Invariable Nouns

Most Catalan nouns change visibly in the plural, but a useful group does not: un llapis / dos llapis, aquest dilluns / aquests dilluns. Invariable means that the noun's written form stays the same, not that the whole noun phrase ignores number. Articles, demonstratives, adjectives, and the verb still reveal whether the reference is singular or plural.

English speakers may expect every count noun to acquire plural -s. Spanish speakers face a different trap: a familiar-looking Catalan noun may not take the Spanish plural they expect. The safest approach is to read the whole phrase as an agreement system rather than trying to make the noun carry every distinction alone.

The agreement pattern

The noun remains unchanged in the central column, while every variable neighbor follows the intended number.

Noun typeSingular phrasePlural phrase
Weekday in -saquest dilluns tranquilaquests dilluns tranquils
Ordinary noun in -isun llapis vermelldos llapis vermells
Learned noun in -usel virus nouels virus nous
Compound ending in a plural formaquest rentaplats silenciósaquests rentaplats silenciosos

Aquest llapis blau és meu, però aquells dos llapis vermells són teus.

This blue pencil is mine, but those two red pencils are yours.

Aquests tres rentaplats nous són més silenciosos que l'antic.

These three new dishwashers are quieter than the old one.

The second sentence displays number through aquests, nous, són, and silenciosos, while tres independently establishes a plural quantity. The noun rentaplats itself contributes no visible singular–plural contrast. In English, “dishwasher” changes; in Catalan, the surrounding words can do all the disambiguating work.

💡
An invariable noun is not an invariable phrase. Look left to the determiner and right to adjectives or the verb: el tipus adequat becomes els tipus adequats.

Weekdays: five invariable forms and two regular ones

The weekday names dilluns, dimarts, dimecres, dijous, and divendres end in -s and keep the same form in the plural. Dissabte and diumenge are regular: dissabtes, diumenges.

Aquest dilluns tinc hora al dentista, però els altres dilluns treballo des de casa.

This Monday I have a dentist appointment, but on the other Mondays I work from home.

Els divendres tranquils d'hivern contrasten amb els dissabtes atrafegats de desembre.

Quiet winter Fridays contrast with busy Saturdays in December.

Article choice also changes the time reference. Bare Dilluns comencem normally locates one upcoming or contextually identified Monday: “We start on Monday.” The definite plural in Els dilluns comencem d'hora creates a habitual series: “On Mondays we start early.” The noun is identical, but article, verb, and context produce different readings.

Dilluns obrirem a les nou; els dilluns, però, normalment obrim a les vuit.

On Monday we'll open at nine; on Mondays, though, we normally open at eight.

💡
With weekdays, do not equate absence of a plural ending with absence of plurality. Els dilluns is plural because els presents a recurring set; adding another ending to dilluns is impossible.

Frequent lexical classes

Several common nouns ending in unstressed -s or -x are invariable. Learn them with a singular and a plural frame, because the final letters alone do not predict every word.

MeaningSingularPlural
pencilel llapisels llapis
atlasl'atlesels atles
typeel tipusels tipus
virusel virusels virus
cavity; cariesla càriesles càries
thoraxel tòraxels tòrax

La dentista m'ha trobat una càries petita i dues càries més profundes.

The dentist found one small cavity and two deeper cavities.

The Spanish cognate is misleading in llapis: Spanish has lápiz / lápices, but Catalan has llapis / llapis, never llapisos. English “virus/viruses” likewise encourages an extra ending that Catalan does not use. There is no productive rule that lets you strip or add letters safely to every learned noun; lexical knowledge matters.

Some nouns in -s are not invariable. Stressed masculine nouns frequently form a plural in -os: mes / mesos, país / països, gas / gasos. Compare the regular plural patterns and irregular and double plurals instead of treating final -s as a universal signal.

Invariable compounds

Many verb–noun compounds already end in what looks like a plural object and remain unchanged: el rentaplats / els rentaplats “dishwasher(s),” el llevataps / els llevataps “corkscrew(s),” el parallamps / els parallamps “lightning rod(s),” el comptagotes / els comptagotes “dropper(s),” and el trencaclosques / els trencaclosques “puzzle(s).” Number belongs to the compound as a whole; speakers do not pluralize its internal pieces again.

Hem comprat dos llevataps bons i un comptagotes nou per a la farmaciola.

We bought two good corkscrews and a new dropper for the first-aid kit.

Els trencaclosques difícils tenen totes les peces dins de capses separades.

The difficult puzzles have all their pieces in separate boxes.

Do not assume that every compound is invariable. Paraigua has plural paraigües, and gratacel has gratacels. What matters is the established form of the compound, not a broad English category such as “compound noun.”

Determiners, modifier position, and meaning

An invariable form can still combine with the full determiner system: un tipus, aquest tipus, cap tipus, dos tipus, els mateixos tipus. A bare plural often introduces an indefinite quantity, while a definite plural identifies a known set.

Necessitem atles actualitzats per a l'aula, però encara no hem triat els atles que comprarem.

We need updated atlases for the classroom, but we have not yet chosen the atlases we will buy.

In careful Catalan, the standard spelling is atles in both numbers; the first bare plural presents an unspecified quantity, while els atles points to the eventual selected set.

Adjective order contributes meaning too. Un nou tipus de bateria usually means “an additional or newly introduced kind of battery”; un tipus nou de bateria describes a kind that is itself new. Both orders are possible, and agreement remains visible in the plural: nous tipus versus tipus nous. Copying English adjective order blindly loses this contrast.

Regional demonstratives do not alter the noun. Use Central aquest tipus / aquests tipus as the baseline here. (regional: Valencian) este tipus / estos tipus is a coherent Valencian paradigm. Do not mix aquest with estos as though they were singular and plural members of one neutral paradigm.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an English- or Spanish-shaped plural to an invariable noun.

❌ He comprat tres llapisos de colors.

Incorrect — llapis is invariable; Catalan does not use Spanish-like lápices or an invented llapisos.

✅ He comprat tres llapis de colors.

I bought three colored pencils.

2. Leaving agreement singular because the noun has not changed.

❌ Aquest virus nou són molt contagiosos.

Incorrect — the plural verb and adjective require a plural determiner too.

✅ Aquests virus nous són molt contagiosos.

These new viruses are very contagious.

3. Copying English article distribution with habitual weekdays.

❌ Dilluns són tranquils a l'oficina.

Incorrect for a general statement about Mondays — Catalan uses the definite plural article.

✅ Els dilluns són tranquils a l'oficina.

Mondays are quiet at the office.

4. Treating every final -s noun as invariable.

❌ Hem passat tres mes fora del país.

Incorrect — mes has the regular plural mesos.

✅ Hem passat tres mesos fora del país.

We spent three months outside the country.

Key Takeaways

With an invariable noun, number moves outward: determiners, adjectives, verbs, numerals, and context do the visible work. Learn frequent items as paired phrases—el llapis / els llapis, aquest dilluns / aquests dilluns—and remember that reference, habituality, description, and regional style are properties of the whole noun phrase, not of one ending.
