Catalan noun endings often give a strong clue to gender. Abstract nouns in -tat are feminine, for example, while nouns formed with -isme and -ment are masculine. These patterns reduce memorization, but they are tendencies and productive suffixes—not a machine that can determine every noun from its final letters.
The honest rule is this: use a reliable suffix when you recognize one, but learn the article with every unfamiliar noun. Some gender assignments are historical and arbitrary, and Spanish or English cannot decide them for you.
A compact guide to the main endings
| Ending or suffix | Usual gender | Examples | Important warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unstressed -a | Usually feminine | la casa, la finestra, la taula | el dia, el mapa, el problema are masculine |
| Abstract -ió, especially -ció/-sió | Usually feminine | la reunió, la decisió, la tradició | l'avió, el camió, el guió are masculine lexical nouns |
| -tat, -etat, -itat | Feminine | la ciutat, la veritat, la possibilitat | Recognize the suffix, not merely the last three letters: el comtat |
| -isme | Masculine | el turisme, el realisme, el feminisme | The whole suffix matters |
| Derivational -ment | Masculine | el pensament, el moviment, el naixement | la ment is a separate feminine word, not the suffix |
| Most other final consonants | No safe prediction | el carrer, la flor; el tren, la nit | Learn the article |
The compact paradigm below shows how the noun's gender then spreads to surrounding words:
| Pattern | Singular phrase | Plural phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine -a exception | aquest problema greu | aquests problemes greus |
| Feminine -ió | una decisió important | unes decisions importants |
| Feminine -tat | la universitat pública | les universitats públiques |
| Masculine -isme | aquest anglicisme freqüent | aquests anglicismes freqüents |
| Masculine -ment | un pensament crític | uns pensaments crítics |
Final -a: a strong clue with famous exceptions
An unstressed final -a strongly suggests feminine gender: la cadira, la porta, la llengua, la setmana. This is why feminine forms of many person nouns also end in -a: amiga, veïna, mestra. But the ending is not exclusively feminine.
La finestra petita de la cuina dona al pati interior.
The small kitchen window faces the inner courtyard.
El problema més urgent és que hem perdut el mapa de la zona.
The most urgent problem is that we have lost the map of the area.
The frequent masculine exceptions include el dia, el mapa, el planeta, el tema, el programa, el poema, el sistema, and el problema. Many learned words in -ma came through Greek, which helps explain the cluster, but etymology is not a practical rule for every new word. Memorize these common phrases.
Abstract -ió, -ció, and -sió
Nouns denoting actions, processes, or results and formed in -ió—especially -ció and -sió—are normally feminine: la informació, l'organització, la traducció, la discussió, la decisió. Their adjectives and determiners are feminine too.
La nova organització publicarà una decisió definitiva aquesta setmana.
The new organization will publish a final decision this week.
Les reunions extraordinàries començaran després de les votacions.
The extraordinary meetings will begin after the votes.
Do not reduce the rule to “every written word ending in -ió is feminine.” L'avió, el camió, and el guió are masculine. They are lexical nouns whose ending happens to have the same letters, not members of the productive abstract-noun pattern.
-tat, -etat, and -itat are feminine
The abstract suffix family -tat, -etat, and -itat produces feminine nouns: la llibertat, la societat, la novetat, la igualtat, la qualitat, la responsabilitat. This pattern is extremely dependable when the suffix is genuinely present.
La responsabilitat compartida ha millorat la qualitat del servei.
Shared responsibility has improved the quality of the service.
Aquesta ciutat petita té dues universitats públiques.
This small city has two public universities.
El comtat is masculine because its structure and history are different: it is not the abstract suffix -tat attached to com-. Looking only at the last letters hides that distinction. There is no shortcut for every apparent exception.
-isme and -ment are masculine suffixes
Names of doctrines, movements, systems, and characteristic phenomena in -isme are masculine: el budisme, el modernisme, el bilingüisme, el turisme. Deverbal nouns in -ment are also masculine: el pagament, el naixement, el creixement, el funcionament.
El turisme sostenible pot afavorir el desenvolupament local.
Sustainable tourism can support local development.
El naixement del moviment va coincidir amb un canvi polític important.
The birth of the movement coincided with an important political change.
The noun la ment is feminine and means “mind.” It is not a zero-length base plus the suffix -ment. This contrast shows why morphology matters: a suffix carries a pattern, while a coincidental sequence of letters may not.
Consonant-final nouns must be learned
Outside productive suffixes, a final consonant is a poor guide. Compare el carrer with la flor, el pont with la nit, and el sol with la sal. The gender belongs to the lexical noun and triggers agreement throughout its phrase.
La flor groga és al costat del pont vell.
The yellow flower is next to the old bridge.
Gender can even distinguish two meanings of the same spelling:
Després de córrer, tenia el pols accelerat i les sabates cobertes de pols.
After running, his pulse was racing and his shoes were covered in dust.
El pols is “pulse,” while la pols is “dust.” Context and agreement jointly identify the intended noun. This is more than an ending exception; it is a lexical contrast.
False friends across languages
Closely related words can differ in gender across languages. Catalan la síndrome is feminine, while Spanish normally has masculine el síndrome. Catalan la dent contrasts with Spanish el diente. English supplies no overt gender clue for either “syndrome” or “tooth.”
La síndrome és poc freqüent, però aquesta pacient en presenta tots els símptomes.
The syndrome is uncommon, but this patient shows all its symptoms.
Use another Romance language as a mnemonic only after checking Catalan. Guessing confidently from Spanish is one of the fastest ways to fossilize article and adjective errors.
Adjective position may alter interpretation
Agreement is required whether the adjective precedes or follows the noun, but position can change its meaning. Compare this context-sensitive pair:
Això és una simple possibilitat, no pas una decisió definitiva.
That is merely a possibility, not a final decision.
Busquem una possibilitat simple que tothom pugui entendre.
We are looking for a simple possibility that everyone can understand.
Before the noun, simple often means “mere”; after it, the adjective more literally means “uncomplicated.” English frequently places both uses before the noun, so word-for-word order loses the Catalan contrast. See adjective position for the broader system.
Regional consistency
These suffix patterns belong to the shared standard language. Regional demonstratives do not alter noun gender, but their own paradigms should remain consistent: Central aquest problema / aquesta possibilitat; (regional: Valencian) este problema / esta possibilitat. Do not mix pieces into an artificial paradigm.
Some individual nouns show genuine gender variation. El mar is the most neutral general form; la mar is traditional, (literary), and also alive in several coastal varieties, including Valencian and Balearic usage. Such lexical cases must be learned individually and are treated in gender variation across standards.
Common Mistakes
1. Making every noun in -a feminine.
❌ La problema principal continua sense resoldre.
Incorrect — problema is masculine.
✅ El problema principal continua sense resoldre.
The main problem remains unresolved.
2. Making every written -ió noun feminine.
❌ L'avió nova surt a les sis.
Incorrect — avió is masculine.
✅ L'avió nou surt a les sis.
The new plane leaves at six.
3. Treating -ment as feminine because la ment is feminine.
❌ La pagament mensual ha pujat.
Incorrect — the derivational suffix -ment produces a masculine noun here.
✅ El pagament mensual ha pujat.
The monthly payment has gone up.
4. Copying Spanish gender.
❌ El síndrome és difícil de diagnosticar.
Incorrect in standard Catalan — síndrome is feminine.
✅ La síndrome és difícil de diagnosticar.
The syndrome is difficult to diagnose.
5. Putting every adjective before the noun.
❌ Hem reservat una tranquil·la habitació amb balcó.
Marked and unnatural for a neutral description copied from English.
✅ Hem reservat una habitació tranquil·la amb balcó.
We booked a quiet room with a balcony.
Key Takeaways
Final -a is a strong feminine clue, abstract -ió and -tat nouns are usually feminine, and productive -isme and -ment nouns are masculine. The pattern belongs to the suffix, not merely to the last letters. With other consonant-final nouns—and whenever a frequent exception appears—learn the article rather than guessing.
