Journalistic Catalan is designed for rapid, verifiable understanding. A headline selects the news; the lead identifies the event and its relevance; later sentences supply sources, context, and limits. The register is usually neutral-formal, but a news report, live blog, interview, analysis, and opinion column do not make the same grammatical promises.
Good news style is not bureaucratic style. It favors visible agency, economical sentences, and explicit attribution. Institutional conventions—capitalization, quotation marks, date format, or preferred labels—belong to a publication's style guide; they are not universal facts of Catalan grammar.
Headlines compress, but must not distort
Headlines frequently use the present for a recent event because they present it as current news. Articles and copulas may be omitted when the meaning stays clear, especially in nominal headlines. This compression is a genre convention, not a model for ordinary prose.
El Parlament aprova la nova llei d'habitatge
Parliament passes the new housing law. (headline present for a completed, newsworthy event)
Tres municipis, sense tren per una avaria a la catenària
Three municipalities without train service because of an overhead-line fault. (compressed nominal headline)
A headline should identify the decisive agent when that agency matters. S'aprova una nova taxa hides who approved it; El ple aprova una nova taxa gives the reader information. A passive or impersonal form may be justified when the agent is unknown or irrelevant, not merely because English used one.
Headlines normally avoid end punctuation, but a question mark is meaningful in a genuine question headline. Publication-specific capitalization varies; Catalan does not require English-style title case.
The lead: event first, context in proportion
A straightforward news lead normally answers the most important of qui, què, on, quan, com, and per què. It need not force all six into one sentence. Put the changed state or action before procedural detail.
L'Ajuntament de Manresa va obrir ahir un nou refugi climàtic a la biblioteca del Casino, amb capacitat per a cent persones.
Manresa City Council opened a new climate shelter yesterday at the Casino library, with capacity for one hundred people. (concise event lead)
The periphrastic past (va obrir) is normal in contemporary news narration. The simple past may appear in formal writing and is especially alive in some Valencian usage, but an outlet should apply its chosen model consistently. Neither tense is inherently more objective.
For the broader time contrast, see the guide to the uses of the periphrastic past.
Do not begin with a chain of scene-setting nominalizations: Amb motiu de la procedència de la realització de… Readers need the event. Background can follow.
Attribution: who knows and who claims
Journalism must distinguish observation, official information, allegation, interpretation, and verified fact. Attribution can be initial, medial, or final, but it must attach unambiguously to the claim.
Segons el Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya, l'episodi de pluja s'allargarà fins dissabte.
According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, the spell of rain will last until Saturday. (forecast explicitly sourced)
La portaveu va afirmar que l'empresa havia complert tots els controls, una versió que el comitè encara no ha confirmat.
The spokesperson stated that the company had passed all the checks, a version the committee has not yet confirmed. (claim and verification status separated)
Verbs of saying carry stance. Dir and explicar are broad; afirmar marks an assertion; admetre presupposes reluctance or an unfavorable fact; denunciar presents a public accusation; demostrar claims conclusive evidence. Do not vary them merely to avoid repetition.
«No tancarem cap aula», va dir la consellera durant la compareixença.
‘We will not close any classrooms,’ the minister said during the press conference. (direct quotation with source and setting)
Quotation punctuation is governed partly by house style. Catalan publishing often prefers angled quotation marks (cometes baixes: « »), but curly quotation marks also occur. The grammatical obligation is fidelity: ellipses or edits must not change the speaker's meaning.
Reported speech and tense
Indirect speech integrates a source's words into the reporter's syntax. After a past reporting verb, past or conditional forms often locate the reported event relative to that past viewpoint.
La directora va anunciar que les obres començarien al setembre i que durarien quatre mesos.
The director announced that the work would begin in September and would last four months. (future viewed from a past announcement)
Present tense can remain when the proposition is still presented as current: La directora va recordar que l'edifici és de titularitat municipal. The choice is semantic, not an automatic backshift imported from English.
The so-called journalistic conditional can mark unconfirmed information—El sospitós hauria sortit del país—but it does not replace a source. Use it only under a clear editorial convention and preferably attribute the report.
Segons fonts de la investigació, el sospitós hauria sortit del país dimarts.
According to sources close to the investigation, the suspect is reported to have left the country on Tuesday. (conditional of unconfirmed report plus attribution)
Concise syntax and visible agency
Catalan news prose often prefers active clauses and pronominal constructions to repeated ser + participle passives. Compare an English-shaped sentence with a natural alternative:
Els bombers van rescatar dues excursionistes i les van traslladar a l'hospital d'Olot.
Firefighters rescued two hikers and took them to Olot hospital. (clear active sequence)
The passive Dues excursionistes van ser rescatades pels bombers i van ser traslladades… is grammatical, but it unnecessarily repeats the auxiliary and foregrounds the patients. Use that order only if the hikers, rather than the rescuers, are the established topic.
Conciseness also depends on reference. Repeating an institution's full name in every sentence is heavy, but replacing it with el mateix is often worse. Use an unambiguous short name, a pronoun, or natural lexical repetition.
L'Agència Catalana de l'Aigua ha activat l'alerta. L'organisme preveu revisar-la divendres.
The Catalan Water Agency has activated the alert. The agency plans to review it on Friday. (controlled reference chain)
Neutral terminology is accurate terminology
Neutral wording does not mean erasing social facts. It means choosing labels relevant to the story, avoiding dehumanizing shorthand, and not presenting one party's framing as the reporter's own. Age, origin, disability, gender, or legal status belongs in the story only when editorially relevant.
Vint persones van haver d'abandonar l'edifici; ningú no va resultar ferit.
Twenty people had to leave the building; no one was injured. (people-first, factual incident wording)
Terms change and institutions publish recommendations. A newsroom should verify current terminology with affected communities and relevant professional guides. That is an editorial research task, not a license to improvise euphemisms.
Spoken account versus written report
Witness's spoken account:
Jo era al balcó i, de cop, sento un soroll fortíssim; miro avall i veig tot de fum, i llavors truco al 112.
I was on the balcony and suddenly I hear an enormous noise; I look down and see lots of smoke, and then I call 112. (vivid conversational historical present)
News version:
Una veïna va explicar que, des del balcó, havia sentit una explosió i que, en veure fum al carrer, havia trucat al 112.
A resident explained that, from her balcony, she had heard an explosion and, on seeing smoke in the street, had called 112. (attributed written report)
The report does not merely remove fillers. It identifies the source, marks the words as testimony, establishes temporal order, and avoids adopting the witness's vivid present as the newsroom's direct observation.
Before and after: from press-release prose to news
Before:
Per part del consistori ha estat duta a terme la inauguració d'un equipament que suposa la materialització d'una aposta inequívoca per la cultura.
The opening of a facility has been carried out by the council, representing the materialization of an unequivocal commitment to culture. (promotional nominal and passive style)
After:
L'Ajuntament va inaugurar ahir el centre cultural. L'edifici, que ha costat 2,1 milions d'euros, obrirà al públic dilluns.
The City Council opened the cultural center yesterday. The building, which cost 2.1 million euros, will open to the public on Monday. (news style with event and checkable details)
The revision names the agent, replaces a promotional evaluation with facts, and divides the material into two time frames. If the phrase aposta inequívoca matters, attribute it: L'alcaldessa va definir el centre com «una aposta inequívoca per la cultura».
Formal and plain-language alternatives
An analysis may write (formal) La mesura no ha assolit els objectius previstos, malgrat l'increment pressupostari. A public-service news brief can say more plainly: El pressupost ha augmentat, però la mesura no ha complert els objectius. Both are grammatical; the second reduces processing load. Choose according to audience, not prestige.
An annotated paragraph

The president opened the new hospital yesterday.
⚠️ Hi hauria una dimissió imminent.

Key Takeaways
- Headline compression may alter tense and omit function words, but it must preserve agency and evidential status.
- Attribute claims precisely and choose reporting verbs for meaning, not synonym variety.
- Use tense to organize event time, reported time, and continuing validity; backshift is not purely mechanical.
- Prefer active, concise Catalan when the agent is known and relevant.
- Separate factual reporting from promotional, institutional, or partisan language by quoting and attributing it.
