.

El servei és municipal, no estatal, i es finança amb impostos locals.

The service is municipal, not state-run, and is funded through local taxes.

Predicative use is possible here because two classifications are explicitly contrasted. This does not make municipal gradable. Comparatives can also contrast category labels—una competència més municipal que autonòmica—but més then means “more appropriately classified as,” not “possessing a higher measurable degree.” Such wording is common in (academic) analysis.

Some relational adjectives develop a qualitative reading, and that new reading can take degree. Compare:

Han encarregat un informe tècnic abans de començar les obres.

They commissioned a technical report before starting the work. Classifying: produced for a technical purpose or by specialists.

L'informe és massa tècnic per a un públic no especialista.

The report is too technical for a non-specialist audience. Qualitative: full of specialized detail.

This context-sensitive minimal pair is central to the system. Degree marking does not break the rule; it signals that tècnic has shifted from category membership to a property that admits degrees. The same mechanism permits un debat molt polític when polític means “highly shaped by political maneuvering,” not merely “related to politics.”

Coordination favors parallel semantic levels

Two relational adjectives coordinate naturally when they classify the same noun along comparable alternatives or domains.

El conveni regula els serveis mèdics i farmacèutics del centre.

The agreement regulates the center's medical and pharmaceutical services.

La revista publica recerca lingüística i literària en català.

The journal publishes linguistic and literary research in Catalan.

A relational adjective and a qualitative adjective can both modify one noun, but flat coordination often sounds forced because they answer different questions. Una reforma educativa ambiciosa means “an ambitious reform in education”; neutral prose prefers this hierarchical structure to una reforma educativa i ambiciosa.

There are contexts where a writer deliberately coordinates unlike properties for rhetoric—una decisió política i profundament injusta. That is grammatical, especially when i highlights a second judgment, but it is a discourse choice rather than the default organization of classifiers.

💡
Test what each adjective answers. If both answer “what type?”, coordination is likely. If one answers “what type?” and another “what is it like?”, keep the classifier closer to the noun and the evaluation outside it.

Technical vocabulary and lexical learning

Relational adjectives are especially dense in (formal), (academic), scientific, legal, and administrative registers: pressió arterial, dret laboral, anàlisi sintàctica, cèl·lula nerviosa, normativa europea. Their meaning is often narrower than the corresponding everyday noun, so learn the entire term rather than translating its parts independently.

L'estudi compara les polítiques sanitàries europees actuals amb diversos models nord-americans.

The study compares current European health policies with several North American models. (academic)

This sentence displays agreement on several words: les, polítiques, sanitàries, europees, and actuals are feminine plural; diversos, models, and nord-americans are masculine plural.

Technical cognates do not necessarily keep their Spanish gender. Catalan anàlisi is feminine, unlike Spanish análisis, and its relational adjective follows that Catalan gender.

L'article inclou una anàlisi sintàctica detallada de tres construccions.

The article includes a detailed syntactic analysis of three constructions.

Actual is a misleading English cognate: Catalan actual means “current,” not “real.” “The actual policy” may be la política real or la política de debò, depending on context; la política actual means the policy in force now.

The broad syntax is shared across Catalan standards, though institutions may prefer different technical terms. When presenting a single regional model, keep neighboring paradigms coherent: Central aquestes polítiques meves versus (regional: Valencian) estes polítiques meues. A technical adjective does not license a hybrid such as estes polítiques meves.

Common Mistakes

1. Placing every classifying adjective before the noun like English.

Han ampliat el ferroviari servei regional.

Marked and unsuitable as neutral prose — the relational adjective normally follows servei.

Han ampliat el servei ferroviari regional.

They have expanded the regional rail service. This is the neutral order.

2. Adding degree to a strictly classifying meaning.

❌ Aquesta taxa és molt municipal.

Incorrect for ‘this is a municipal tax’ — administrative category is not a degree.

✅ Aquesta taxa és municipal.

This tax is municipal.

3. Flattening classifier and evaluation unnecessarily.

El parlament debat una reforma laboral i polèmica.

Awkward neutral structure — laboral classifies the reform, while polèmica evaluates it.

El parlament debat una reforma laboral polèmica.

Parliament is debating a controversial labor reform. This is the neutral hierarchy.

4. Misreading actual as English actual.

❌ Aquesta és la normativa actual, no l'esborrany.

Incorrect if the intended meaning is ‘the real regulation’; actual means current.

✅ Aquesta és la normativa real, no l'esborrany.

This is the actual regulation, not the draft.

5. Mixing Central and Valencian paradigms around the adjective.

❌ Estes dues polítiques energètiques meves són diferents.

Inconsistent as a single-variety model — estes is Valencian and meves is Central.

✅ Aquestes dues polítiques energètiques meves són diferents.

These two energy policies of mine are different. Central standard baseline.

Key Takeaways

Relational adjectives classify rather than measure. They agree normally, usually follow the noun, resist degree in their strict classifying reading, and sit close to the noun before an outer qualitative evaluation. Predicative or graded uses are possible when the context contrasts categories or shifts the adjective toward a genuine property; recognizing that semantic shift is more useful than memorizing a list of forbidden forms.
