Prepositions Selected by Nouns

A noun can take a complement that identifies a relative, participant, topic, content, target, or domain: la germana d'en Pau, la construcció del pont, el dret a l'habitatge, la confiança en l'equip. Catalan most often uses de, but many nouns select a, en, amb, or per, and two phrases can coexist with different roles. English noun compounds and possessives often hide relationships that Catalan must spell out; see compound nouns for compounds that instead behave as lexical units.

The challenge is not merely choosing a preposition. You must also decide what the complement means and what it has scope over. Unlabelled uses below are neutral contemporary standard Catalan.

Three broad kinds of noun complement

Noun typeWhat the complement suppliesExample
relational nounthe other participant in an inherent relationla mare de l'Èlia; el final del carrer
eventive nounan agent, theme, recipient, or goal of an underlying eventla traducció de la novel·la al català
content nounwhat an idea, fear, claim, or possibility is aboutla idea de compartir el taller
💡
When a noun comes from a verb, reconstruct the underlying event. In el lliurament del paquet a la clienta, someone lliura el paquet a la clienta: de introduces the delivered theme and a the recipient.

Relational nouns and de

Kinship, part–whole relations, origin, authorship, possession, and classification commonly use de: el germà de la Joana, la porta de l'edifici, un poema de Maria-Mercè Marçal, una tassa de ceràmica. English may use 's, an of phrase, or a noun placed directly before another noun; Catalan normally marks the relation overtly.

La germana del veí que viu al tercer treballa al centre de salut.

The sister of the neighbor who lives on the third floor works at the health center.

The relative que viu al tercer most naturally modifies el veí, the noun directly before it. If the sister lives there, reorder or repeat the referent: La germana del veí treballa al centre de salut i viu al tercer. Word order helps determine scope.

Han restaurat la façana de l'escola i les finestres de la biblioteca.

They've restored the school façade and the library windows.

Do not treat every de phrase as possession. In una tassa de ceràmica, de ceràmica gives material; in una tassa de la Mercè, it identifies an owner or associated person; in una tassa de cafè, it identifies content or measure. Context and the head noun determine the relation.

Eventive nouns: recovering the participants

Nouns such as construcció, destrucció, arribada, visita, lliurament, resposta, traducció, crítica evoke events. Their complements correspond to participants of the related verb, but de can encode more than one role and therefore create ambiguity.

El lliurament dels medicaments als centres rurals començarà dilluns.

Delivery of the medicines to rural health centers will begin Monday.

La traducció de la novel·la al català va durar gairebé un any.

The translation of the novel into Catalan took almost a year.

In both, de introduces the theme affected by the event and a introduces a goal or recipient. The pair is not interchangeable: la traducció al català de la novel·la is possible, but placing de la novel·la last may briefly make readers wonder what it modifies.

La visita de la metgessa may mean the visit made by the doctor; la visita a la metgessa means a visit whose goal is the doctor. This is a genuine minimal contrast:

La visita de la metgessa va tranquil·litzar tota la família.

The doctor's visit reassured the whole family. (the doctor visited)

La visita a la metgessa va durar només deu minuts.

The visit to the doctor lasted only ten minutes. (someone visited the doctor)

With some eventive nouns, de can identify either agent or affected participant. La crítica de la directora can be criticism voiced by the principal or criticism directed at her. Clarify with a second phrase or a finite clause: la crítica de la directora al projecte; les crítiques contra la directora; el fet que la directora critiqués el projecte.

La crítica de la directora al nou protocol, que molts consideraven massa rígid, va obrir el debat.

The principal's criticism of the new protocol, which many considered too rigid, opened the debate.

The comma-delimited relative modifies el nou protocol. The two participant phrases—agent de la directora, target al nou protocol—make the event structure explicit.

Nouns selecting a

Common a patterns include accés a, dret a, resposta a, reacció a, resistència a, referència a, invitació a and solució a. The preposition marks a target, stimulus, or corresponding item.

Tothom té dret a una informació clara i accés als documents que l'afecten.

Everyone has a right to clear information and access to the documents that affect them.

Encara no hem rebut cap resposta a la pregunta sobre els terminis.

We still haven't received an answer to the question about the deadlines.

Contract a + el/els: accés al portal, resposta als dubtes. English often says “the answer to the question,” which happens to align, but Spanish or English cannot be used to predict other nouns one by one.

De and a in the same noun phrase

With eventive nouns, de often identifies what moves, changes, or is acted on, while a identifies a recipient, target, or result. This division is especially clear in el lliurament de X a Y, la traducció de X a Y, l'adaptació de X a Y.

L'adaptació de la novel·la al cinema conservarà el final original.

The adaptation of the novel for film will preserve the original ending.

La cessió de l'espai a les entitats juvenils s'aprovarà al ple de dijous.

The transfer of the space to youth organizations will be approved at Thursday's council meeting.

Do not use a chain of bare English-style nouns such as projecte adaptació mercat. Catalan signals the relationships with prepositions and articles.

Content nouns: de + noun or infinitive, que + finite clause

Nouns expressing an idea, fear, need, possibility, certainty, or hope can take a de phrase or infinitive: la idea d'un canvi, la possibilitat de tornar, la por de perdre-ho, la necessitat d'actuar. If the content is a finite clause introduced by que, standard Catalan normally omits de: la possibilitat que tornin, not la possibilitat de que tornin.

La possibilitat de compartir el local ens permetria reduir les despeses.

The possibility of sharing the premises would allow us to reduce costs.

Hi ha la possibilitat que el local quedi lliure abans de l'estiu.

There is a possibility that the premises will become available before summer.

The subjunctive quedi reflects the nonasserted possibility. The preposition pattern and the mood do different jobs: syntax links the content to the noun, while mood presents its factual status.

Some content nouns select other prepositions: confiança en, interès per/en, acord amb, respecte a, debat sobre. These phrases name the domain or target of the abstract relation.

La confiança en els serveis públics depèn també de la rapidesa de la resposta.

Confidence in public services also depends on the speed of the response.

L'interès per la memòria oral ha crescut entre els investigadors més joves.

Interest in oral history has grown among younger researchers.

(Formal/academic) pel que fa a, respecte a, quant a organize topics in expository prose. They are discourse locutions, not substitutes for every complement selected by a noun.

Definiteness and the meaning of de

Compare un augment de preus with l'augment dels preus. The first classifies the increase as one involving prices; the second refers to the increase of a contextually identifiable set of prices. Likewise, una professora de català classifies a professional role, while la professora del curs de català identifies a particular course relation.

L'informe preveu un augment de preus, però no concreta l'augment dels preus regulats.

The report forecasts a price increase, but it does not specify the increase in regulated prices.

This contrast is not about whether de is present—it appears in both—but about the determiner and the discourse status of the complement.

Word order, punctuation, and scope

Keep a short selected complement close to its head noun. A long adjunct placed between them can obscure the dependency. Compare the clear la resposta de l'empresa a les queixes rebudes ahir with the garden path la resposta a les queixes rebudes ahir de l'empresa.

Restrictive complements are not set off by commas: la resposta a la pregunta. A parenthetical explanatory phrase may be: La resposta, contrària a les previsions, va arribar tard. Commas signal information structure, not the preposition itself.

Negation may change the scope of the whole noun phrase. No hi ha resposta a totes les preguntes usually means that some questions lack answers; No hi ha cap resposta a les preguntes denies answers altogether.

A natural dialogue

—Ja tenim la resposta de l'ajuntament a la nostra sol·licitud?

—Do we have the town council's response to our application yet?

—Encara no. La persona responsable de l'expedient és fora.

—Not yet. The person in charge of the case file is away.

—I la possibilitat de començar les obres al juny?

—And what about the possibility of starting the work in June?

—Depèn de l'autorització d'accés al pati.

—It depends on authorization to access the courtyard.

Short correction task

Correct the relation expressed by the bold sequence.

  1. el dret d'un habitatge digne
  2. la visita de la dentista when the patient is visiting her
  3. la possibilitat de que tanquin abans
  4. la traducció a la novel·la de l'anglès when the novel is the translated text

Answers: el dret a un habitatge digne; la visita a la dentista; la possibilitat que tanquin abans; la traducció de la novel·la de l'anglès (or, if the target language matters, la traducció de la novel·la de l'anglès al català).

Key Takeaways

Relational nouns most often use de, but eventive nouns may require several complements with distinct roles: de for a theme or source, a for a target or recipient. Content nouns distinguish de + noun/infinitive from a finite que clause. Keep each complement near the noun it modifies, use determiners to signal whether a relation is classifying or specific, and rewrite genuinely ambiguous de phrases rather than expecting context to do all the work.
