Academic Catalan must let readers distinguish definitions, evidence, interpretation, limitation, and conclusion. Its formality comes from accountable reasoning and terminological control, not from replacing ordinary verbs with longer nouns. A seminar presentation and a research article may express the same argument, but the article must make every reference and inferential step recoverable without intonation or immediate questions.
Disciplinary and institutional conventions vary. Citation systems, permissible first-person forms, section structures, and capitalization are house-style decisions; they should not be presented as immutable Catalan grammar. The principles here apply broadly across contemporary standard Catalan.
Define a term before making it carry an argument
A definition should identify the category and the distinguishing feature relevant to the study. Avoid circular formulas and unexplained synonym chains.
In this study, the term vulnerability denotes a household's exposure to economic changes that may compromise its ability to meet basic needs. (operational academic definition)
The frame en aquest estudi limits the definition rather than claiming that every discipline uses the term identically. The weak pronoun -ne in comprometre'n la capacitat refers anaphorically to d'una llar: it is the household's capacity. If a specialized term has competing definitions, name the chosen tradition and explain why it fits the analysis.
By sustained participation we mean involvement maintained throughout all phases of the project, not a one-off consultation. (explicit contrastive definition)
First-person plural here does not pretend that all readers already agree; it establishes the authors' analytic usage.
Separate claim strength from stylistic confidence
Academic hedging calibrates a statement to the evidence. Demostra claims decisive support; indica or mostra presents a finding; suggereix marks a plausible interpretation; és compatible amb is weaker still. The strongest verb is not the most academic.
| Formulation | Evidential commitment | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| demostra que | very strong | proof or evidence that excludes relevant alternatives |
| mostra / indica que | strong descriptive support | reported pattern in the data |
| suggereix que | calibrated inference | interpretation with live alternatives |
| podria estar relacionat amb | tentative | possible relation not established causally |
The data indicate an association between journey length and dropout, but do not permit a causal relationship to be established. (claim plus evidential limit)
These results suggest that the effect may depend on the participants' age. (appropriately hedged interpretation)
English academic prose also hedges, but direct transfer can produce repetitive potser or sembla que. Catalan has lexical, modal, and scope resources: probablement, podria, és plausible que, en aquesta mostra, fins a cert punt. State exactly what is uncertain.
Choose an authorial voice deliberately
Academic Catalan uses several legitimate voices:
- First-person singular (analitzo, sostinc) can be appropriate in single-authored humanities or qualitative work.
- First-person plural (analitzem, proposem) is common for multiple authors and is also an institutional or rhetorical convention.
- Pronominal impersonal/passive constructions (s'analitzen les dades) background the researcher and foreground the procedure.
In the following section, we analyze the factors that condition access to housing. (academic first-person plural)
In the following section, the factors conditioning access to housing are analyzed. (academic pronominal construction)
Both are grammatical. The first names authorial action; the second organizes the text around its object. Do not alternate randomly. Nor should an impersonal construction hide a consequential choice: Vam excloure deu casos perquè no complien el criteri d'edat is more accountable than a vague Es van produir exclusions.
Connectors should expose real relations
Academic connectors map an argument: d'una banda… d'altra banda balances dimensions; tanmateix introduces a counterweight; per tant marks an inference; en aquest sentit develops a previously defined interpretation; pel que fa a delimits a topic. Their meanings are not interchangeable.
The intervention increased attendance. However, it did not reduce differences between neighborhoods. (concessive counterweight)
The sample does not include rural municipalities; therefore, the results cannot be generalized to the whole territory. (explicit inference)
Stacking així mateix, d'altra banda, no obstant això does not sound sophisticated; it gives the reader incompatible instructions. See academic connectors.
Integrate citations into your own syntax
A citation must make clear what belongs to the source and what belongs to the current author. Integrate the researcher as an agent when their act of proposing, observing, or arguing matters; use a parenthetical citation when the proposition matters more. Exact punctuation and bibliography format depend on the required citation system.
Ferrer (2022) distingeix entre confiança interpersonal i confiança institucional.
Ferrer (2022) distinguishes between interpersonal and institutional trust. (author-prominent citation model)
Institutional trust varies according to experience with public services (Ferrer, 2022). (information-prominent citation model)
These names and dates illustrate syntax, not a real bibliographic recommendation. In actual work, verify every reference and reproduce the selected style faithfully. A citation placed after a whole paragraph can leave its scope ambiguous; cite close to the supported claim.
Quotations require page or locator information when the chosen system demands it. More importantly, introduce and interpret them: a quotation cannot perform the author's analytic work by itself.
Build a paragraph as a reasoning unit
A useful academic paragraph often moves through four functions: a bounded claim, evidence, interpretation, and a consequence or transition. This is a rhetorical pattern, not a mandatory template.
Frequency of use does not by itself explain trust in the service. Interviews show that some regular users consider it unpredictable. This result points to a difference between familiarity and trust; for that reason, the following analysis examines perceived response quality. (cohesive academic paragraph)
Annotation: The first sentence bounds the claim with per si sola. The second gives evidence and has a visible source, les entrevistes. Aquest resultat resumes the finding rather than vaguely referring to “this.” The semicolon and per això connect interpretation to the next analytic step.
Terminology should remain stable within this chain. If usuaris, participants, and informants denote different groups, define each. If they denote one group, apparent synonym variety may manufacture distinctions that the study does not make.
Spoken explanation and written argument
Seminar discussion (planned speech):
Well, what we see here is that the small group improves, but we can't say it is only because of the program either, because there are other factors. (planned academic speech)
Written version:
The smaller group shows an improvement; however, the study design does not allow it to be attributed exclusively to the program, since it does not control for other relevant factors. (written academic argument)
The revision removes turn-management bé, identifies the evidential constraint as the design, and replaces general hi ha altres factors with the methodological problem. It does not become better merely because its words are longer.
Before and after: nominalization without logic
Before:
Carrying out the observation of the variation enables consideration to be carried out of the existence of a possible relationship. (opaque nominal chain)
After, plain academic style:
La variació observada suggereix que les dues variables podrien estar relacionades.
The observed variation suggests that the two variables may be related. (agentless but clear and calibrated)
The revision turns processes back into verbs and selects one degree of certainty. Nominalization remains useful when a process must become a stable concept—la urbanització del litoral—but not every verb needs to become a noun.
Formal and plain alternatives
Both communicate the same limitation. The first suits a specialist article; the second may suit a public research summary. Audience design changes terminology and syntax without changing the evidential claim.
Correction Practice
- Repair the connector in La mostra és petita.
The claim is absolute, evaluative, and stronger than ordinary empirical evidence warrants.
In this sample, the results indicate that the policy met more targets than the two alternatives analyzed.
Literal transfer of English on the one hand... on the other hand; Catalan uses banda in this discourse marker.
On the one hand, precision increases; on the other hand, cost rises.
Grammatical, but three connectors issue conflicting or redundant instructions.
✅ Tanmateix, les dades no confirmen la hipòtesi.
However, the data do not confirm the hypothesis.
⚠️ Smith diu que...
Too vague for this context: the reporting act and verifiable reference are missing.
✅ Smith (2020) proposa distingir dos mecanismes causals.
Smith (2020) proposes distinguishing two causal mechanisms. (specific reporting act; illustrative citation)
Grammatical administrative nominal style obscures a simple research action.
✅ Vam analitzar les dades.
We analyzed the data. (clear academic first person)
Key Takeaways
- Define terms for the scope of the study and keep terminology stable.
- Match claim strength to evidence; hedging should identify a real limit, not merely sound cautious.
- Choose first person or an impersonal construction for rhetorical purpose and disciplinary convention.
- Use connectors to name genuine logical relations and citations to delimit intellectual responsibility.
- Build paragraphs from claims, evidence, interpretation, and consequence while keeping references explicit.
