Irregular and Double Plurals

Catalan plurals are usually predictable, but several frequent classes allow two standard forms, restore a consonant hidden in the singular, or develop a conventional plural meaning. The difficulty is genuinely lexical: knowing that -s is the default does not tell you whether a particular speaker will prefer texts or textos, nor does English tell you that “dessert” is normally les postres.

The key distinction is between form and reference. Two plural forms may name exactly the same things, while one ordinary-looking plural may have a specialized meaning. In every case, the determiner and modifiers must agree with the noun phrase that speakers actually use.

This page concentrates on variation and lexical exceptions. Nouns whose singular and plural are identical belong on the invariable nouns page.

El contracte descriu un risc greu, però l'informe enumera tres riscos addicionals.

The contract describes one serious risk, but the report lists three additional risks.

Aquests dos assajos nous seran oberts al públic, i els assaigs de la setmana passada també ho van ser.

These two new rehearsals will be open to the public, and last week's rehearsals were too.

The second example deliberately shows both accepted plurals of assaig. It does not contrast two meanings: assajos and assaigs can refer to the same rehearsals, trials, or essays. In polished prose, needless switching can distract the reader, so select one variant consistently unless you are discussing variation itself.

💡
A double plural is not normally a semantic pair. Texts/textos and desigs/desitjos differ in form and distribution, not in basic denotation.

Masculines in -sc, -sp, -st, and -xt

Masculine nouns and adjectives ending in -sc, -sp, -st, or -xt can form the plural either by adding -s or by adding -os: boscs/boscos, gesps/gespos, gusts/gustos, manifests/manifestos, pretexts/pretextos. The longer forms are widespread in the Central baseline and often easier to pronounce. The shorter forms are equally standard; their frequency varies by word, region, and style.

Els textos jurídics exposen els riscos previstos i els costos estimats.

The legal texts set out the anticipated risks and the estimated costs.

Els texts jurídics exposen els riscs previstos i els costs estimats.

The legal texts set out the anticipated risks and the estimated costs. (Same meaning, using the short standard plurals)

Feminine nouns are not automatically part of this double pattern. La post has plural les posts, for example. Gender therefore matters before you generalize from the last letters.

Agreement extends beyond the noun. In aquests dos textos tècnics revisats, the demonstrative, numeral context, noun, and both adjectives jointly establish masculine plural reference.

Aquests dos textos tècnics revisats expliquen diversos procediments jurídics complexos.

These two revised technical texts explain several complex legal procedures.

Masculines stressed on final -ig: short and expanded stems

Masculine nouns with stress on final -ig have a short plural in -igs and often an expanded plural in -jos or -tjos. The expanded stem is visible in related words: passeig → passejos beside passejar; desig → desitjos beside desitjar.

Després de dos assajos llargs, els actors van fer un passeig curt per aclarir-se.

After two long rehearsals, the actors took a short walk to clear their heads.

There is no safe instruction to replace every -ig with either -j- or -tj-. The lexical family reveals the appropriate spelling, and a dictionary settles unfamiliar cases. This is one of those places where honest memorization is better than a false universal rule.

💡
For an expanded -ig plural, use the related verb as a spelling clue: passejar → passejos, but desitjar → desitjos. Still verify unfamiliar words, because the alternation is lexical.

Restored n and regional standards

Some nouns ending in unstressed -e have plural variants that restore an older stem-final n. Central Catalan normally uses homes, joves, marges, orfes, and termes. (regional: Valencian, Northwestern, Eivissan, Alguerese, and parts of the Camp de Tarragona) forms such as hòmens, jóvens, màrgens, òrfens, and térmens remain alive; hòmens and jóvens are especially established in standard Valencian.

Estos hòmens jóvens treballen en dos projectes europeus.

These young men work on two European projects. (regional: Valencian)

Aquests homes joves treballen en dos projectes europeus.

These young men work on two European projects. (Central baseline)

Notice that a regional paradigm is a package: Valencian estos hòmens jóvens is internally coherent; Central aquests homes joves is too. A hybrid assembled word by word does not represent a neutral “best of both” standard.

Plurals with a conventional meaning

Some plural expressions are not merely several instances of a singular. Les postres is the ordinary Catalan noun phrase for the dessert course and is feminine plural. This is a particularly treacherous Spanish cognate: Spanish el postre is masculine singular, so els postres imports the wrong gender and number analysis.

Other conventional plurals include les ulleres “glasses,” les tisores “scissors,” els afores “the outskirts,” and les noces “a wedding.” English may use a singular translation for some of them, but Catalan agreement follows the Catalan noun.

Les postres casolanes ja són a taula, i les tisores grosses són al segon calaix.

The homemade dessert is already on the table, and the large scissors are in the second drawer.

Viuen als afores tranquils de la ciutat i hi celebraran les noces.

They live on the quiet outskirts of the city and will celebrate their wedding there.

There are also ordinary plurals whose context encourages a specialized reading. Aigua is a mass noun in Necessito aigua, while les aigües termals identifies springs or waters as a geographically or chemically differentiated set. The plural does not mechanically mean “several waters”; it packages distinguishable bodies or types.

Position and interpretation

Plural morphology and adjective order solve different problems. Compare diversos textos “several texts” with textos diversos “varied or diverse texts.” The same masculine plural forms occur, but prenominal diversos quantifies whereas postnominal diversos characterizes.

He consultat diversos textos antics i textos moderns molt diversos.

I consulted several old texts and very diverse modern texts.

English places many modifiers before the noun, but Catalan neutral descriptive order is often noun + adjective. Do not move tècnics, antics, or revisats before the noun automatically.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating one accepted double plural as the only correct one.

❌ Texts és incorrecte; només es pot dir textos.

Incorrect claim — both texts and textos are standard plurals of text.

✅ En aquest informe farem servir textos de manera coherent.

In this report we will use textos consistently.

2. Inventing an -ig plural without the lexical stem alternation.

❌ Els desijos dels infants eren ben senzills.

Incorrect — the expanded plural of desig is desitjos; desigs is also standard.

✅ Els desitjos dels infants eren ben senzills.

The children's wishes were quite simple.

3. Copying the gender of a Spanish cognate.

❌ Hem demanat els postres típics de la casa.

Incorrect — Catalan uses the feminine plural les postres.

✅ Hem demanat les postres típiques de la casa.

We ordered the restaurant's typical dessert.

4. Copying English modifier position and bare generic reference.

❌ Tècnics textos expliquen riscos.

Unnatural and underdetermined — neutral Catalan normally places descriptive tècnics after the noun and uses an article for a generic class.

✅ Els textos tècnics expliquen els riscos.

Technical texts explain the risks.

Key Takeaways

Learn double plurals as accepted pairs, not as rival meanings: riscs/riscos, texts/textos, assaigs/assajos. Let lexical families guide -j- versus -tj-, label restored-n forms regionally, and memorize conventional plurals such as les postres. The form of the noun matters, but determiner, agreement, word order, and discourse decide how the full phrase is understood.
