Questions & Answers about Bu gezegenin havası solunabilir değil, ne var ki birtakım bitkiler yetişiyor.
How does ne var ki function in this sentence, and is it different from ama?
Ne var ki is a conjunction meaning "however," "nevertheless," or "yet." It introduces a contrast or a surprising reservation to the first clause. While it serves the same basic purpose as ama or fakat (but), ne var ki carries a slightly more formal, literary, or dramatic tone.
Can you break down the suffixes in the word solunabilir?
The root is the verb solumak (to breathe). We add the passive suffix -n to get solunmak (to be breathed). Next is the potential suffix -abil (to be able to be breathed). Finally, the aorist (broad time) suffix -ir acts as a participle here, turning the whole verbal structure into an adjective meaning "breathable".
Why use değil here instead of just using the negative potential form solunamaz?
Both are entirely correct and have similar meanings. However, by using solunabilir değil, the speaker is treating solunabilir as an established, standalone adjective describing a fixed property of the planet's air ("is not a breathable thing"). If they used solunamaz ("cannot be breathed"), it would sound slightly more like an active verbal statement.
Why is birtakım written as one word, and why does it take the plural noun bitkiler?
