Questions & Answers about O kadar tuhaf bir terslik var ki içimde büyük bir kuşku büyüyor.

How does the o kadar ... ki pattern work in this sentence?

This is the Turkish equivalent of the English 'so/such ... that' structure. O kadar tuhaf bir terslik var means 'There is such a strange problem', and the Persian conjunction ki connects it to the result: 'that a big suspicion is growing'. It heavily emphasizes the intensity of the problem causing the suspicion.

What is the root of the word terslik?

It comes from the adjective ters, which means 'reverse', 'opposite', or 'wrong'. By adding the noun-forming suffix -lik, it becomes terslik, which translates to a 'mishap', 'setback', or 'something going wrong'.

This lesson is about suspicion. Could I use şüphe instead of kuşku here?

Yes, you can. Both words mean 'suspicion' or 'doubt' and are used interchangeably in many contexts. Şüphe is an Arabic loanword that is slightly more common in daily speech, while kuşku is a native Turkish word. Both fit perfectly here to describe a growing feeling that something is wrong.

Is it a coincidence that büyük (big) and büyüyor (is growing) sound so similar?

Not at all, they share the same root! The verb is büyümek (to grow), which we see here in the present continuous form büyüyor. The adjective büyük (big) is derived directly from this verb, literally referring to something that has grown.
