Agreement with Mixed-Gender and Inclusive Groups

When a postposed Catalan adjective has scope over nouns of different grammatical genders, standard formal agreement uses masculine plural: una metgessa i un infermer experimentats. A predicate controlled by a mixed coordinated subject follows the same resolution: La metgessa i l'infermer estan preparats. Prenominal adjectives behave differently, as explained below. The masculine plural is also traditionally the unmarked form for a group presented as mixed or left unspecified: els candidats seleccionats can include women as well as men.

That grammatical rule does not settle every stylistic question. In institutional, professional, and public-facing writing, writers may need to prevent ambiguity, make women explicitly visible, or include people without repeatedly classifying them by gender. Contemporary standard Catalan provides several strategies: collective nouns, epicene phrases with persona, full double forms, repetition, and sentence recasting. Each strategy has its own agreement.

For nonhuman coordination and long noun phrases more generally, see complex noun-phrase agreement.

The core agreement calculation

A postposed adjective that modifies a coordinated set is plural. It is feminine plural only when all the coordinated heads are feminine; otherwise standard agreement is masculine plural.

Una arquitecta i un enginyer especialitzats en rehabilitació dirigiran les obres.

A female architect and a male engineer specializing in restoration will manage the work.

La presidenta i la secretària, totes dues satisfetes amb l'acord, compareixeran després de la reunió.

The president and the secretary, both women and both satisfied with the agreement, will speak after the meeting.

The masculine plural in the first sentence represents the combined grammatical set; it does not change the gender of arquitecta. In the second, every controller is feminine, so totes dues and satisfetes are feminine plural.

💡
For a shared postposed adjective, count all the heads in its scope. Use feminine plural only if every head is feminine; otherwise the normative unmarked form is masculine plural.

Position and limited nearest-noun agreement

The plural pattern above is the clearest formal choice for a shared postposed adjective. When coordinated singular nouns form a tight semantic unit, Catalan can instead let a following adjective agree only with the nearest noun: una prudència i un tacte exquisit. That singular form can be ambiguous, because readers may initially attach exquisit only to tacte. Formal prose normally makes shared scope explicit with plural exquisits.

Va negociar amb una prudència i un tacte exquisits.

She negotiated with exquisite prudence and tact. The plural adjective unambiguously has scope over both nouns.

A genuinely prenominal shared adjective normally agrees with the first coordinated noun, not with the mixed set as a plural. Thus la necessària coordinació i diàleg entre els equips has feminine singular necessària because the first head is feminine coordinació. Reversing the heads gives el necessari diàleg i coordinació. Repeating full noun phrases removes any possible scope ambiguity.

La necessària coordinació i diàleg entre els equips facilitaran l'acord.

The necessary coordination and dialogue between the teams will facilitate the agreement.

Avoiding an apparent nearest-noun mismatch

In un enginyer i una arquitecta especialitzats, the correct shared adjective is masculine plural even though the adjacent noun is feminine singular. The result is grammatical but may slow the reader. Three edits improve processing:

  1. place a masculine head next to the shared adjective;
  2. repeat the adjective with local agreement;
  3. replace the adjective with a relative clause.

Hi participaran una arquitecta i un enginyer especialitzats en habitatge social.

A female architect and a male engineer specializing in social housing will participate.

Hi participaran una arquitecta especialitzada en habitatge social i un enginyer també especialitzat en aquest àmbit.

A female architect specializing in social housing and a male engineer also specializing in this field will participate.

The second version is longer but gives each person local agreement. In (formal) prose, clarity can justify repetition; compactness is not an absolute virtue.

The masculine plural: generic or specifically male

Traditional masculine plural forms have two possible readings. Context can make them generic for a mixed or unspecified group, or contrast them with a feminine group and thereby restrict them to men.

Han arribat els tècnics: la Marta, en Pau i la Joana ja són a la sala.

The technicians have arrived: Marta, Pau, and Joana are already in the room. The masculine plural is generic.

Han arribat els tècnics; les tècniques encara són a l'altra seu.

The male technicians have arrived; the female technicians are still at the other location. Contrast makes the first masculine plural male-specific.

This context-sensitive minimal pair explains both the usefulness and the limitation of the unmarked masculine. It is fully grammatical, but it can be ambiguous before context resolves it. Current (formal) IEC and public-administration style criteria recognize generic masculine as part of Catalan grammar while also recommending inclusive alternatives when precision, visibility, or communicative context calls for them.

English often avoids this morphological choice because “the technicians are ready” shows no gender. Catalan requires an agreement form, but a writer can often choose a different head noun rather than force every person into a masculine/feminine doublet.

Collective and epicene alternatives

Collective nouns refer to a group without listing gendered member nouns: el personal, l'alumnat, el professorat, l'equip, la plantilla, la ciutadania. Agreement follows the collective noun's own grammatical gender and number—not the number or identities of its members.

Tot el personal contractat rebrà una acreditació nova.

All newly hired staff will receive a new badge.

La plantilla sencera està preparada per començar.

The entire staff is ready to begin.

English staff often takes a plural verb in British usage, whereas Catalan singular el personal and la plantilla take singular agreement: contractat, preparada. The Catalan noun personal is also a misleading English cognate here: as a noun, it means “staff,” not “personal matters.”

Epicene persona offers a highly productive alternative, especially for an individual of unspecified gender: la persona interessada, la persona candidata, les persones usuàries. All modifiers agree grammatically with feminine persona, regardless of whom the phrase denotes.

Totes aquestes persones candidates seleccionades seran informades del resultat abans de divendres.

All these selected candidates will be informed of the result before Friday.

The sentence displays feminine plural agreement across totes, aquestes, persones, candidates, seleccionades, and informades. This is grammatical agreement with persones, not a statement that every referent is a woman.

Other useful strategies include tothom with masculine singular agreement (Tothom hi serà benvingut) and a verbal recast such as Cal presentar la sol·licitud abans de divendres instead of naming “applicants” at all.

💡
Inclusive wording often works best by changing the head noun or the sentence structure. Once you choose persona, personal, plantilla, or tothom, follow that word's ordinary grammatical agreement consistently.

Full double forms and the scope of the adjective

Full forms can make women explicitly visible: els candidats i les candidates. If one adjective follows the entire coordination, ordinary mixed agreement makes it masculine plural: els candidats i les candidates seleccionats. That form is grammatical, but the adjacency of feminine candidates and masculine seleccionats may look jarring.

Els candidats seleccionats i les candidates seleccionades rebran un correu aquesta tarda.

The selected male and female candidates will receive an email this afternoon.

Repeating the adjective removes scope ambiguity. Another concise solution is les persones candidates seleccionades. Institutional style guides generally favor collective or epicene wording for sustained prose and reserve full doublets for contexts where visibility or contrast matters. This avoids turning every article, noun, adjective, and pronoun into an unwieldy chain.

Abbreviated double forms such as candidat/a are (formal; schematic) options in forms, tables, and short labels. They are hard to read aloud and are poor default prose. Forms such as @, x, or the innovative ending -i are (informal; activist/community) practices, not part of current standard Catalan morphology. In communication about a known individual, respectful wording and a person's stated form of address remain a separate interpersonal responsibility; grammatical status and social courtesy are not the same question.

Articles, order, and neighboring agreement

A generic plural normally has an article: Els estudiants matriculats rebran l'avís. English bare “enrolled students” does not license Catalan Estudiants matriculats... as an ordinary complete subject. A collective alternative also takes its determiner: L'alumnat matriculat.

Do not try to solve mixed reference by moving every adjective before the noun. Neutral Catalan still favors les persones candidates seleccionades, not an English-like string such as les seleccionades candidates persones. Position and agreement remain separate decisions.

Lexical gender must be learned in Catalan rather than guessed from Spanish. For example, Catalan senyal is masculine although Spanish señal is feminine: un senyal i una instrucció nous, not una senyal... noves. With a mixed coordination, the shared adjective is masculine plural.

The core mixed-agreement rule is shared by Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese standards. Regional determiners and possessives should nevertheless form a coherent model: Central aquestes candidates meves; (regional: Valencian) estes candidates meues. Inclusive intentions do not justify a hybrid such as estes candidates meves.

Common Mistakes

1. Agreeing only with the nearest feminine noun.

❌ Un metge i una infermera experimentades atendran les urgències.

Incorrect — the shared adjective has scope over a mixed-gender set and must be masculine plural.

✅ Un metge i una infermera experimentats atendran les urgències.

An experienced doctor and nurse will handle emergencies.

2. Leaving the adjective invariant like English.

❌ Les persones interessat poden inscriure-s'hi avui.

Incorrect — interessat must agree with feminine plural persones.

✅ Les persones interessades poden inscriure-s'hi avui.

Interested people can register today.

3. Using semantic plural agreement with a singular collective.

❌ El personal nou estan preparats.

Incorrect — singular masculine personal controls both the verb and adjective.

✅ El personal nou està preparat.

The new staff is ready.

4. Copying English bare-plural article distribution.

❌ Candidats seleccionats rebran un missatge.

Incorrect as an ordinary complete generic subject — Catalan normally requires a determiner.

✅ Les persones candidates seleccionades rebran un missatge.

Selected candidates will receive a message.

5. Mixing Central and Valencian paradigms.

❌ Estes dues candidates meves estan preparades.

Inconsistent as a single-variety model — estes is Valencian and meves is Central.

✅ Aquestes dues candidates meves estan preparades.

These two candidates of mine are ready. Central standard baseline.

Key Takeaways

Mixed coordinated heads take a shared masculine plural adjective in the standard language; an all-feminine set takes feminine plural. Generic masculine is grammatical but can be ambiguous or stylistically insufficient for a particular audience. Collective nouns, persona phrases, complete doublets, repetition, and sentence recasting are all standard resources. Choose the strategy that serves the text, then let the chosen grammatical head control every determiner, adjective, pronoun, and verb.
