Questions & Answers about Yoksa o muzip çocuk bir oyunbozan mı? Her şey göstermelik mi?
I learned that yoksa means 'or' or 'otherwise'. Why is it translated as 'Could it be that' here?
In earlier levels, you likely learned yoksa as a conjunction used between two choices (e.g., 'Do this, or else...'). However, when placed at the start of a yes/no question, it introduces pragmatic suspicion. It signals that the speaker is suddenly realizing a possibility—often a negative or surprising one—giving it the meaning of 'Could it be that...?' or 'Don't tell me that...?'
How does the word oyunbozan break down to mean 'spoilsport'?
It is a compound noun made of two parts: oyun (game) and bozan (the one who breaks/ruins). The -an suffix turns the verb bozmak (to break/spoil) into a subject participle. Literally, an oyunbozan is a 'game-breaker', which perfectly translates to 'spoilsport'.
What is the root and suffix structure of göstermelik?
The root is the verb göstermek (to show), which is formed into the verbal noun gösterme (the act of showing). Adding the versatile -lik suffix creates an adjective denoting purpose or suitability. Thus, göstermelik describes something that exists purely for the purpose of being seen, hence 'for show' or 'superficial'.
Could we use yoksa in the second sentence too, like 'Yoksa her şey göstermelik mi?'
