Questions & Answers about Tutanak yanlış yazılmış olsa gerek.
How does the grammar in yazılmış olsa gerek create the meaning 'must have been written'?
The phrase olsa gerek (the conditional of olmak plus gerek) expresses a strong logical deduction, meaning 'it must be'. To make a deduction about a past event, we use the -mış suffix on the main verb before it. Together, yazılmış olsa gerek translates to 'it must have been written' based on the evidence we are seeing now.
Could I say yazıldı olsa gerek instead, since the writing happened in the past?
No, you cannot use the definite past tense (-dı) with this structure. Because logical deductions are assumptions based on clues rather than direct, witnessed facts, Turkish requires the evidential past suffix -mış when guessing what must have happened.
Does the word tutanak only refer to the 'minutes' of a meeting?
It is slightly broader than that. A tutanak is any official written record, protocol, or report taken down on the spot. While it translates to 'minutes' for a formal meeting, it is also the standard word used for official police reports or traffic accident records.
Why isn't there an adverb suffix on yanlış, since it modifies the verb to mean 'incorrectly'?
In Turkish, most adjectives can function directly as adverbs without needing a special suffix like '-ly' in English. You can simply place yanlış straight before the verb to mean 'incorrectly', as seen in yanlış yazılmış (written incorrectly).
