Compound Nouns

Catalan compound nouns range from single written words such as aiguamoll to hyphenated forms such as para-sol and multiword units such as vagó restaurant and sala d'espera. Their grammar becomes manageable once you identify the head: the component that tells you what kind of thing the whole expression denotes.

The hard part is that spelling and plural formation depend on how completely a sequence has become one lexical unit. There is no honest rule that derives every established spelling from meaning alone; when a compound is unfamiliar, a current Catalan dictionary is part of the answer.

Four productive patterns

PatternSingularPluralWhere number appears
solid lexical compoundl'aiguamollels aiguamollsat the right edge
hyphenated lexical compoundel para-solels para-solsat the right edge
noun + classifying nounel vagó restaurantels vagons restaurantnormally on the first, head noun
noun + prepositional complementla sala d'esperales sales d'esperaon the head before the preposition

Han restaurat dos aiguamolls costaners i tres antics molins de vent.

They have restored two coastal wetlands and three old windmills.

Aiguamoll behaves as one orthographic word, so its plural comes at the end. In molí de vent, the head molí is pluralized and the classifying complement remains de vent.

The head controls gender and agreement

In transparent multiword compounds, the head is usually the first noun. A vagó restaurant is a kind of vagó, a paraula clau is a kind of paraula, and a ciutat jardí is a kind of ciutat. The first noun therefore controls the article, plural, and outside adjectives.

Aquestes dues paraules clau noves apareixen als primers paràgrafs.

These two new key words appear in the opening paragraphs.

Aquestes, dues, paraules, and noves are feminine plural. Clau classifies the words and normally remains unchanged. The phrase is not built by making every adjacent noun agree mechanically.

Els vagons restaurant renovats ja tornen a circular.

The renovated dining cars are running again.

Here masculine plural els, vagons, and renovats follow the head vagó. The classifying noun restaurant stays singular in the neutral standard pattern.

With single-word compounds, however, gender belongs to the compound as a lexical whole and is not always predictable from the final component: el paraigua, el rentaplats, la llevaneu. Learn the article with the word.

💡
Use the “kind of” test with multiword compounds: a sala d'espera is a kind of sala, so sala controls una sala petita / unes sales petites. The words after it narrow the class; they do not replace the head.

Solid and hyphenated lexical compounds

Once two bases form one orthographic word, the compound normally inflects at its right edge like another word: aiguamoll/aiguamolls, maldecap/maldecaps, capgròs/capgrossos. A hyphen does not create two independent noun phrases: para-sol/para-sols, penya-segat/penya-segats.

Hem comprat un para-sol blau i dues cadires plegables per a la platja.

We bought a blue sunshade and two folding chairs for the beach.

Després de la tempesta, els para-sols vermells han aparegut a l'altre extrem de la platja.

After the storm, the red sunshades turned up at the other end of the beach.

The adjective describes the whole object and agrees with masculine para-sol. Do not give each component its own article or adjective.

Current spelling uses hyphens in defined sets, including compounds whose first component ends in a vowel and whose next begins with r, s, or x: para-xocs, penya-segat. Hyphens also preserve readability in forms such as nord-americà. Other lexicalized compounds are closed: aiguamoll, maldecap, rentaplats. English spelling—open “dining car,” hyphenated “sun-dried,” closed “wetland”—does not predict Catalan spelling. The full orthographic inventory appears under hyphens in compounds.

💡
A space or hyphen does not by itself tell you where the plural goes. First decide whether you have one lexical word (para-sol → para-sols) or a multiword compound with a left-hand head (vagó restaurant → vagons restaurant).

Verb + noun compounds

A productive Catalan pattern combines a verb stem with a noun: rentar + plats → rentaplats, gratar + cel → gratacel, parar + llamps → parallamps. The internal noun may already be singular or plural in the lexical singular. Some resulting forms are externally invariable because singular and plural look alike.

Lexical singularPlural phraseComment
el gratacelels gratacelsthe whole word gains final -s
el para-solels para-solsright-edge plural after the hyphen
el rentaplatsels rentaplatssame written form in both numbers
el parallampsels parallampssame written form in both numbers

El rentaplats nou és silenciós, però els rentaplats antics gastaven menys aigua.

The new dishwasher is quiet, but the old dishwashers used less water.

Only the determiner and adjective reveal number in el rentaplats nou / els rentaplats antics. Spanish rascacielos may tempt learners to invent rascacels, but standard Catalan has gratacel / gratacels. Close Romance compounds are not word-for-word templates.

The singular/plural shape inside verb–noun compounds is partly lexical. Compare gratacel with parallamps. The difference reflects how the internal relation has become conventional; memorize the dictionary form rather than “correcting” an internal -s.

Compounds with prepositions

Multiword lexical units often use de: sala d'espera, cap d'estació, molí de vent, ull de poll. The preposition links the head to a purpose, object, location, or characteristic. The head pluralizes; the complement normally stays as established.

Les sales d'espera petites de l'estació són plenes a aquesta hora.

The station's small waiting rooms are full at this hour.

Els caps d'estació nous començaran dilluns.

The new stationmasters will start on Monday.

The plural is sales d'espera, not sala d'esperes, because there are several rooms, not several acts of waiting. This semantic head relation also explains adjective placement: sales d'espera petites neutrally describes the rooms. English normally puts “small” first.

When both nouns are equally referential

In a subordinate noun–noun compound, the second noun merely classifies the first and normally stays singular: vagons restaurant, camions cisterna, ciutats dormitori. In a coordinate compound, both components can be equally referential and both may pluralize: berenars sopars are events that function as both afternoon snacks and dinners.

L'associació organitza dos berenars sopars solidaris cada setembre.

The association organizes two charity afternoon-snack-and-dinner events every September.

Some sequences fluctuate, especially when speakers reinterpret the second noun as an agreeing classifier. With clau in this use, paraules clau is the form generally maintained in formal registers; paraules claus also occurs through agreement. The existence of such pairs is exactly why dictionaries and register matter: the syntax gives a strong default, not a guarantee for every lexicalized expression.

Compare this minimal pair:

El tren té un vagó restaurant molt ampli.

The train has a very spacious dining car. (restaurant classifies the car)

El restaurant ocupa un antic vagó molt ampli.

The restaurant occupies a very spacious old railcar. (restaurant is now the head of the clause)

Reversing the nouns does not preserve the compound. Head direction determines reference, agreement, and what the phrase is fundamentally about.

Regional consistency

The main compound patterns belong to contemporary standard Catalan across regions. Lexical preferences can vary—one area may favor a different ordinary word—but do not manufacture regional morphology. Keep surrounding paradigms coherent: Central aquest para-sol / aquests para-sols; (regional: Valencian) este para-sol / estos para-sols. A mixed pair such as aquest para-sol / estos para-sols confuses systems.

Common Mistakes

1. Pluralizing the classifying noun instead of the head.

❌ Han tancat dos vagó restaurants.

Incorrect — vagó is the head and must carry the plural; restaurant normally stays singular.

✅ Han tancat dos vagons restaurant.

They have closed two dining cars.

2. Copying a Spanish compound.

❌ Des del mirador es veuen molts rascacels.

Incorrect Spanish-based formation — the Catalan noun is gratacel.

✅ Des del mirador es veuen molts gratacels.

Many skyscrapers can be seen from the viewpoint.

3. Giving an internal complement its own article.

❌ Ens trobarem a la sala de l'espera principal.

Incorrect — the lexical unit is sala d'espera; only the whole noun phrase is determined.

✅ Ens trobarem a la sala d'espera principal.

We'll meet in the main waiting room.

4. Copying English adjective order.

❌ Han inaugurat una nova petita sala d'espera.

Unnatural neutral order — this copies an English stack of descriptive adjectives before the compound.

✅ Han inaugurat una sala d'espera nova i petita.

They have opened a new, small waiting room.

5. Mixing Central and Valencian demonstratives.

❌ Aquest gratacel i estos blocs tenen la mateixa alçària.

Inconsistent as one neutral paradigm — aquest is Central/general and estos is Valencian.

✅ Aquest gratacel i aquests blocs tenen la mateixa alçària.

This skyscraper and these apartment blocks are the same height. (Central baseline)

Key Takeaways

Find the head before deciding gender, plural, and agreement. Single-word and hyphenated lexical compounds normally pluralize at the right edge; transparent noun–noun and noun–preposition compounds normally pluralize their first, head noun. Spelling and some internal number patterns are lexical, so use productive rules as defaults and verify unfamiliar compounds.
