Must be / Probably (-sa gerek)

Making Assumptions with "olsa gerek"

To express that something "must be" or "is probably" true based on logical deduction, you can use the structure -(y)sa gerek. In everyday situations, this is most commonly formed using the verb olmak (to be).

By adding the conditional suffix -sa / -se to ol and following it with gerek (necessary), you create the phrase olsa gerek (it must be). You can place this right after an adjective or a location to state your assumption.

The new files must be in this folder.
Yeni dosyalar bu klasörde olsa gerek.
The auditor must be in the accounting department today.
Denetmen bugün muhasebe bölümünde olsa gerek.
The schedule that the team examined must be very old.
Ekibin incelediği çizelge çok eski olsa gerek.

Past Deductions with "-mış olsa gerek"

To guess that an action "must have" happened in the past, you combine the main verb with the reported past tense suffix (-mış / -miş / -muş / -müş), and then follow it with olsa gerek.

The employer must have checked the budget in order to give an advance.
İşveren avans vermek için bütçeyi kontrol etmiş olsa gerek.
The accounting manager must have gotten very angry because the worker asked for an advance.
İşçi avans istedi diye muhasebe müdürü çok kızmış olsa gerek.
The minutes must have been written wrong.
Tutanak yanlış yazılmış olsa gerek.

Adding Personal Markers

When the subject of your assumption is a person (like "we" or "I"), you can attach the appropriate personal marker directly to the conditional suffix on olmak. For example, to say "we must have," olsa becomes olsak before adding gerek.

We must have won the tender, everyone is smiling.
İhaleyi biz kazanmış olsak gerek, herkes gülümsüyor.
