Editing for Cohesion and Rhythm

A cohesive text lets readers identify what each sentence is about, how it relates to the previous one, and where the paragraph is going. Rhythm is the audible shape of that guidance: the balance of short and long units, the position of stress, and the pauses created by punctuation. Neither quality comes from inserting more connectors. They come from managing reference, information order, and sentence architecture.

This page focuses on revision. The first draft may be grammatical yet still force the reader to reconstruct unclear pronouns, overloaded clitics, or a chain of equally weighted sentences. Editing makes those relations visible while preserving useful repetition, regional voice, and genre.

For the inventory of linking devices, see reference chains; this page concentrates on choosing among them during revision.

Build an unbroken reference chain

A new paragraph usually introduces a full noun phrase and then tracks it with omitted subjects, pronouns, clitics, demonstratives, or a controlled repetition. Catalan can omit subject pronouns, so verb agreement and lexical continuity often do most of the work.

La cooperativa va presentar el projecte dimarts. L'endemà en va publicar el pressupost i el va enviar a les entitats sòcies.

The cooperative presented the project on Tuesday. The next day it published its budget and sent it to the member organizations.

Here en retrieves “of the project,” while el retrieves el pressupost. The omitted subject remains la cooperativa. Repeating the full subject twice would be possible but heavier; omitting the object clitics would break the chain.

Not every repetition is bad. A strategic full noun resets a chain after an intervening topic or prevents a pronoun from acquiring two plausible antecedents.

La comissió va escoltar les famílies i l'equip directiu. Després de dues hores de debat, la comissió va ajornar la decisió.

The committee listened to the families and the management team. After two hours of debate, the committee postponed the decision.

Replacing the second la comissió with aquesta is not automatically more elegant. The repeated noun restores the decision-maker after two other plural groups have entered the paragraph.

💡
Repeat a noun when it prevents a wrong reading; use a clitic or omission when the reference is effortless. Cohesion is controlled redundancy, not the elimination of every repeated word.

Repair ambiguous pronouns and clitics

Third-person clitics often encode grammatical role and number but not enough lexical identity. Li can refer to a man, a woman, or an institution. Two same-gender noun phrases can make an overt pronoun equally ambiguous.

Quan la directora va parlar amb la tècnica, li va dir que calia repetir la prova.

When the director spoke with the technician, she told her that the test had to be repeated. (Ambiguous: who spoke?)

Quan la directora va parlar amb la tècnica, la directora li va demanar que repetís la prova.

When the director spoke with the technician, the director asked her to repeat the test. (The agent, recipient, and requested action are explicit.)

The repeated la directora is justified. If context makes the roles obvious, a lighter version is possible: La directora va demanar a la tècnica que repetís la prova. Editing should remove ambiguity at the smallest cost.

Long clitic sequences can be grammatical yet hard to process. Break the sentence or restore a noun if the reader must decode several antecedents.

Els documents que faltaven, demà els hi portarem.

We'll take the missing documents there tomorrow. (Here els resumes the documents and hi is a genuine locative, so the combination is standard.)

In edited formal Catalan, els hi portarem is correct here because hi is truly locative. Colloquial els hi can also replace other combinations or a plural indirect-object clitic in Central speech. Do not transplant those spoken uses into formal prose without checking their functions. Conversely, a dialogue may need precisely that spoken form. Regional clitic systems—including Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese patterns—must be edited within their own coherent norm, not mechanically recast as Central Catalan.

Sentence length: vary the cognitive load

Long sentences are not formal by definition, and short sentences are not childish. A sentence should carry one manageable configuration of relations. Subordination works when the hierarchy is meaningful; coordination works when events have equal weight.

Com que l'aigua havia entrat pel pati durant tota la nit, els tècnics van ajornar l'obertura del centre fins que haguessin comprovat la instal·lació elèctrica.

Because water had been coming in through the courtyard all night, the technicians postponed opening the centre until they had checked the electrical system.

This long sentence has a clear spine: cause → decision → safety condition. Splitting it after centre might be useful in an emergency notice, but not because the original is ungrammatical.

L'aigua havia entrat al centre. No obriu encara. Els tècnics comprovaran la instal·lació elèctrica.

Water had entered the centre. Do not open yet. The technicians will check the electrical system. (urgent spoken or posted instructions)

Genre changes rhythm. An emergency message foregrounds the action in short units; an incident report preserves causal hierarchy.

💡
Read each paragraph aloud. If every sentence uses the same length and terminal cadence, combine or divide selectively. Rhythm depends on contrast.

Connectors: fewer, more exact

A connector should express a relation the reader might not otherwise recover. Adding one to every sentence produces a list of labels instead of an argument.

La primera prova va fallar. Tanmateix, l'equip no va abandonar el projecte: va canviar el material i ho va tornar a intentar.

The first test failed. Nevertheless, the team did not abandon the project: it changed the material and tried again.

Tanmateix marks a real counterexpectation. The colon then explains how the team continued; adding a més before va canviar would be redundant.

The appropriate connector also depends on register. Però is neutral across speech and writing; tanmateix is more characteristic of formal prose; ara bé introduces a qualification or reset. Doncs is not a universal translation of Spanish pues: it can mark a conclusion or manage a turn, but standard causal clauses use perquè.

Punctuation makes hierarchy visible

Punctuation is not decoration added after syntax. It tells the reader whether the next unit explains, contrasts, interrupts, or concludes.

  • A colon announces an explanation, consequence, list, or formulation already licensed by the preceding unit.
  • A semicolon joins independent clauses whose relation is closer than a full stop would suggest.
  • Dashes isolate an interruption or parenthetical with more force than commas.
  • Parentheses background material; too many can make the main claim disappear.

Només faltava una dada: el nombre de places disponibles.

Only one figure was missing: the number of places available.

La proposta resol el problema immediat; no garanteix, però, una solució duradora.

The proposal solves the immediate problem; it does not, however, guarantee a lasting solution.

The colon completes a promise. The semicolon balances two claims, while medial però marks the correction without making it a separate sentence. A comma alone between two independent Catalan clauses can create an unhelpful run-on.

Cadence and the final position

Catalan prose often benefits from moving long or new material toward the end of the sentence. Clitics and omitted subjects keep lighter, known material earlier. The final position receives natural interpretive weight.

Al final de la reunió, la portaveu va anunciar una mesura que ningú no havia previst: el tancament temporal del servei.

At the end of the meeting, the spokesperson announced a measure nobody had foreseen: the temporary closure of the service.

The sentence moves from setting to speaker to new measure, then reveals the content after a colon. Reversing everything—El tancament temporal del servei va ser la mesura que...—would make the closure the starting topic, which may be right in the next paragraph but not in the moment of revelation.

Sound matters too. Three heavy nominal groups in succession can stall a sentence. Turning one into a verb often restores cadence: la implementació de la reorganització del servei becomes reorganitzar el servei.

Spoken, written, formal, and plain alternatives

The same delay can be framed differently:

Mira, avui no hi arribarem. Ens han fallat dues peces.

Look, we won't get it done today. Two parts have failed on us. (informal spoken; discourse marker and two short units)

Atès que no s'han rebut dues de les peces necessàries, es posposa el lliurament fins dilluns.

Since two required parts have not been received, delivery is postponed until Monday. (formal written; event-focused)

Lliurarem la comanda dilluns perquè encara no hem rebut dues peces.

We will deliver the order on Monday because we have not yet received two parts. (plain-language alternative; commitment first)

The formal version is appropriate in a record that foregrounds the circumstance. The plain version serves a customer by stating the revised commitment immediately. Neither needs a longer synonym to prove seriousness.

Before and after: edit a paragraph, not isolated sentences

Before:

La direcció va presentar el pla. Aquest va ser valorat per la comissió. Així mateix, aquesta va formular observacions. No obstant això, les observacions van ser rebudes per la direcció i, consegüentment, es va procedir a la modificació del pla.

Management presented the plan. This was assessed by the committee. Likewise, the latter made comments. However, the comments were received by management and, consequently, modification of the plan was undertaken.

After:

La direcció va presentar el pla a la comissió, que hi va formular diverses observacions. Després de rebre-les, la direcció va modificar el text.

Management presented the plan to the committee, which made several comments on it. After receiving them, management revised the text.

The revision joins actions that share a frame, gives que one clear antecedent, uses hi and les to maintain reference, and retains only the temporal connector needed. It also replaces passives and procedir a la modificació with responsible agents and verbs.

An annotated paragraph

La primera reunió va acabar sense acord. L'equip tècnic volia ampliar el calendari; les entitats, en canvi, reclamaven una decisió immediata. Dos dies després, la coordinadora els va enviar una proposta nova. Aquesta vegada, tothom la va acceptar.

The first meeting ended without agreement. The technical team wanted to extend the schedule; the organizations, by contrast, demanded an immediate decision. Two days later, the coordinator sent them a new proposal. This time, everyone accepted it.

  • The first short sentence establishes the problem.
  • The semicolon balances opposed positions; omission after les entitats avoids repeating volien while en canvi marks contrast.
  • els retrieves the organizations as recipients, and una proposta nova introduces the new object at the end.
  • Aquesta vegada contrasts the outcome with the first meeting; la then retrieves the proposal.
  • Sentence lengths move from short frame, to balanced contrast, to action, to concise resolution.

Common Mistakes

⚠️ La gerent va parlar amb la presidenta quan estava enfadada.

Grammatical but ambiguous: either woman may have been angry.

✅ Enfadada, la gerent va demanar una reunió a la presidenta.

Angry, the manager requested a meeting with the chair. (The controller of enfadada is explicit.)

⚠️ En primer lloc vam arribar tard. A més, el tren ja havia sortit. Per tant, doncs, vam esperar.

Grammatical but poorly organized: connector density labels obvious chronology and even stacks two conclusions.

✅ Vam arribar tard i el tren ja havia sortit; per tant, vam esperar el següent.

We arrived late and the train had already left, so we waited for the next one.

⚠️ Evitar repetir sempre el nom i substituir-lo sistemàticament per aquest, aquesta o el mateix.

Misguided editing: mechanical substitution can create stiff prose and unclear antecedents.

✅ Repetir el nom quan calgui restablir el referent.

Repeat the noun when the referent needs to be reset.

⚠️ L'informe és llarg, conté moltes dades, caldria resumir-lo.

The juxtaposed clauses are understandable, but commas alone blur the hierarchy between evidence and recommendation.

✅ L'informe és llarg i conté moltes dades; caldria resumir-lo.

The report is long and contains a great deal of data; it should be summarized.

Practice

Choose a paragraph of six sentences. Circle every referring expression and draw an arrow to its antecedent. Replace only the expressions with two plausible antecedents. Then mark each connector's relation and delete any whose work is already done by syntax. Finally, read the paragraph aloud and alter one sentence boundary so that the most important statement receives a distinct rhythm.

Key Takeaways

  • Cohesion is a recoverable chain of people, things, events, and logical relations.
  • Omitted subjects and clitics create light continuity; strategic noun repetition prevents ambiguity.
  • Sentence length should follow cognitive load and genre, not a false equation between length and formality.
  • Punctuation exposes hierarchy, while connectors name only relations that need naming.
  • Edit regional and spoken clitic patterns according to the intended voice; do not flatten natural variation in the name of smoothness.
